So last year I did the reindeer beanie for Baby Boy, THIS year I was having so much fun with my bearded beanies that I decided he needed a bearded Santa’s hat!
My sweet niece is rocking the reindeer, making them the perfect pair this holiday season!
I went through a few designs when I was first starting this bearded hat. I tried using Fun Fur with my basic beard pattern thinking it would make a fun beard. I think think looks great, BUT annoyed Baby Boy to no end, all that fur in his mouth and tickling his nose, I hadn’t even though of that!
I still wanted that furry look than my bobble beards so I decided to try a different stitch – the double loop. It’s perfect, I switched the beanie over to a double loop as well and voila – perfection!

How to get Double Loops every row
Working in a round it’s easy to get the loops on the front of your piece – by working from the back. But when working in rows it’s harder.
You could simply do a sc row between every loop row, but with this thick yarn there are only a few rows, if every other one was an SC there would be WAY less loops.
SO I decided to create a loop row every row, meaning I did a right handed loop row, then a left handed loop row. Just go slow and you’ll get it.
IF you have a hard time with the left handed loop rows you can stick with an SC row between OR you cut the yarn and restart it and go in the same direction every row.

Double Loop Crochet Santa Bearded hat pattern
Materials:
White bulky yarn (I used Baby’s first in “cotton ball”)
Hook N- 9.00mm
SANTA HAT
Stitch abbreviation:
slip stitch (sl st)
single crochet (sc)
half double crochet (hdc)
double loop stitch (insert your hook into the stitch. take yarn and wrap it clockwise around your left index finger twice (opposite of the way you’d normally hold it over your finger.). stick the hook under the loops on your finger catching all three strands with the hook. pull all three strands through the stitch, YO and pull through all 4 loops on hook.)
left handed double loop stitch (if you have a hard time with a left handed double loop substitute with a sc row instead)
extra small loop beard

row 1- sc in second ch from hook, sc 6 times hdc 7 times sc 7 times (21)
row 2- ch 1 sc double loop 19 times sc (21)
row 3- switch to left handed ch 1 sc double loop 19 times sc (21)
row 4- (back to right hand) repeat row 2 (21)
row 5- repeat row 3 (21)
row 6- (back to right hand) ch 1 sc double loop 4 times, skip a stitch, double loop twice, skip a stitch, double loop 3 times, skip a stitch, double loop twice, skip a stitch, double loop 4 times sc (17)
row 7- switch to left handed ch 1 sc double loop 4 times, ch 6, skip 7 stitches, double loop 4 times sc
row 8- back to right hand, sl st 4 times, short double loop, short double loop in each ch, short double loop in stitch, sl st 4 times

how many rows of the red would I need to do for an adult? I am a very visual learner and could never read a pattern. A friend asked me to make your bearded beanie and I decided to take on the challenge! I am proud to say that I was able to figure it out (slowly but surely) and it turned out adorable! for an adult I’d do one more row of increase at the crown before starting the sides. I usually get the length from trial and error, just keep trying it on while you make it until it’s the right length for you (remembering to leave about an 1 1/2 inches to switch back to the white yarn)

I didn’t use my puffball maker, instead I just looped it around my fingers a few times, tied it in the center tight and pulled my fingers out. I’ts not very full, or even, but I liked the way it looked keeping the loops!

Love this hat. So for the adults would i after row 17 do 6hdc then2 hdc row 18 would then be 14 hdc then 2hdc. :-/ confused :-). Thank you

I would do row 18 of 6 hdc 2hdc so your at 64 stitches around and go from there. then hdc around and repeat for 10 rows then change color.

That’s such a hard question to answer since every child has such a different shaped face and head. it works best when you have a model that you can try it on while you work. But my guess would be
baby – 0-1
toddler 1-3
child 3-10
but again it can go either way, my 1 year old was totally too big for the baby, but my niece would probably fit the baby size until she was 2, I’m sorry I don’t have better guesses than that. That’s the worst part about designing for babies, they are so DIFFERENT in their sizes!

I believe you do the SC coming from the back instead of going in the front. There should be 24 stitches instead of 48 after row 21 to accommodate for the larger yarn.

I’m not sure what you mean by back, you do the ch 2, skip 1 stitch and sl st all the way around so you end with just as many ch 2 spaces as you have sl st’s

Hello, I have made quite a few of these hats in each size, so cute! The problem I am having is the hats being too small because of the slip stitch. Not sure what is going wrong. Made toddler size for my 2 year old and slip stitch made it so tight. Any suggestions?

I think you did that row wrong, its ch 2 skip one and sl st all the way around, so you’ll have just as many ch 2 spaces and sl st’s, so it shouldn’t be tight

If you slacken the slip stitch it should be okay. One slip stitch should be equal to the length of two stitches in the hat.

The santa hat and beard is awesome!! I am currently making one for my 3 year old and am using the child size pattern (he’s got a big head ;)) I have a quick question about row 27:ch2, skip1 slip stitch around. Do I just slip stitch around? The reason I ask is in row 28 you say to sc in each 2ch spaces around…soooo do you ch2, skip 1 and then slip stitch? Thanks for any help that you can provide!

no you don’t sl st around, you ch 2, skip 1 stitch and sl st around, so you’ll 30 ch 2 spaces all the way around

Very excited to make this for my son, but I’m having trouble with the medium size beard. It says to do 21 double loop sc but it says you should have 25 loops made? And when I make 25 and get to the decrease rows, I have extra stitches… Very confused! Please help. Thanks!!

sc, is one stitch, then 23 double loops across (it did say 21, but it was incorrect thanks for bring it to my attention), then a final sc, that add’s up to 25 stitches, only 23 of them are the double loops you want to start and end each row with a sc for strength.

I’ve started, torn out and restarted your pattern a few times now. You’ve got rows 2-4 sticking with 8 stitches though when I stitched it out, I ended up with a really awkward looking tube and the following rows with the increases just looked wrong. Is that an error in the pattern or am I reading that wrong?!

I was going for an elfish kind of shape to the santa hat. It’s a tight beanie (so it would stay on his head well) but I wanted it bit to stick out and fold over like a santa hat would, so yes, it’s a tube at the end.

Hi – I love the beard. I had never tried the double loop before, so thank you for introducing me to it. I’m having trouble doing it left handed. Are you able to do it both right and left handed? Is there another way I could do it?

It just takes some practice, but yes, I do it with both hands, in both directions. For a longer beard you can pull the loops out more, adding extra rows won’t get longer, just wrap around the face more.
