Easy to crochet striped beanie with a ribbed edge – includes all sizes from infant to large adult

free pattern for this striped beanie

(Princess is wearing a Child’s size, The Reader is wearing an Adult, the four hat’s below are: adult, child, toddler, baby)

So last year I wrote a pattern for a bearded beanie, and the number one request I get is for a child’s size. But what size, there are SO many sizes for children.

And do you know how LONG that pattern would be? to incorporate each and every bearded beanie size options? Insane.

So I decided to break it into two posts, a beanie post, and a beard post, today is the Beanie, and tomorrow are the bobble beards, mix and match to get the right fit for you child/teen/baby/adult!

I actually wanted more pictures to share, but didn’t want to wait any longer now that the patterns were done and tested… I’ll be adding more pictures as I take some!

I took thread that matched the hat and I stitched it to the inner ribs from the brim.

Hey I am currently making the striped beanie in the extra large adult size and I had a question about row 10 Row 10- Ch2, hdc in each st, sl st in top of first hdc. 64 dc (it says first HDC in each st then at the end it says 64 DC ) do we do HDC or DC ? and also on Row 9 the final count was 68 but then in row 10 its says do 64? but it also says do a HDC in each st so wouldn’t that be 68? or are we to decrease? confused please help
    Thanks

Great pattern. Though I used an I hook & it’s waaaaaay too big. Making this for my BFF, so I can just size it to myself, but I’m wondering if I should use an H hook instead. I’m using Red Heart Super Saver yarn. That’s all I can get in this small MO town I live in. Whenever I make hats, I always use RHSS & an I hook. Why this hat is so large I have no idea. It’s a very nice pattern! I love the FPDC & BPDC @ the end. Thank you for making it free.

what SIZE are you making? And yes, the yarn makes a huge difference in what size that hat ends up as well as how tightly or loosely you crochet. no one pattern is going to end up the same for everyone. try the next size down.

I was giving the large size a go. I’ll try an H hook tomorrow.

or you could just go down a hat size, that’s a thicker yarn and even going down a hook size might not be enough and might make it too “thick”

thank you so much for putting all your hard work into these patterns. they are fantastic! i’m working on the baby size hat and noticed that the pattern calls for rows 9-11 to repeat, but then there’s another row 11 where the color changes. do i change colors on row 11? should that really be row 12? really it doesn’t matter to me about the color change, i just want to make sure i have enough rows so the hat ends up the right length.

Thank you so much for these patterns! They are amazing! I am new at this whole crochet thing but was able to figure out your patterns with a little help from youtube. I am now working on more gifts than I can count. I was just curious if you had a way to make the beards detachable? It would be nice to be able to wear them as you want. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. You are one amazingly talented woman! Thank you again!

no, I have no interest in a beard by itself, and selfishly I only design and make things I like, sorry. If your face is cold enough to cover your face you certainly want your ears covered too 😉 so I didn’t make it that way. I’ve seen a few others do it that way, I believe they create loops with ch’s, attached at the ends of to the top and bottom row.

I am going to attempt to make the beards and beanies interchangeable using buttons on the insides of the beanies. Then the beanies can be worn alone, or with whichever beard is preferred that day. My fiancee mentioned that he really wanted a bearded beanie, and I want to surprise him with this “deluxe” version. Maybe that gives you another way of possibly altering the pattern to fit your needs. I am so flipping excited about these beanies and beards! These patterns are such gems!

I know lots of people have done chains for going around the ears, or buttons, but for me my kids would just take them off, lose them and complain about the buttons so sewing them in is best for my situation. Personally I’d rather just make another hat, they are so fast ,if they wanted one without a beard (my kids have a ton of beanies already of course)

Just wanted to say thank you for this pattern. My friend just had a baby and she wanted me to make this hat with the beard. Her husband has a beard and mustache and she thought it would be adorable to get a pic with the baby wearing this.

I’m not sure what your asking do you hdc in the next two, or hdc in the next two? yes…

It’s a pretty standard beanie, after the first row/circle the next row you double ever stitch, then double ever other stitch, then double every 3rd stitch, etc…. so that row is hdc, hdc, 2hdc, hdc, hdc, 2hdc, etc…

      make sense?

You have marvelous designs and well explained! I noticed that you used same size hook to make all the hats. Could I do the same? I have size H and K.

I use my i hook, if you use a smaller or larger hook you’ll have to adjust the pattern, either try the size up or down to adjust.

Hello there! I have a question about the pattern and its probably something I should understand but here I am. I am not new to crochet but I have never made a hat before. I found this pattern and I couldnt wait to make it because my 6 yr old son is obsessed with facial hair. Anyhow I tried Googleing first but no luck. In the beginning i make a magic ring, then chain two on the ring? Or off of it? I’m just confused about the chaining part in each row. Somehow when I get all the way around to the beginning it looks weird where the chains are. After 5 rows I ripped it out and thought I better ask. Hopefully you can understand my question. Thanks!

the ch comes off the ring, to get to the height of the stitches you’ll be doing in the ring around. every row you have to chain to get to the stitch height, just like rows or rounds. Does that help

Oh my gosh these are so amazing! Thank you so much for all the handwork and time you put into these patterns. I made the orange and brown one for my boyfriend who works outside and he loves it and everyone always smiles when he’s walking around:) I checked back here and saw all the different sizes, you’re awesome!!! I’m so happy I can make one for my nephew, he’s 3! I wanted to ask how you would feel if I made some to sell at a fundraiser we are trying to raise money for a friend who has leukemia. I saw that you would like credit back to the you, site, and free pattern link so I will be sure to do that. Thank you!

honestly I hate answering this question. the reason I don’t put a measurement out there is because it’s so different for everyone. the yarn you use, the brand of hook, how tight/loose you crochet… I don’t want to say – 18 inches and have someone email me getting bad because it didn’t turn out the same for them. So i give general sizes that you can base your work around. go to the last increase row, and that will give you the circumference, if you want it larger add another increase row!!!! Sorry if that didn’t make sense.

then don’t change the color 😉 just stick with the hdc row your already repeating until it’s the length want (remembering to leave room for the final ribbed rows)

I always attach it but feel free to add buttons to the inside of the beanie if you want!

I am absolutely loving this hat/beard combo! My question for you (forgive me, I’m still a bit new at crocheting): when I start the beanie with the magic ring, do I need to start with a row of sc? I’ve never just started off with a HDC before.

are you using the same yarn weight? if your yarn is thicker it will be really thick and curl. Or you might simply crochet tighter than I do. Try a thinner yarn, or larger hook and see if that helps.

yes, I just use the same yarn as the brim of the beanie and sew the beard into the inside. Some people prefer buttons, or adding chains for wrapping around ears, but there is no right way, just whatever you prefer!

I love these and will be making them for my cousins, one of their babies, my brother and his baby for Christmas, but I have a question on yardage. I need to make three adult hats, two large beards (my brother already has an enormous beard of his own) and two x-small beards. I haven’t seen any yardage in your patterns, but it would really help me, as I have to order it and have it sent to France, so I can’t just go run to the store if I need more… Would be great to have just a rough estimate. Thank you!!

First of all, I want to say this is a great pattern and I’m super excited to try it out. I just have one question: Do you know the approximate ages for the different sizes? I’m doing them for three of my little cousins ages 4, 8, and 10. I’m not sure if I should do toddler or child for the 4-year-old and if I should do child or teen for the other two. Thanks a bunch!

that’s why I wrote the sizes I used for each child under their pictures so you could see the sizes on and try to judge. Seriously sizing is the WORST! Every child it SO different it’s so hard to judge. I prefer to work with my model close to try on. And sometimes I mixed sizes sometimes a small beard but medium hat. I’m so sorry I wish it was easier, but if I set a rule people get angry with me when it doesn’t fit! you can see more pictures on the beard pattern

Hi Ashlee, thanks a lot for your efforts and great patterns. I’d like to suggest the way to specify the size. As it’s absolutely true that every child is different, the easiest way, I think, is to use the head circumference as a size: for just a beanie it’s enough to know the circumference taken against the forehead, and for a bobble bearded beanie I’d add the circumference from the chin through the vertex (I hope I’ve explained clearly, I’m Russian;))
        Happy crocheting!

The children in your photos are beautiful and handsome! The little blonde fellow is a born model!

You are obviously a talented photographer as well!

My adult son asked me to make him a tight fitting beanie to wear under his ballcap which he always wears. Your beanie pattern is perfect!

His sons asked Gramma to make them Bob Marley hats from their descriptions of how they wanted their individual hats to be! Well, 2 days ago Daddy brought them to pick up their hats and they were THRILLED with the way their hats turned out.

NOW, I will also have a BEARD to attach to their hats to further represent Bob Marley! They will get a real HOOT out of their BEARDS when I see them in a couple of days! THANK-YOU for giving me a terrific beard pattern that is PERFECT for these Bob Marley hats.

It’s not clear to me how these boys, at 10 and 11, have recently become interested in Bob Marley and wanting a hat like he wore but Bob Marley’s been a favorite Reggae singer of mine for years!

I just made the child size hat using Caron Simply Soft (4) yarn and an I (5.5mm) hook. It’s just a little bit big on my almost 5 year old, and actually fits me pretty well. (I would have added a row or two for length if it was for me.) I thought I’d post to give people an idea of how it turns out.
It’s not too big for my 5 year old to wear, and she’ll be able to wear it as she continues to grow! Beautiful hat and great pattern! Now I need to try a beard!
I am going to make one for my cousins son who is about a year old and will do the toddler hat, Caron Simply Soft, and try an H hook. I’d rather have it be too big. He’s across the sea, so I can’t try it on him first!

GAH, I hate size questions cause every child/adult head is so so SO different and I never want to promise something and have people disappointed. I would choose to error on the side of too big, but 10… the teen could be way to big, or it might fit perfect! It’s also hard cause everyone crochet’s so differently (tight/loose/etc…)

    Hi Ashley!
These are SO MUCH FUN! I’m making one for my 5 year-old nephew for Christmas 😀

    Quick question…
The pattern ends with two or three rows of: “Ch1, *FPhdc in next st, BPhdc in next st* around, sl st to top of ch 2, fasten off weave in ends”

I’m a little perplexed what “ch2” refers to.

Do you start the first of those rows with ch 1, makes 30 x *FPhdc, BPhdc*,
then a ch 2 and a second (and third) row of 30 x *FPhdc, BPhdc*,
and end with a slip stitch on top of the ch 2 ?

    Thanks you so much!

Hi – I need to make one of these for a 2 year old boy with a 14″ head. Can you tell me which on would be the most appropriate? Also for the beard that goes with it.

    Thanks for these patterns!

honestly I recently moved and I don’t have access to any of my hats, ALSO it totally depends on how tight or loose you crochet! I can in NO WAY promise any sizing. for my year old I did a toddler size with a small beard. I’d do just the first 2 rows of the beard and measure it before finishing it

    Hi,

I just got into crochet and found your pattern on Pintrest. Love it! So adorable. I know that everyone crochets tighter/looser, but I was wondering aprox. how much yardage you use per hat with the yarn you listed and then I can figure out how much I should use with my gauge, yarn type, etc. Thanks!

I have no idea, I have about 5 twelve gallon buckets of yarn and I just use what I have. I can usually get 3 hats from a fresh ball, but if it’s been partially used then less. I just make something and share the pattern, I don’t really pay attention to this stuff (thus why it’s free)

Hi Ashley. I really like your beard and striped beanie patterns. Very well written, but I want you to know that a pop up comes on that says, “it may lead to inappropriate matter or spam”.

Hi, I was wondering in you know the circumference of each hat. I’m going to be making one for a co-workers son (he’s going to be three) and I’m not sure if I should go with a toddler or a child hat.

Because everyone crochets so differently they always turn out different. I’d go with the childs hat, better to be a little too big than too small, the difference between child and toddler is very small. UNLESS you crochet large, then go with the toddler… GAH, no help at all, sorry!

Hi Ashlee, I know it’s been quite a while since you’ve made these hats, but I was wondering if you happened to know what color of Vanna glamour yarn you used on your niece’s stripes and beard in the photo sample of the baby beanie and extra small beard? I have had a customer request that specific color and just thought I would ask in case you knew. Thanks!

First, thank you so much for putting so much detail into this pattern and the bobble beard! I made my friends’ new baby one and she absolutely loved it. I actually put a button on the corner of the beard and a loop inside the hat so it could be worn with or without it. He looks so cute in it. I’m currently working on an extra large adult hat now. From a relatively new crochet-er, thank you again!

depends on the child and how tight you crochet and the yarn your using. I suggest working through the first bobble layer of a small and measuring it against the child

Hi! I was wondering. What circumference of head would the teen/adult size fit as compared to the extra large size? I am in the process of making a beanie and bobble beard for my husband and I would like it to be just right. I apologise if anyone has asked this question before me and I am merely making you repeat yourself.

it depends – on how you crochet (tight or loose) so my advice is always to try it on the person as you go and adjust as needed sometimes going up or down a hook size or even up or down a pattern size.

For the toddler hat in row 2 does that ch 2 count in the 8 hdc or do I just skip it? And join with slip stich to the 1st hdc or the ch 2?

skip it – you never count chains as stitches unless the pattern specifically says to

I love this pattern! I tend to use DK yarn for most projects – do you have a DK pattern at all or any recommendations of how I would make a hat like this with DK yarn?

    thanks so much!

it depends on the yarn weight – even DK yarn has weight – as long as the weight fits the hook size your just fine – if it’s a LOT thicker and you need to move up a hook size just consider going down a hat size – or crocheting a little loser

    Hi Ashlee,
I’m a little confused on the hook size, as when I used the 4 weight yarn and an I (5.5) hook which was listed in the material, and it was way too big also. You said in the materials that you used the Vanna Glamour for the hat as week, and an I hook, but isn’t that a 2 weight yarn? Could this be the difference?

everyone crochets differently – a little tight or a little loose – if you find that the size isn’t working out you can use a different pattern size or go down a hook size. I used the vanna glamour for the stripes – cause I also used them for the beards – yes they are different weights but it just changes the look, it totally works. If you changed hook size part way through that would cause issues. If you look at all the hats I made they are actually a TON of different yarn weights, but by using the same hook I just ended up with a tight/fat hat or a loose thin hat (or normal hat) but all about the same size.

Bless you for writing a good crochet pattern that was so easy to follow. So many crochet patterns, especially free ones, have so many errors or are difficult to follow because of some assumptions they never really articulate. This was so easy to follow and my nephew looks PRECIOUS in the hat and beard.
