Easy to crochet striped beanie with a ribbed edge – includes all sizes from infant to large adult
(Princess is wearing a Child’s size, The Reader is wearing an Adult, the four hat’s below are: adult, child, toddler, baby)
So last year I wrote a pattern for a bearded beanie, and the number one request I get is for a child’s size. But what size, there are SO many sizes for children.
And do you know how LONG that pattern would be? to incorporate each and every bearded beanie size options? Insane.
So I decided to break it into two posts, a beanie post, and a beard post, today is the Beanie, and tomorrow are the bobble beards, mix and match to get the right fit for you child/teen/baby/adult!
I actually wanted more pictures to share, but didn’t want to wait any longer now that the patterns were done and tested… I’ll be adding more pictures as I take some!

Ashlee

Could u plz do a YouTube video showing how u make the hat AND beard together? In baby size. Thnks! Love ur vids!
Ashlee
my youtube channel is all about food – I won’t be doing any crochet on it but I’ll work on getting a video up – I’m just slammed
Kelly Youngman
Can you elaborate on how the “beard” attaches to the beanie? Thanks ever so.
Ashlee
I took thread that matched the hat and I stitched it to the inner ribs from the brim.
Angie
Hey I am currently making the striped beanie in the extra large adult size and I had a question about row 10 Row 10- Ch2, hdc in each st, sl st in top of first hdc. 64 dc (it says first HDC in each st then at the end it says 64 DC ) do we do HDC or DC ? and also on Row 9 the final count was 68 but then in row 10 its says do 64? but it also says do a HDC in each st so wouldn’t that be 68? or are we to decrease? confused please help
Thanks
Angie
Ashlee
Thanks for bringing the typo to my attention, the pattern is fixed now.

what is the magic ring?
Ashlee
here is my tutorial for the magic ring http://ashleemarie.com/crochet-magic-ring-start/
Melissa
Great pattern. Though I used an I hook & it’s waaaaaay too big. Making this for my BFF, so I can just size it to myself, but I’m wondering if I should use an H hook instead. I’m using Red Heart Super Saver yarn. That’s all I can get in this small MO town I live in. Whenever I make hats, I always use RHSS & an I hook. Why this hat is so large I have no idea. It’s a very nice pattern! I love the FPDC & BPDC @ the end. Thank you for making it free.
Ashlee
what SIZE are you making? And yes, the yarn makes a huge difference in what size that hat ends up as well as how tightly or loosely you crochet. no one pattern is going to end up the same for everyone. try the next size down.
Melissa
I was giving the large size a go. I’ll try an H hook tomorrow.
Ashlee
or you could just go down a hat size, that’s a thicker yarn and even going down a hook size might not be enough and might make it too “thick”
Katie from Katie's Kozies
Thank you so much for this pattern! I was looking for a long time for one to give as gifts to family. Do you mind if I sell my finished products? I’d be sure and credit the pattern back to this post.
Thanks again!

as long as you give me credit, and link to the pattern so those people who want to make their own can I’m fine with it.

Thanks for the patterns. Can’t wait to get started. One problem – I don’t know how to do a half double crochet (beginner). Please help.

I just love the baby hat with the beard!!!! It’s the face on the baby that cracked me up. I love all of them but the white one floored me. Thanks for these patterns, I will get good use out of them.

Ashlee
I love my sweet nieces face, so adorable! Those big eyes!
Holly
thank you so much for putting all your hard work into these patterns. they are fantastic! i’m working on the baby size hat and noticed that the pattern calls for rows 9-11 to repeat, but then there’s another row 11 where the color changes. do i change colors on row 11? should that really be row 12? really it doesn’t matter to me about the color change, i just want to make sure i have enough rows so the hat ends up the right length.
Ashlee
thanks for catching that- the post is fixed now! It should have been rows 9-10 repeat row 8, then the colors start to change.
Monica Price
Hi i was wondering were I can find this beard pattern at? I love the bubbles!
Ashlee
thank you so much! Because i posted this first I forgot to go back and link up the bobble beards when they went live! All linked up now!
Kristin Schmidt
Thank you so much for these patterns! They are amazing! I am new at this whole crochet thing but was able to figure out your patterns with a little help from youtube. I am now working on more gifts than I can count. I was just curious if you had a way to make the beards detachable? It would be nice to be able to wear them as you want. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. You are one amazingly talented woman! Thank you again!
Ashlee
no, I have no interest in a beard by itself, and selfishly I only design and make things I like, sorry. If your face is cold enough to cover your face you certainly want your ears covered too 😉 so I didn’t make it that way. I’ve seen a few others do it that way, I believe they create loops with ch’s, attached at the ends of to the top and bottom row.
Vanessa Cheistopher
I am going to attempt to make the beards and beanies interchangeable using buttons on the insides of the beanies. Then the beanies can be worn alone, or with whichever beard is preferred that day. My fiancee mentioned that he really wanted a bearded beanie, and I want to surprise him with this “deluxe” version. Maybe that gives you another way of possibly altering the pattern to fit your needs. I am so flipping excited about these beanies and beards! These patterns are such gems!
Ashlee
I know lots of people have done chains for going around the ears, or buttons, but for me my kids would just take them off, lose them and complain about the buttons so sewing them in is best for my situation. Personally I’d rather just make another hat, they are so fast ,if they wanted one without a beard (my kids have a ton of beanies already of course)
Michelle Sands
Just wanted to say thank you for this pattern. My friend just had a baby and she wanted me to make this hat with the beard. Her husband has a beard and mustache and she thought it would be adorable to get a pic with the baby wearing this.
Ashlee
your so welcome! i hope the pictures turn out great!
Michelle Sands
When it says hdc in next two am I doing one hdc into the next two or am i doing hdc in each two stitches? Its row 4 on the infant instructions
Michelle Sands
I figured it out thank you anyways.
Ashlee
I’m glad you figured it out, I’m sorry but I only answer comments once a month, it takes so much time to answer every comment and I just can’t have it taking up time every day.
Nadine
Was the pattern updated with this correction? I am a beginner and want to make this for my new great nephew.
Ashlee
there was no correction, she was just looking for clarification.
Ashlee
I’m not sure what your asking do you hdc in the next two, or hdc in the next two? yes…
It’s a pretty standard beanie, after the first row/circle the next row you double ever stitch, then double ever other stitch, then double every 3rd stitch, etc…. so that row is hdc, hdc, 2hdc, hdc, hdc, 2hdc, etc…
make sense?
T
Hi,
You have marvelous designs and well explained! I noticed that you used same size hook to make all the hats. Could I do the same? I have size H and K.
Ashlee
I use my i hook, if you use a smaller or larger hook you’ll have to adjust the pattern, either try the size up or down to adjust.
heather l
Hello there! I have a question about the pattern and its probably something I should understand but here I am. I am not new to crochet but I have never made a hat before. I found this pattern and I couldnt wait to make it because my 6 yr old son is obsessed with facial hair. Anyhow I tried Googleing first but no luck. In the beginning i make a magic ring, then chain two on the ring? Or off of it? I’m just confused about the chaining part in each row. Somehow when I get all the way around to the beginning it looks weird where the chains are. After 5 rows I ripped it out and thought I better ask. Hopefully you can understand my question. Thanks!
Ashlee
the ch comes off the ring, to get to the height of the stitches you’ll be doing in the ring around. every row you have to chain to get to the stitch height, just like rows or rounds. Does that help
Alissa
Oh my gosh these are so amazing! Thank you so much for all the handwork and time you put into these patterns. I made the orange and brown one for my boyfriend who works outside and he loves it and everyone always smiles when he’s walking around:) I checked back here and saw all the different sizes, you’re awesome!!! I’m so happy I can make one for my nephew, he’s 3! I wanted to ask how you would feel if I made some to sell at a fundraiser we are trying to raise money for a friend who has leukemia. I saw that you would like credit back to the you, site, and free pattern link so I will be sure to do that. Thank you!
Alissa
Ashlee
I’m so glad you like the pattern! I’m totally okay with people selling items made from my pattern. in fact it’s totally legal to make and sell items from any pattern, you just can’t share the pattern, or any of my pictures. I hope your fundraiser goes well!
stephanie
What is the circumference for the teen/adult beanie?
Ashlee
honestly I hate answering this question. the reason I don’t put a measurement out there is because it’s so different for everyone. the yarn you use, the brand of hook, how tight/loose you crochet… I don’t want to say – 18 inches and have someone email me getting bad because it didn’t turn out the same for them. So i give general sizes that you can base your work around. go to the last increase row, and that will give you the circumference, if you want it larger add another increase row!!!! Sorry if that didn’t make sense.
stephanie
What size hook for the teen / adult one
Ashlee
the hook size is the same for every hat, listed in the materials section: Hook I- 5.50mm
Gloria
I see the pattern for the beanie but not for the beard. Can you e-mail it to me? Thank you so much, it is so cute!!! Thanks for sharing!!!!
Ashlee
it’s linked right in the post, but clearly not good enough, sorry about that. bobble beard pattern
Ashley
What do I do if:
1. I don’t want to change colors
2. I want to add buttons to make it removable
Thanks a bunch!
Ashlee
then don’t change the color 😉 just stick with the hdc row your already repeating until it’s the length want (remembering to leave room for the final ribbed rows)
I always attach it but feel free to add buttons to the inside of the beanie if you want!
willa
what is a magic ring and how do i make it.
Ashlee
magic ring hope that helps
Lauren
Hi there,
I am absolutely loving this hat/beard combo! My question for you (forgive me, I’m still a bit new at crocheting): when I start the beanie with the magic ring, do I need to start with a row of sc? I’ve never just started off with a HDC before.
Thanks!
Ashlee
nope, you can totally start with the hdc, or any other stitch you just need to chain before you get started to the right height!
Chazity
I’m imagining that these hats only take one skein of yarn or less? Even the adult sized ones? Your patterns are great! Thank you for being so generous and sharing them with us for free!
Ashlee
less, way less. maybe half of one for the adult one, if that! sorry that I don’t pay enough attention to stuff like that! gah! and your welcome.
Lindsey
Hi Ashlee,
I was wondering do you sell these? If so how much do you charge? Am expecting a boy in Dec. and think this is so cute and would like him to have one 🙂
Ashlee
I don’t, I’m sorry, but try Etsy, I allow others to use my patterns to sell items!
kayla Barkley
I’m fairly new to crochet. I’m mostly a knitter. I figured out how to do the magic ring, but I am confused at how to start the hat from there. Would be great if you would email me further instructions. Thank you. I love the bobblebearded hat want to make one for my 6 year old son and 1 year old daughter. 🙂
Ashlee
did you try these instructions – magic ring start – you start by doing row 1 into the loop.
kayla Barkley
I figured ot out. Thank you!
Ashlee
oh good! I usually only get to comments twice a month, so time sensitive stuff sometimes gets lost. I’m glad you figured it out.
lauren
Ok so I got the ring down, I know how to do the stitches, but every time I get to row 5 the hat starts curling and waving and is no longer making a dome shape…what am I doing wrong? I’ve pulled it loose and started over several times now and I just can’t seem to find my error. Is there one or will it all just even out? Please help I really love this pattern.
Ashlee
are you using the same yarn weight? if your yarn is thicker it will be really thick and curl. Or you might simply crochet tighter than I do. Try a thinner yarn, or larger hook and see if that helps.
Marcia Roberts
I’ve made the bobble beard and the beanie. Do you just attach the beard to the beanie with yarn and needle?
Ashlee
yes, I just use the same yarn as the brim of the beanie and sew the beard into the inside. Some people prefer buttons, or adding chains for wrapping around ears, but there is no right way, just whatever you prefer!
Marcia Roberts
Thank you so much! These are just too cute!
Ashlee
you are so welcome! I love how fast they whip up too!
susan
This picture is too cute. Makes you smile. Your so creative. Im going to make a few for my grandsons for christmas. Thank you for sharing this with us. I love it!!!
Thanks for all the diffrent sizes of patterns, we really appreciate all your hard work. Again thanks for sharing.
Ashlee
you are so welcome!!! I hope you enjoy making them and your grandson’s like them! Did you see the double loop santa hat? I think the beard on that would look great with a simple beanie as well!
Corinne
I love these and will be making them for my cousins, one of their babies, my brother and his baby for Christmas, but I have a question on yardage. I need to make three adult hats, two large beards (my brother already has an enormous beard of his own) and two x-small beards. I haven’t seen any yardage in your patterns, but it would really help me, as I have to order it and have it sent to France, so I can’t just go run to the store if I need more… Would be great to have just a rough estimate. Thank you!!
Ashlee
I’m so sorry, I’m not a professional, just play around and make things for my kids and then share them for others. So I don’t keep track of yardage at all. the vanna glamour I had one skein of each color (purple, gold and brown) and had plenty for all 6 I made, and for the other yarn, I have no clue, totally used scraps I’ll try to be better at keeping track in the future
Corinne
No worries, I understand. I looked up “how to crochet an adult beanie” and even there, it didn’t have any yardage info. So I’ll just get a couple skeins for the beards and a bunch more for the beanies! 🙂
Ashlee
I am SO sorry still, I was living overseas when I first started crocheting so I totally understand how frustrating that is! I hope it all works out for you!
Sarah
First of all, I want to say this is a great pattern and I’m super excited to try it out. I just have one question: Do you know the approximate ages for the different sizes? I’m doing them for three of my little cousins ages 4, 8, and 10. I’m not sure if I should do toddler or child for the 4-year-old and if I should do child or teen for the other two. Thanks a bunch!
Ashlee
that’s why I wrote the sizes I used for each child under their pictures so you could see the sizes on and try to judge. Seriously sizing is the WORST! Every child it SO different it’s so hard to judge. I prefer to work with my model close to try on. And sometimes I mixed sizes sometimes a small beard but medium hat. I’m so sorry I wish it was easier, but if I set a rule people get angry with me when it doesn’t fit! you can see more pictures on the beard pattern
Natalia
Hi Ashlee, thanks a lot for your efforts and great patterns. I’d like to suggest the way to specify the size. As it’s absolutely true that every child is different, the easiest way, I think, is to use the head circumference as a size: for just a beanie it’s enough to know the circumference taken against the forehead, and for a bobble bearded beanie I’d add the circumference from the chin through the vertex (I hope I’ve explained clearly, I’m Russian;))
Happy crocheting!
Marjorie
HI Ashlee,
I too have 5 children although they are now 29-39, same 10 year difference! Thanks for the wonderful patterns, I’m going to make one for my youngest grandson (19 mo) to help keep him warm this winter. The patterns are adorable and look easy to do. Thanks again for sharing.
Marjorie
Ashlee
It’s kind of crazy when I think that she’ll be 16 and driving when he’s starting kindergarten… but usually it’s just so much fun! I hope you enjoy the pattern and don’t have trouble making it!
Barbara O
Adorable! A young father-to-be saw this online and asked if I thought I could make one for his son with a beard that would match his own golden-red beard. Your pattern is so brilliantly written and easy to follow. The infant version turned out so well, I think I will make Dad his very own matching hat & beard. Perfect for those first father & son pictures. Thanks for sharing your handiwork!
Ashlee
you are so welcome! I’m so glad you thought it was easy to follow! I always worry about that as I just do this for fun!
Cherie
Thank you so much for the excellent beanie and beard patterns! I bought a pattern from Etsy that was awful and was going to give up the project. Then my sister found your site and patterns and I now have completed pieces. Thank you so much for writing easy to follow patterns and being willing to share them at no cost!
Cherie
Ashlee
yay! I love hearing that (not that another patter didn’t work, but that mine was easy to follow).
Cassie
I just love this hat! I am very new to crocheting and teaching myself with YouTube and info websites like this one. I have a question! How do you make a second row of the fphdc bpfdc connect to the first? I was having trouble discerning what post to go around for the second row. Thanks! And thanks for this website! 🙂
Ashlee
you are repeating the pattern, doing the fphdc in the previous fphdc, that’s what creates the ribbed look.
Maria
Hi there. I’m also struggling with this part. Do you mean that we continue to work around the posts of the first row?
Ashlee
yes, FPhdc in the previous FBhdc and BPhdc in the BPhdc all the way around
vivian
i’m stumped right out of the gate….the first round says to start with ch2 and then 8 hdd in ring for a total of 8 hdd? isn’t that 9 hdd when you include the first ch2? thx!
vivian
not hdd…HDC = half double crochet……
Ashlee
knew what you meant
Ashlee
I don’t count the ch 2. In fact no pattern does unless it specifically says “count the ch 2 as a hdc here and throughout”
PEACHES
Thanks so much for posting each size. It was very kind of you to take your time to write the patterns for us, the readers, and your followers.
The children in your photos are beautiful and handsome! The little blonde fellow is a born model!
You are obviously a talented photographer as well!
My adult son asked me to make him a tight fitting beanie to wear under his ballcap which he always wears. Your beanie pattern is perfect!
His sons asked Gramma to make them Bob Marley hats from their descriptions of how they wanted their individual hats to be! Well, 2 days ago Daddy brought them to pick up their hats and they were THRILLED with the way their hats turned out.
NOW, I will also have a BEARD to attach to their hats to further represent Bob Marley! They will get a real HOOT out of their BEARDS when I see them in a couple of days! THANK-YOU for giving me a terrific beard pattern that is PERFECT for these Bob Marley hats.
It’s not clear to me how these boys, at 10 and 11, have recently become interested in Bob Marley and wanting a hat like he wore but Bob Marley’s been a favorite Reggae singer of mine for years!
Thanks again and keep up the EXCELLENT, CREATIVE, INSPIRATIONAL DESIGNS and sharing them with us!
Ashlee
I’m so tickled that your son and grandsons all wanted crochet beanies! How totally fun that they have gotten into Bob Marley! Need to create a dreadlock hat now!

Hello there! Was wondering if you sell these?! If so, how much for each size! Would make awesome gifts!
Ashlee
I do not sell them, I’m so sorry, I simply don’t have the time. But I do allow people to use my patterns to make and sell items if you can find someone how does make and sell crochet items!
Sally
I just made the child size hat using Caron Simply Soft (4) yarn and an I (5.5mm) hook. It’s just a little bit big on my almost 5 year old, and actually fits me pretty well. (I would have added a row or two for length if it was for me.) I thought I’d post to give people an idea of how it turns out.
It’s not too big for my 5 year old to wear, and she’ll be able to wear it as she continues to grow! Beautiful hat and great pattern! Now I need to try a beard!
I am going to make one for my cousins son who is about a year old and will do the toddler hat, Caron Simply Soft, and try an H hook. I’d rather have it be too big. He’s across the sea, so I can’t try it on him first!
Ashlee
I agree, I’d always rather it be a bit too big, and it’s hard when they live father away, guessing is the worst! hope you loves it!
Amanda
I have a question. Someone has requested I make a beard beanie for their 10yr old boy. Would you suggest the child size or teen size beanie for the average 10yr old boy ?
Ashlee
GAH, I hate size questions cause every child/adult head is so so SO different and I never want to promise something and have people disappointed. I would choose to error on the side of too big, but 10… the teen could be way to big, or it might fit perfect! It’s also hard cause everyone crochet’s so differently (tight/loose/etc…)
Kristina
I love these hats, thank you so much for taking the time to write out the pattern for each size! I know that I tend to crochet tighter than the average hooker so I am a gauge checker! Do you have a gauge for the hats and maybe even the beards? Thank you in advance for the help!
Kristina
Oh I just found your gauge comment of 8HDC is about 2 inches on Ravelry Should have checked there before I asked Thank you though!
Ashlee
your so welcome! have fun making them!!!
Dian Soliman
Hi! Thank you for sharing this lovely pattern, your tutorial is easy to follow, very precise! I’m a stay at home mom who loves crochet and sometimes i sell at weekend flea markets with friends. May I have permission to sell finished products based on your pattern? I’ll put a link to your website on my product tag and of course mention it’s your pattern. May I also sell the finished product online, should I be able to get around to finally setting it up? Please please?
Ashlee
as long as you give me credit, link back to the post anywhere you sell (so that people who want to make their own can – and people who can make there own wouldn’t buy anyway so you don’t lose anything) and use your own images (so that clients can see YOUR work not mine)
Thingsfromstrings
I have searched for a good beanie and beard pattern……my search has ended :). Thank you so much for sharing and for making it “free”. I would like to make and sell these. I see from former posts that you are ok with that as long as i credit you with the pattern. I will sooooo give you the credit. Thanks again!
Ashlee
thanks so much! and make sure you also use your own pictures when selling, so that clients can see examples of your work. Good luck!
Rita Davies
I have crochet the loveley hat, but cant find the beard pattern. can you Help??
Ashlee
there is a link to the beard post right at the top of this post!
Anne B.
Thank you so much for sharing this pattern! You made it soooo much easier to pull off a last-minute Halloween costume for my son. His nickname for football was “Paul Bunyan”. :o)
Ashlee
looks amazing! I totally allow people to sell items made from my patterns, I just ask that you give me pattern credit and that you link to the post so that people who want to make their own can (and anyone who can make their own wouldn’t be a customer anyway so your not losing any orders)
Lynda Schnier
I love your beard hat design. I saw the photo of the beards in three sizes without the hat.
Can you please tell me the approximate length and width of each size beard?
I understand it will be different with various hooks and yarns, but what are the dimensions in the Vanna Glamour yarn and Size J hook as per your instructions?
Thanks!
Ashlee
honestly I never measured, I think even my own beards are different sizes every time I make them! the small is around 4 1/2 and the medium is about 5 1/2, I don’t have any extra small or large’s left to measure, I’m so sorry about that
sonia
great tutorial ! one question for ya!! where did you stitch the beard onto the hat? does it matter? thanks 😉
Ashlee
I tried the hat onto each child before sewing the beard into place so a little different for each child, just in front of center on each side, if that helps
Rozenn
Hi Ashley!
These are SO MUCH FUN! I’m making one for my 5 year-old nephew for Christmas 😀
Quick question…
The pattern ends with two or three rows of: “Ch1, *FPhdc in next st, BPhdc in next st* around, sl st to top of ch 2, fasten off weave in ends”
I’m a little perplexed what “ch2” refers to.
Do you start the first of those rows with ch 1, makes 30 x *FPhdc, BPhdc*,
then a ch 2 and a second (and third) row of 30 x *FPhdc, BPhdc*,
and end with a slip stitch on top of the ch 2 ?
Thanks you so much!
Ashlee
nope it is just a typo, it should say sl st on top of the ch 1, fixed it!
Dana
Hi – I need to make one of these for a 2 year old boy with a 14″ head. Can you tell me which on would be the most appropriate? Also for the beard that goes with it.
Thanks for these patterns!
Ashlee
honestly I recently moved and I don’t have access to any of my hats, ALSO it totally depends on how tight or loose you crochet! I can in NO WAY promise any sizing. for my year old I did a toddler size with a small beard. I’d do just the first 2 rows of the beard and measure it before finishing it
Rachel
Hi,
I just got into crochet and found your pattern on Pintrest. Love it! So adorable. I know that everyone crochets tighter/looser, but I was wondering aprox. how much yardage you use per hat with the yarn you listed and then I can figure out how much I should use with my gauge, yarn type, etc. Thanks!
Ashlee
I have no idea, I have about 5 twelve gallon buckets of yarn and I just use what I have. I can usually get 3 hats from a fresh ball, but if it’s been partially used then less. I just make something and share the pattern, I don’t really pay attention to this stuff (thus why it’s free)
Paula LeBlanc
Hi Ashley. I really like your beard and striped beanie patterns. Very well written, but I want you to know that a pop up comes on that says, “it may lead to inappropriate matter or spam”.
Thank you, Paula
Ashlee
I know, since I switched from imtopsyturvy.com to ashleemarie.com pinterest has marked some of my pin’s as spam. thx for letting me know I keep reporting it every time hoping to get it fixed.
Tiffany
I think I just found my new favorite beanie pattern!!! I love the quick work up and how nice it looks when complete. Thank you!!!
Ashlee
Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it and that it worked so well and quickly for you
Alison
I love this pattern! I will post a pic of my NEON version…. I had to slightly alter the pattern to fit my customer, but supper impressed with how easy and quickly it worked up! Now for the matching beards! Lol
Ashlee
looks great! thx for sharing with me, can’t wait to see the beard, is it also neon?
Brittany
Hi, I was wondering in you know the circumference of each hat. I’m going to be making one for a co-workers son (he’s going to be three) and I’m not sure if I should go with a toddler or a child hat.
Ashlee
Because everyone crochets so differently they always turn out different. I’d go with the childs hat, better to be a little too big than too small, the difference between child and toddler is very small. UNLESS you crochet large, then go with the toddler… GAH, no help at all, sorry!
brittany
I have more of a tighter tension usually so ill try the child. 🙂
Ashlee
sounds perfect! have fun!
Erin
Hi Ashlee, I know it’s been quite a while since you’ve made these hats, but I was wondering if you happened to know what color of Vanna glamour yarn you used on your niece’s stripes and beard in the photo sample of the baby beanie and extra small beard? I have had a customer request that specific color and just thought I would ask in case you knew. Thanks!
Ashlee
hers was the moonstone
Catherine
First, thank you so much for putting so much detail into this pattern and the bobble beard! I made my friends’ new baby one and she absolutely loved it. I actually put a button on the corner of the beard and a loop inside the hat so it could be worn with or without it. He looks so cute in it. I’m currently working on an extra large adult hat now. From a relatively new crochet-er, thank you again!
Ashlee
you are so welcome! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Ashley
These look so fun to make, and I’m so excited to give them a go! I was wondering if you could help me with how much yarn I would need? I’m planning on making an infant beanie with an extra small beard and a child beanie with a small beard. Thanks for your help!
Ashlee
I just used leftover yarn for each of these, they were all way less than a skein of yarn.
Rebecca
I just wanted to say Thank you for the free pattern. I was told at the last minute I needed Christmas presents for 3 extra boys. When I saw the pattern I thought it would be a great gift. Super easy to understand and read your patterns and worked up in just a few hours. Thanks again.
Ashlee
YAY! so glad you liked the pattern! hope the three boys liked their gifts!
rachel anna
Thank you for the pattern it is v ery simply written- especially if one is familiar with crochet terms, magic circle etc. you have been patient with these requests of how to, size questions, and so many redirects to the beard link.
Ashlee
awww thank you for saying so. I try to make sure to stop and help when I can. I’m glad you thought it was well written, sometimes I have to wonder!
Stacy N
Thank you so much for this pattern! I have used it for so many different projects!!!! It is my favorite go to pattern!
Ashlee
I’m so happy to hear that!
Kate
Hi! I really love the hat! But I have a question about the toddlers size, Row 1- Ch2, 8hdc in loop, What loop do you mean?
Ashlee
in the magic ring loops.
Jackie
Thanks so much for the hat pattern. I also made the bobble beard. My almost 3 yr old son laughed so hard when he saw him self in it. Thanks again!!
Maria
I love this pattern. For the child size beanie what size beard should I use?
Ashlee
depends on the child and how tight you crochet and the yarn your using. I suggest working through the first bobble layer of a small and measuring it against the child
Janet
Ashlee, I have made a couple hats and I noticed that the seam is not straight. Am I doing it wrong, or is this the way the seam is supposed to be? Many thanks!
Ashlee
that’s totally normal for in the round hats!
Petra
Hi! I was wondering. What circumference of head would the teen/adult size fit as compared to the extra large size? I am in the process of making a beanie and bobble beard for my husband and I would like it to be just right. I apologise if anyone has asked this question before me and I am merely making you repeat yourself.
Ashlee
it depends – on how you crochet (tight or loose) so my advice is always to try it on the person as you go and adjust as needed sometimes going up or down a hook size or even up or down a pattern size.
Paul Victor
For the toddler hat in row 2 does that ch 2 count in the 8 hdc or do I just skip it? And join with slip stich to the 1st hdc or the ch 2?
Ashlee
skip it – you never count chains as stitches unless the pattern specifically says to
Hannah
I love this pattern! I tend to use DK yarn for most projects – do you have a DK pattern at all or any recommendations of how I would make a hat like this with DK yarn?
thanks so much!
Ashlee
it depends on the yarn weight – even DK yarn has weight – as long as the weight fits the hook size your just fine – if it’s a LOT thicker and you need to move up a hook size just consider going down a hat size – or crocheting a little loser
Jennifer Thompson
How old is the baby in the pic. So I can get and idea of what size to use
Ashlee
she was 6 months old there – but she was like 20 lbs already thus it looking kinda tight
J. Cole
Thank you so much for this pattern! This is the first pattern I have ever used (and I have made a lot of things!) that has turned out to be the right size without adjustments. I can’t wait to get started on the beard! 🙂
Ashlee
YAY! we much crochet similar (same tightness level) glad it worked out!
Amy
Hi Ashlee,
I’m a little confused on the hook size, as when I used the 4 weight yarn and an I (5.5) hook which was listed in the material, and it was way too big also. You said in the materials that you used the Vanna Glamour for the hat as week, and an I hook, but isn’t that a 2 weight yarn? Could this be the difference?
Ashlee
everyone crochets differently – a little tight or a little loose – if you find that the size isn’t working out you can use a different pattern size or go down a hook size. I used the vanna glamour for the stripes – cause I also used them for the beards – yes they are different weights but it just changes the look, it totally works. If you changed hook size part way through that would cause issues. If you look at all the hats I made they are actually a TON of different yarn weights, but by using the same hook I just ended up with a tight/fat hat or a loose thin hat (or normal hat) but all about the same size.
Michelle S
I’m sure it was asked, I can’t find it. I completed both, not sure how to attach them. How do you ?
Ashlee Marie
I stich the beard to the inner ribs
Kimberly
Hi, I love this beanie and beard! I’m going to try making it after my husband requested it for him and my son. I was just wondering if the beanie would suit a larger mans head? He’s got a pretty big head 😁
Ashlee Marie
use the extra large sizes – my family has really heads too
Hannah
Bless you for writing a good crochet pattern that was so easy to follow. So many crochet patterns, especially free ones, have so many errors or are difficult to follow because of some assumptions they never really articulate. This was so easy to follow and my nephew looks PRECIOUS in the hat and beard.
Rachel
Hi Ashlee! Thanks for the pattern. I make these all the time for my friends’ kids and I especially love the hat pattern. I had a question about the sizes- what age range do you consider newborn, infant, and baby to be? Also, do you have a pattern or suggestion to size down for premies? Thanks!
Ashlee Marie
every baby is so different it’s hard to say I just try to fit to the baby
Tannis
Hello Ashlee, I love this! I wish I could send you a photo of my 2 month old grandson in his brown beard, and team colored beanie, just like his daddy’s! It’s so cute, everyone just cracks up when they see it.
Ashlee Marie
I bet it’s adorable
