A double loop crochet beanie pattern. Perfect for a Santa or elf hat and a great base for my double loop crochet beard pattern!

a free crochet pattern for this double loop edged santa beanie

Two years ago I made a child sized crochet bearded Santa hat. It was adorable AND it’s been a HUGE hit!

Anyway I’ve been getting a lot of requests for larger sizes, SO this year I sat down and wrote a bunch more sizes, BUT because it would have made the original post GINORMOUS I separated the hats to this new posts and left all the double loop beard patterns in the old post.

I hope you all love this pattern as much as my family has loved them! Seriously Princess hasn’t taken her’s off in days!

And even Baby Boy (who didn’t really love it the first time around) had enjoyed it this year and requested to wear his! Who will you be making this one for in your life?

Double Loop Crochet Santa Bearded hat pattern
Materials:
red weight yarn (I used cotton ease in cherry)
White bulky yarn (I used Baby’s first in “cotton ball”)
Hook I- 5.50mm
Hook N- 9.00mm
double loop BEARD if your making the bearded santa hat

Stitch abbreviation:
slip stitch (sl st)
single crochet (sc)
half double crochet (hdc)
double loop stitch  (insert your hook into the stitch. take yarn and wrap it clockwise around your left index finger twice (opposite of the way you’d normally hold it over your finger.). stick the hook under the loops on your finger catching all three strands with the hook.  pull all three strands through the stitch, YO and pull through all 4 loops on hook.)

The loops shows up on the opposite side of what your working on, so working in the round you need to make sure your working from the INSIDE of the hat so that the loops show up on the OUTSIDE.

How do you make the poof ball on the tip of the hat?

I wrapped the white yarn around my hand 20-25 times, then tied it tight in the center (so like a pom pom but without cutting the loops).

I got frustrated with the way the pom poms looked when I just wrapped the yarn around my hand. I have a lot of knitting looms and found this video for making pom poms with the small orange flower loom. They turned out perfect!

I made the beanie hats with beards for 3 of my great grandsons. I used the child pattern. I truly appreciated having patterns for the different sizes. I wish i could include a photo so others can enjoy them as well.

Do you have a pattern for 12 months? I’ve might have over looked it.

I don’t size that way, since 12 month old’s head sizes vary so much, just baby unless they are large for their age.

Hi, great pattern! When you say ‘magic ring’ do I make it with sc or hdc and how many stiches in the magic ring?

the “magic ring” is just the loops around, row one is what you work in those loops. row 1 are the first magic ring stitches

Your pattern is adorable!! I have almost completed one for my 2 year old brother. Thank you for the free pattern.

I am having a bit of a problem though, if anyone can give me a hand; I have a large gap in every row from the ‘chain 2’s. Am I supposed to be crocheting the last 2 dc into this gap, or do I skip them completely and sl st into the beginning dc? I’m not a beginner but I just cannot figure out what I am doing wrong.

Thank you, again, for the cute pattern!

try crocheting the chains tighter (that’s what I do) . But since you’ll be sewing the beard into the hat it doesn’t really matter.

Absolutely love this pattern. I just started one for my 15 MO old and I was curious as to which stitch the hdc goes into at the beginning of every round. First or second from the chain? I don’t want to get all the way to the end to find out if I made the right choice. Thank you for the free pattern!!

I don’t count chains as stitches – just do it in the actual stitch

    Hi Ashlee,

Thanks for this bootie pattern, I’m looking forward to trying it out! A question for you: do you allow the selling of items made from your patterns? I’ve looked for a written policy on your site here but can’t find one.

Hi Ashlee, thank you so much for the free patterns. I love the beard pattern and have just made it for my grandson and am attaching it to a beanie that I made. (I’ll make him a Santa one closer to Christmas) I am having a hard time deciding where to attach the beard to the beanie. Do you have a failproof method for attaching it? Thank you so much!

nope, I attach one side, then put the hat on my kids and mark where I want the other side to attach
