How adorable is this crochet Santa beard and beanie? I mean seriously one of the most fun patterns – perfect for the Holidays AND keeping warm!

free pattern for this crochet double loop bearded santa beanie

When I wrote this patterm two years ago I only wrote two child sizes – and since then I’ve gotten a ton of requests for larger patterns. SO I made some…

All the Beanie patterns AND Beard patterns made this post too long, so I separated it – the FIVE sizes of Santa Hats are moved to a new post.

So last year I did the reindeer beanie for Baby Boy, THIS year I was having so much fun with my bearded beanies that I decided he needed a bearded Santa’s hat!

My sweet niece is rocking the reindeer, making them the perfect pair this holiday season!

I don't think it gets much more adorable than beards on kids, come get this free crochet pattern

I went through a few designs when I was first starting this bearded hat. I tried using Fun Fur with my basic beard pattern thinking it would make a fun beard.  I think think looks great, BUT annoyed Baby Boy to no end, all that fur in his mouth and tickling his nose, I hadn’t even though of that!

I still wanted that furry look than my bobble beards so I decided to try a different stitch – the double loop. It’s perfect, I switched the beanie over to a double loop as well and voila – perfection!

I originally tried fuzzy yarn, then the bobble, but the double loop just works best for these bearded santa hats

How to get Double Loops every row

Working in a round it’s easy to get the loops on the front of your piece – by working from the back. But when working in rows it’s harder.

You could simply do a sc row between every loop row, but with this thick yarn there are only a few rows, if every other one was an SC there would be WAY less loops.

SO I decided to create a loop row every row, meaning I did a right handed loop row, then a left handed loop row. Just go slow and you’ll get it.

IF you have a hard time with the left handed loop rows you can stick with an SC row between OR you cut the yarn and restart it and go in the same direction every row.

left handed double loop stitch (if you have a hard time with a left handed double loop substitute with a sc row instead)

I’m trying to make the beard for my 16 year old son and I can’t wrap my mind around the loops. I’ve you tubed how to do them, but I don’t see where there is a mouth spot and don’t I need to do some kind of a row first to attach the loops? I’ve been struggling and don’t normally reply, but he really would like a beard and I’d love to be able to make him one. You do awesome things!!!

there is a first row, in fact there are 2 rows of regular stitches before you start the double loops. as for the mouth hole in row 9 of the medium beard it says “ch 8, skip 9 stitches” this is where the hole comes in, in the next row you create the mustache working in that chain.

    Thank You

the white yarn is so much thicker than the read that you can’t just switch from one to the other. So in row 23 your creating larger spaces so that in row 24 you can attach the larger yarn using the larger hook.

I love this pattern and this stitch, my problem/question is: I used the extra small loop beard figuring that must be the one to use for a baby of 6 months, but now thinking i might should have used the other one. When I tried it on my granddaughter to model it, I noticed she did not like the beard. SO I am not one that usually makes up patterns but was thinking about putting to 1 inch white buttons in the white furry part of the hat and then chaining a couple of loops on each side of the beard so the beard could be attached for photos but then unattached and worn as a hat. Any suggestions? What do you think?
BTW, based on letting the beard hang a little further down by attaching it by a chain and by buttons, I sewed up the mouth hole to let this come to the baby’s chin instead. Again, any comments, ideas you have would be appreciated.

I would like to send you a picture of how I took your pattern and put buttons on it so the beard can be removed. How can I do that?

I’ve used that technique before my self so I know how it’s done, but thank you. I just choose not to use it cause I don’t WANT my kids taking it off, and with the aspergers they are sensitive to irritation like buttons

I couldn’t do it either, so I just done that row with sc’s…and then on the next row, just made the loops a little longer…worked for me.

      February 1, 2015 at 1:18 am

I’m glad it worked for you. I will say the left handed does take me about twice as long as the righthanded, but I LOVE the end result!

      February 1, 2015 at 12:11 am

like I say in the pattern “IF you have a hard time with the left handed loop rows simply do an SC row instead”. Personally I like doing every row of loops so that the beard is nice and full. I am working on a video to help.

I think there is a mistake on medium size beard on the row where you chain. I did loop stitch 8 times chained 8 skipped 9 and loop stitch 8 times. Maybe I read it wrong.

why do you think it’s wrong? didn’t it end up correctly? You want to skip more than your creating because that is what creates the mouth shape, larger, rounded bottom, tighter straight across the lip.

LOVE LOVE THIS HAT… I can’t wait for my kiddo to wear it! Thank you for the pattern … But I’m confused about the beard part …. What do you mean by left and right hand? Does it just mean to turn your work at the end of each row?

    Reply
    • Ashlee

      February 1, 2015 at 1:47 am

No – ideally you change hands every row to keep the loops all on one side. If you can’t do the left handed version then you can turn your work, but don’t do a loop just do a row of sc. I explain in the “stitch abbreviation section” before the patterns each start

Oh my goodness! Made the toddler size for my 15 month old son. The absolute cutest! I opted to use the regular bobble beard instead of the loop, and crocheted a white bobble-ball for the top of the hat.

I can’t do the left handed for anything but doing a sc row looked funny so I finally decided to just finish off at the end of every row and start over. There’s more loose ends to hide but it was the best compromise I could find for my lack of left handed skills.
