Is there anything cuter than a baby with a beard? This easy crochet bobble beard pattern comes in every size from infant to adult.
I originally made a simple beard pattern as a white elephant gift, but it seemed so simple I wanted to make it look like it had more life. Then I decided to try making the beard with these bobbles and I’ll never go back to the simple beard again!
Since then I’ve added a double loop beard that is perfect for times you want to be even hairier, or santa!
To attache the beard I make this simple striped beanie pattern in 7 sizes from newborn to extra large adult.

Here is an example of all 4 beards, Large, Medium, Small and Extra Small (on an Adult, adult, toddler and baby beanies). You can see the difference in length as well as width (or is that height?) Which is why I’d suggest a hook change over beard size change if trying a different yarn.
And Baby Boy looked so cute I decided I had to add an even smaller version, here is Miss K showing off the Extra small!!! Seriously, could this BE any cuter?
I love the thinner yarn for more details, but if you’d rather use a thicker yarn try it out first, if it makes the beard too large try either going down a hook size or down a beard size.

Bobble Beard
Material:
vanna glamour (you can use any yarn of similar size, if you go up a yarn weight you might want to go down a beard size or down a hook size)
Hook I- 5.50mm
Stripped beanie
Stitches used:
chain (ch)
single crochet (sc)
half double crochet (hdc)
half double crochet decrease (hdc2tog)
bobble- Yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over once more and draw it through the first 2 loops on your hook.Repeat that process (yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over once more and draw it through the first 2 loops on your hook) 3 more times in the same stitch. There are now 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over and draw the loop through all 5 stitches. You’ve made one bobble stitch. Notice that the bobble puffs to the back side of the swatch you’re working, which will be the right side of the work.
Lego boy in a child’s beanie and medium beard, Computer boy in child’s beanie and Medium beard, Baby Boy in a toddler beanie and small beard (he was pulling on it, I swear it fits good) and Princess in a child’s beanie and small beard.
My mom is modeling the Large beard with Miss K… Love the zoolander look (seriously though, it’s a bit creepy on adult women without some fun face of some kind)

Sew row ends of beard to the inside edge of your favorite beanie, or my striped beanie, making sure it is spaced evenly between the two sides. I sewed mine about 1/2 inch up inside. I like the way it pulls and looks better than attaching RIGHT to the edge, gives you a bit of a lip. You can place the beards as far front or back as you want.

I commented on 2/9/15. Got the beard finished. This was my first time doing the Bobble Stitch & I’m so happy it turned out SO WELL! (Happy dance!) Now I have to make a red hat to match his coat. My grandson’s daddy also has a black beard, so he’ll match Daddy too! I can hardly wait to see it on him!
Ashlee
that’s awesome! I bet they look adorable together, and way to go with the bobble stitch!
Stacy
Hello Ashlee,
I love your patterns! They are co cute. Do you happen to have a guage for the bobble beard or stripped hat? Mine are coming out a different size. Thanks for the help.
Ashlee
ummmm it’s hard to do a gauge when every other stitch is a bobble! I get 6 stitches (3 bobbles, 3 hdc’s) in 2 inches, beanie is about 8HDC in 2 inches

I found your pattern in January 2015 and decided to make them for my grandsons for Christmas. My son’s and son-in-laws all have scruffs, so I thought the grandsons should match. Couldn’t the leave the girls out so I have made large flowers for them. Currently I have completed a total of 32 hats, 7 with beards, 7 with flowers, the rest are for the adults. Still have a couple more to finish as we have 2 girls due to arrive in October. This is a Christmas surprise, so will send a photo after Christmas. Love the pattern!
Ashlee
that is EPIC! I can’t wait to see a picture!

Love this beard pattern and I was able to follow it. Thanks. Mymy grandson loves his new bearded hat. I plan on making more for mom and dad and my other grandkids.
Ashlee
I’m so glad! Hope everyone loves the awesome gifts you are making them all!

First I want to say thank you for a wonderful pattern for the hat and beard. Yours is the cutest one I’ve seen on the internet. Second, I want to tell you why I went looking for the beard in the first place. My youngest sons has a beautiful thick red beard and his little nephew who is of Asian decent told him he wanted to grow up and be just like his Uncle and have a beard too. He is just turned 3 and my DIL said that he wouldn’t be able to grow a beard so I told her that I would see if I could make him one…. I think this will make him so very happy as he wants to be and do everything my son does….So I will come back after I they receive the hat and beard and let you know how he likes it. I hope it fits him….and if not I will make him another one and this one can go to his 5 year old brother or 1 year old brother…. I’m also going to make a matching hat for my son. Along with two more beanies for the his 2 brothers. Again, Thank you very much for the time you put in to making this great pattern and for sharing it for free.
Ashlee
cutest story ever! thx for sharing and I hope he loves it!

Hi Ashlee. I love your website – you are amazingly creative and talented. So, I thought I would ask you. I saw the “Mad Scientist” beard hat online http://www.boredpanda.com/mad-scientist-hat/ the other day and I want to make it. But, I am can’t find the pattern. Would you know how to make one?
Ashlee
you can use my beard (since it appears they certianly did) and something like this for the hat http://neknitter.blogspot.com/2008/10/scarecrow-wig.html, crochet any hat you want then tie strands into it.
Stephanie
I wanted to say that I love this pattern, but I have a question. I have someone who wants me to make one for her son. I cannot measure him, he is 11. Which size beanie/beard combo do you think I should use? Thanks.
Ashlee
I honestly have no idea, since it depends on 1. his head size for his age, and 2. if you crochet tight or loose. for how I crochet a medium beard, and it would be a toss up between a child or the teen/adult size beanie
Beth M
I am making this for a good friend of mine’s sons for Christmas. It is an awesome pattern. Thank you so much!
Ashlee
you are so welcome! hope your friends son likes it!
Naomi
Never mind, I finally figured it out. I had to go to your crochet & knit patterns page and find the pattern there to get to it. The links you have on this page don’t go to it (at least not for me, from any browser I used [firefox, chrome, & opera]). They go to this one: http://ashleemarie.com/oops-this-content-is-members-only/?wlfrom=%2Fcrochet-striped-beanie-pattern-multiple-sizes%2F
Ashlee
GAH, just when I thoguht we had the glitch fixed, thank you, all the links should be corrected now, I appreciate you letting me know!

I am having trouble making the beard ,,,I am trying to make the one for the toddler hat..but it has a lot of rows which I do not understand so can you help me Please…I can do the bobble stitch but how to do the mustache I don’t know…Thanks
Ashlee
the mustache bobbles are made on the opposite side from the rest of the bobbles, thats why you need to use a pencil eraser to push the bobbles ot the other side, is that the issue your having?
Christine
Oh my goodness this is so adorable! I have to share it to the whole world! haha would you mind if I make a video tutorial?
Ashlee
yes I would mind, I allow people to sell products made from my patterns, but not to share the patterns themselves. and a video does just that, shares the patterns.
Josh
Hi,
First off, this is a super creative pattern and I shared your website with just about everybody I know. You have some awesome stuff on here 🙂
For this pattern, before I get started, I was just wondering about the asterisk (*) marking. It looks like those function as parentheses in a way, so that if it says “*hdc, bobble stitch* 5 times” it is just a shorter way of writing “hdc, bobble stitch” five times in a row. Is that correct?
If so, what does it mean when it says “*hdc, bobble stitch* repeat across,” like in Row 2 of the small, where it says “ch2, turn, hdc, *hdc, bobble stitch* repeat across, hdc twice (31)” ? How many times would you do the *hdc, bobble stitch* ?
Thanks again, and I hope you have a wonderful holiday season.
Josh
Wait, I might have figured it out… For ““ch2, turn, hdc, *hdc, bobble stitch* repeat across, hdc twice (31)” would “repeat across” just mean that you keep going until you have two stitches less for those last two hdc? That would make it: ch2, turn, hdc, then *hdc, bobble stitch* 14 times (for 28 stitches), then 2 hdc?
thanks!
Ashlee
yup, you got it right!
Sam
Hello! This is so super cute! I’m planning on making it for my BIL for Christmas! How much yarn does the large typically take? I have some left over yarn from another project, but I’m not sure if it’ll be enough. Thanks!
Ashlee
depends on the size of course, and the yarn. The vanna glamour yarn I used is different sizes than a normal skein of yarn. I got 2-3 beards out of it

Hi! I am making an extra small beanie for my friends baby boy. I’m having trouble with row four as well. I’ve looked through all the comments to see if my problem was already addressed and came across this reply. I have all the correct number of stitches as you’ve specified. But now there is a long tail on one side from the previous rows. I’ve pulled it out and redone it several times and I keep getting the same problem. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong.
Ashlee
I’m very confused, what do you mean by long tail? feel free to send a picture to me ashlee@ashleemarie.com
Karen
I was wondering, now that I have had such a great time making the beard 😀 How do I go about attaching it to the hat? Help please! 🙂
Ashlee
I use the same yarn color as the hat ribbing (so that if the yarn goes through the other side you won’t see it) and sew it into the hat, attaching it to the inner rib’s.
Elena
Hello! I absolutely adore your blog and your creations are just stunning! Is it possible to give measurements of each beard size? Height of beard, width of beard? I normally struggle and have to adjust patterns to make anything, as we only have light worsted in South Africa (dk yarn), and I also crochet very tightly, so I will probably end up with a beard thats too small for the recipient if I make one. 🙁 Can you please help with measurements?
Ashlee
I don’t have measurements cause they are always so different based on the yarn and how the crocheter crochets (tight or loose). I suggest working through the first bobble row and measure it against the person who will be wearing it.
Tonya
Just wanted to say how much I love your pattern! it came out perfect. Can I sell the finished product? Of course I will post a link giving you credit. Thank you!
Ashlee
I do allow people to sell items made from my patterns I just ask that you include credit for design and a link to the pattern so that those who want to make their own can (people who make don’t buy anyway)
Sorry
My daughter in law wants some of these but after trying to do it your way I am having to change too much of it for it to work out right. Great idea but not best pattern. So glad I did not spend money on it or the beard. Chain 2 needs to be counted for beanie to work out and beard is not even in stitches on both sides of it.
Ashlee
I’m sorry you feel that way. I purposely had the bobble alternate, not be even in every row, I perfer the way it looks and I never count the chains, that’s probably why your getting your bobble off. but we all crochet differently and I often change patterns (like ones that crochet in ch’s) to fit my style. you need to be able to visualize the way the pattern is written to make the changes necessary to fit your style. if your crocheting in the chains you should then take off the stitch on each side your replacing the ch with (since it’s written to ignore the ch’s)
Ana
Love it and so easy to make!! Appreciate giving this as free. I will by the odd version for sure. I also used the beanie and loved it.
Ashlee
I’m so glad you enjoyed the pattern.
Renee
I am new to crocheting, and this is the first pattern that I was able to read and succeed!! I have made a bunch of these with and without the beard and they are a huge hit! Thank you so much for a well written free pattern!
Ashlee
YAY! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
