Is there anything cuter than a baby with a beard? This easy crochet bobble beard pattern comes in every size from infant to adult.
I originally made a simple beard pattern as a white elephant gift, but it seemed so simple I wanted to make it look like it had more life. Then I decided to try making the beard with these bobbles and I’ll never go back to the simple beard again!
Since then I’ve added a double loop beard that is perfect for times you want to be even hairier, or santa!
To attache the beard I make this simple striped beanie pattern in 7 sizes from newborn to extra large adult.

Here is an example of all 4 beards, Large, Medium, Small and Extra Small (on an Adult, adult, toddler and baby beanies). You can see the difference in length as well as width (or is that height?) Which is why I’d suggest a hook change over beard size change if trying a different yarn.
And Baby Boy looked so cute I decided I had to add an even smaller version, here is Miss K showing off the Extra small!!! Seriously, could this BE any cuter?
I love the thinner yarn for more details, but if you’d rather use a thicker yarn try it out first, if it makes the beard too large try either going down a hook size or down a beard size.

Bobble Beard
Material:
vanna glamour (you can use any yarn of similar size, if you go up a yarn weight you might want to go down a beard size or down a hook size)
Hook I- 5.50mm
Stripped beanie
Stitches used:
chain (ch)
single crochet (sc)
half double crochet (hdc)
half double crochet decrease (hdc2tog)
bobble- Yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over once more and draw it through the first 2 loops on your hook.Repeat that process (yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over once more and draw it through the first 2 loops on your hook) 3 more times in the same stitch. There are now 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over and draw the loop through all 5 stitches. You’ve made one bobble stitch. Notice that the bobble puffs to the back side of the swatch you’re working, which will be the right side of the work.
Lego boy in a child’s beanie and medium beard, Computer boy in child’s beanie and Medium beard, Baby Boy in a toddler beanie and small beard (he was pulling on it, I swear it fits good) and Princess in a child’s beanie and small beard.
My mom is modeling the Large beard with Miss K… Love the zoolander look (seriously though, it’s a bit creepy on adult women without some fun face of some kind)

Sew row ends of beard to the inside edge of your favorite beanie, or my striped beanie, making sure it is spaced evenly between the two sides. I sewed mine about 1/2 inch up inside. I like the way it pulls and looks better than attaching RIGHT to the edge, gives you a bit of a lip. You can place the beards as far front or back as you want.

Love the pattern, so easy to follow I made one for my two year old son. Thanks for posting
Ashlee
thank you so much! I love hearing about successes, totally makes my day!

Do you have a pattern for the hat?
Thank you for sharing, they’re adorable.
Ashlee
Yes there are a few links in the post to the beanie pattern

I love these beanies with beard. It’s genius! In the Eurovision Song Contest a bearded woman won this year (I don’t know if your familiar with the Eurovision) and some of her/his fans were wearing crocheted beards. I want to make one for every member of my family! It’s perfect for the cold winters here in Sweden!
Ashlee
That is AWESOME that a bearded lady won! I hope you enjoy making these for your family members, it’s just getting cold here and I’m going to break these out again for the early mornings.
Deb G.
I love your directions and size options. I got 3 orders for these from one of my friends. Thanks for the pattern!
Ashlee
I’m so glad you like them! Please make sure to link to my posts an use your own pictures when selling items (so those who want to make their own can find the pattern – they wouldn’t be clients anyway)

these Patterns are fantastic thank you so much for sharing
Ashlee
you are so welcome! thank you so much for taking the time to comment!

I’m making these for my 3 nephews, (10,7,4). I bought medium 4 Caron simply soft yarn not knowing I needed a 2. What size hook is best to use with this thicker yarn? Should I use h or g.
Ashlee
remember that using a larger hook will make the size of the beard come out much larger, so you can use the smaller hook (it will still be bigger because of the yarn) or the larger hook but a smaller pattern. it might take some playing around to get the size right, but I usually do a few rows then measure them to see if I’m close.

HELLO ,
I’M HAVING TROUBLE WITH MAKING THE SMALL BEARD. ROW 2 I’M NOT GETTING 31 STITCHES. HOW MANY BOBBLE STITCHES ARE IN ROW 2?
Ashlee
row 2 has the same amt of stitches as row 1, it’s not an increase row there are 14 bobbles and 17 hdc’s – 31 stitches
Row 1- sc in second ch from hook and in each st across. 31 sc
Row 2- ch2, turn, hdc, *hdc, bobble stitch* repeat across, hdc twice 31 stitches

Hi Ashlee,
I have a question about the extra small beard. I had finished the beard and one side of it was longer then the other. Your pattern is so easy! The trouble I am having is row #2. Is the hdc and the bobble in the same stitch all the way across? I took the last beard I finished all the way back down to the first row of chains. I just want to make sure I do it right! Thanks so much!
Ashlee
there should only be 27 stitches in row 2, so 13 bobbles and 14 hdc’s, does that help?
Row 1- sc in second ch from hook and in each st across. 27 sc
Row 2- ch2, turn, *hdc, bobble stitch* repeat across, hdc 27 stitches
Jessica
Anyone have the finished lengths for the beards or at least a gauge? TiA:)
Ashlee
Sorry, it’s hard to do a gauge when every other stitch is a bobble! I get 6 stitches (3 bobbles, 3 hdc’s) in 2 inches, does that help?
Laura
Hi Ashlee,
I am in love with your beard beanies! I am new to crocheting, however, so I am having a hard time reading your pattern… Please help?
I am trying to make an extra small beard, but am stuck on row 4. I am making the bobbles, hdcs and hdc decreases, but I don’t understand what hdc 23 means.
Do I stitch 23 hdcs in the remaining spaces? Should I even be crocheting in the spaces?
Thanks!
Laura
Laura
Wait, are the hdcs and the bobbles in different stitches? Hmmmm…. Maybe that is my problem – I’ve been putting them together per stitch.
Ashlee
yes, they are in different stitches, in row 4 you should have 10 bobbles and 13 hdc’s
Ashlee
sorry, it was missing the parentheses, it should have read …hdc (23) meaning 23 stitches in that row. I fixed the pattern thank you so much
Mary
Thank you for this super easy pattern. You came to my rescue tonight when my daughter asked me to make a beard for my 6 month old grandson’s Halloween costume. I can’t wait to see what she’s dressing him up as!
Ashlee
YAY! I bet he looked adorable! the littler the model the cuter it looks!
Valerie
I am trying to make one of these for my husband, who has an enormous head (sorry, hon). I’ve crocheted and knitted for many years, and have always had trouble making hats big enough for him. I think he would need an extra large. Is there a general rule to how much you increase to make each size? I would appreciate any help – I’ve never been good at custom sizing!
Ashlee
are you asking about a bigger beard or beanie?
the beard I started with 4 more chains to the start and 2 extra rows
the beanie:
Row 9a- Ch2, *hdc in next 7 st, 2hdc in next st* around, sl st in top of first hdc. 72
Row 10- Ch2, hdc in each st, sl st in top of first hdc. 72

This pattern is simply brilliant. Simple, clever, easy. Thank YOU so much!
Ashlee
thank you so much! I am so glad you like it, it looks so fun on!
Meg Gardner
Which size would be best for a 10 year old?
Ashlee
That’s such a hard one to answer, it totally depends on the size of the child. Lego boy was almost 10 when he wore this one – a child’s beanie and medium beard
Jennifer
Thank you so much for sharing your pattern! I found it very easy to read and make. My first time to use the bobble stitch too! I made the extra small for a baby shower gift with a ‘camo’ beanie. My cousin wants to surprise her husband with a ‘red beard’ like his for their little man! Instead of sewing on I used 4 buttons to attach so if she decided to use the beanie w/o the beard she could. I wouldn’t want to use buttons on toddler age though as I would be concerned about them being a choking hazard. Again, thanks so much!!
Ashlee
I love the bobble stitch, it’s a such a fun texture! and I’m thrilled you’ve had so much success with the pattern!
Dottie
I just wanted to stop by and give you a great big THANK YOU for the awesome pattern. Crocheted up quick and easy and is so adorable! Great job!
Ashlee
you are so welcome! I’m so glad you like the pattern and glad it worked up quickly!

This pattern is great! It is so easy to follow. I consider myself a novice but I was able to whip up a hat and beard for my pastor who has alopecia in a matter of hours. I gave it to him this morning and he loved it so much he modeled it for the congregation before his sermon. My sister wants me to make one for her two 5 year old grandsons and my 11 year old daughter wants one. I plan to make one of each of the pastor’s three sons as well.
This is so much fun! Thanks for all your work in figuring out how to make them different sizes!
Ashlee
you are so welcome! and I’m glad that you enjoyed the pattern and that you have so many wonderful people to make them for!
Laurie L
I made the beards for my nephews and my daughter. They all love them. I made a beanie for each of the boys and sewed the beards on. I also made loops of 8-10 chain stitches on each side so they can loop them over their ears and wear the beards by themselves if they choose.
Thanks again!
Ashlee
sounds good! I’m so glad they liked them and that you enjoyed making them! thanks for leaving such a nice comment!

Dear Ashlee,
I just wanted you to know that I made the hat and bobble beard for a little boy who was undergoing cancer treatments last winter in Chicago. The hospital featured him on their home page for a week in the hat and beard. He loved them and is able to wear them again this year because I crocheted them in a larger size so he can grow into them. His grandmother said the hat and beard kept him warm and toasty. Am making eight more for a Christmas order. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Ashlee
you are so welcome! Please remember I’m fine with people selling items they make from my patterns, I just ask that whenever you share them (like anywhere you list them as something people can order, etc…) to link back to the pattern and give me credit, so that anyone who wants to make their own can find the pattern (and anyone who can make their own wouldn’t be clients anyway, so win win!)
cristiano rocha
love!!!
anyone tell me where can I buy this???
Cristiano
Ashlee
I suggest trying Etsy, I let people selling use my patterns, so if you find a seller whose work you like you can send them my pattern.
Michelle
Hello! Thanks for sharing your tutorial! So cute! Would a small work for an 8year old?
Thanks!
Michelle
Ashlee
it totally depends on the size of the child. My kids have all been totally different sizes at 8, I usually crochet the first 2 rows then measure it against the child to see if it’s fitting okay. Better to be a tad bit loose than too tight. That said in the picture my 8 yo (lego boy) is wearing a medium beard
