Is there anything cuter than a baby with a beard? This easy crochet bobble beard pattern comes in every size from infant to adult.
I originally made a simple beard pattern as a white elephant gift, but it seemed so simple I wanted to make it look like it had more life. Then I decided to try making the beard with these bobbles and I’ll never go back to the simple beard again!
Since then I’ve added a double loop beard that is perfect for times you want to be even hairier, or santa!
To attache the beard I make this simple striped beanie pattern in 7 sizes from newborn to extra large adult.

Here is an example of all 4 beards, Large, Medium, Small and Extra Small (on an Adult, adult, toddler and baby beanies). You can see the difference in length as well as width (or is that height?) Which is why I’d suggest a hook change over beard size change if trying a different yarn.
And Baby Boy looked so cute I decided I had to add an even smaller version, here is Miss K showing off the Extra small!!! Seriously, could this BE any cuter?
I love the thinner yarn for more details, but if you’d rather use a thicker yarn try it out first, if it makes the beard too large try either going down a hook size or down a beard size.

Bobble Beard
Material:
vanna glamour (you can use any yarn of similar size, if you go up a yarn weight you might want to go down a beard size or down a hook size)
Hook I- 5.50mm
Stripped beanie
Stitches used:
chain (ch)
single crochet (sc)
half double crochet (hdc)
half double crochet decrease (hdc2tog)
bobble- Yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over once more and draw it through the first 2 loops on your hook.Repeat that process (yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over once more and draw it through the first 2 loops on your hook) 3 more times in the same stitch. There are now 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over and draw the loop through all 5 stitches. You’ve made one bobble stitch. Notice that the bobble puffs to the back side of the swatch you’re working, which will be the right side of the work.
Lego boy in a child’s beanie and medium beard, Computer boy in child’s beanie and Medium beard, Baby Boy in a toddler beanie and small beard (he was pulling on it, I swear it fits good) and Princess in a child’s beanie and small beard.
My mom is modeling the Large beard with Miss K… Love the zoolander look (seriously though, it’s a bit creepy on adult women without some fun face of some kind)

Sew row ends of beard to the inside edge of your favorite beanie, or my striped beanie, making sure it is spaced evenly between the two sides. I sewed mine about 1/2 inch up inside. I like the way it pulls and looks better than attaching RIGHT to the edge, gives you a bit of a lip. You can place the beards as far front or back as you want.

Brace yourself, I have a stupid question. 🙂 If I’m making a hat for my 10-month-old nephew and cannot find my I- hook anywhere, do you think it would work to go up a size or two to use my F-hook? I don’t live close enough to just try it on him.
BTW, I absolutely LOVE this pattern. I made it for my brother-in-law too a while back. 🙂
Ashlee
do you have an H or J? F is a far stretch! but yes changing the hat sizes will be the right thing to do.

This question may have been answered in previous comments, but there are so many I didn’t look through them all! lol I’m interested in making one of these for my friend’s 6 month old baby. Which size do you recommend for that? Please and thank you! 🙂
Ashlee
it depends the the size of the babies head (they are all so different, esp at the younger ages) and depending on which yarn you use, your hook and how tight or loose your crochet. The best thing to do is to guess at the size (my niece has on the extra small beard in the picture and is a very fat 5 month old at this point) and do the first bobble row and test the size.

Ashlee — I had a request to make one of these for a friend’s 4 yr old grandson — – wish I knew how to post pictures for you even though I don’t have anyone to model it — but it turned out REALLY great and my friend loved it in the colors she had requested. The hat and beard were both simple and fun to make — I’ll let her know it might be a little tight putting on the first time but I didn’t have a problem getting it on the “foam head” I use to display them.
Ashlee
yay! so glad you made it an enjoyed it! you can always tag me on social media to show me a picture @ashleemariecakes on FB or instagram!

I can no longer see the pattern…..is it still available?
Wanda swartz
Do I need permission to use your pictures to sell your hats that I crochet?
Ashlee
you may NOT use my picture to sell anything – you need to show people what YOUR work looks like – you can sell items made from my pattern but you need to use your own images 1. it’s illegal to use my images without permission and 2. everyone crochets differently and if you use my image but sell something that looks slightly different people will be upset. Also you need to include a link and give me credit for the pattern.

I have been trying to download the pattern for this but the download button only brings me to the top of the comments… 🙁 is there any way you can email the pattern to me?
Ashlee
that’s weird – the download pattern should take you to a shopping cart – it’s free while you stay on the blog but for the pdf there is a $1 convenience fee to help pay for the automated mailing system that sends the PDF’s – trust me it doesn’t even come close to covering the cost but I send so many pdf’s I couldn’t do it without the service.

Hi Ashlee,
Is your pattern still available? I’ve got a grandson and son-in-law that would look mighty fine in one ?
Regards,
Deborah
Ashlee
I’m not sure what is going on – the pattern is RIGHT there in the post that you commented on – I am looking right at it. I didn’t take it away – if your looking for the printable pdf you just click here https://te270.infusionsoft.com/app/manageCart/addProduct?productId=20

Hi! I’m trying to make one of these for a friends son. I’m doing the smallest one and for the life of me, row 4 isn’t working. I don’t have enough stitches for what you are asking. I’m sure I have the bobble and everything down pat cause the first 3 rows are fine.
Ashlee
it’s the decrease row – so you should end up with less, your doing a hdc2tog 4 times, which will bring it from 27 stitches to 23 stitches. as long as row three had 27 you should be just fine. each hdc2tog will use two stitches but create just one. does that help?

Good day,
I love the pattern but I’m having trouble with the beard. Could u please tell me how many bobbles and how many hdc should be. I’m on row 2.
Thanks so much
Ashlee
which size pattern are you using? that will make a difference
extra small will be 13 bobbles 14 hdc
small would be 14 bobbles 17 hdc
medium would be 17 bobbles and 18 hdc
large would be 18 bobbles and 21 hdc
Simone Jacobsen
Thank you for the pattern, it’s lovely!
I’m making the large beard, but I do not understand row 13. How do I make 8 bobbles and 7 hdc’s in the 9 ch’s from row 12? Can you elaborate, please?
Ashlee
chains are longer than stitches – and the chains help bring the beard shape together – but you also want the mustache to be nice and full – I work the mustach around the chain – not IN the chain so the stitches can slide and you can fit them all in.

I totally get this pattern I have no problems with the hdc or the bobble. I have question about the instruction to “chain 5, skip 7 st” I chain 5 but it is not long enough to skip 7. I’m just totally confused. Thanks for your help.
Ashlee
make sure you don’t chain super tight – just regular – and yes it will be a little shorter but that actually helps with the shaping of the beard – help pull the sides up and curls it around a little too
Cheryl
On the large beard row 13 it says to do bobble, sc 7 times. is that just in the chain? because that many will not fit in just the chain? HELP !
Ashlee
yes that’s in the chain – remember chains alone stretch and are longer than stitches would be – AND I think it looks better with the mustache nice and full – but you can alter it if you need to

I bought the Vanna’s Choice Lion Brand 4 wt yarn for the striped beanie and Vanna’s Choice Moonstone Yarn for the beard but the Moonstone comes in 2 wt fine. Do you have any suggestions on what hook and what size beard I would use for this fine yarn so the beard will be the right size for the toddler beanie?
Ashlee
the 2wt is what I used – although I’ve used the 4 wt as well – I don’t change the hook size – it is just a different look with the thinner yarn. if you changed the hook size you’d end up with a super tiny beard – with tiny bobbles – but you can try it – I’d recommend just doing one row to see if it would easily fit around the chin from each ear before making the full beard.

Love it!! I just made for my sister, brother in law and 2 kids …..1st crochet hate project! They came out great! I wish I could post their family pic here!÷ they are headed off to a st Patricks day parade today, so the hats are green and the beards are orange. It’s FREEZING today….so the beards and hats will really help them to not freeze their shamrocks off out there!! Thank you for the great instructions. All beards fit well, and hats are easy on and off (sewed on permanantly)
hannah
what size hat should I use for 4 to 12 month year old.
Ashlee
it totally depends on the size of the childs head – my but 4 months to 12 months is actually a HUGE difference in head size, as that’s when babies heads are growing so much – they actually slow down after that, my baby went through a few sizes during those months. My niece in the picture was 5 months old wearing the extra small and it was tight on her – I’d go for the small, better to be a little big and grow into it

Hi is there a way to get the pattern, there are so many advertisements on this page. I love the idea and the pattern want to make it for my grandbaby!
Ashlee
yes I offer a pdf you can download for $1 (click the red “download” button) if you want to skip using my site for the free pattern.

I really loved this pattern. I just finished a beard and beanie for my brother and my son. They love it. Thank you for the free patter. It was super easy to follow.
Ashlee
you are so very welcome! so glad you enjoyed it and that they loved it!
Jessi
I wish I could show you the picture I took of my 10 month old son with this on. Omg 💖💖. I used Vanna’s choice, gray marble for the hat (baby) and some blue that I’ve had forever for the beard (extra small). Perfection! Patterns were both super easy to follow, and I connected them at the bottom color changed, which made it easy to sew together. And it only took me a few hours! Now I just need to get him to wear it for more than two seconds 😂
