Is there anything cuter than a baby with a beard? This easy crochet bobble beard pattern comes in every size from infant to adult.

free pattern for crochet bobble beards, in 4 sizes

I originally made a simple beard pattern as a white elephant gift, but it seemed so simple I wanted to make it look like it had more life. Then I decided to try making the beard with these bobbles and I’ll never go back to the simple beard again!

Since then I’ve added a double loop beard that is perfect for times you want to be even hairier, or santa!

To attache the beard I make this simple striped beanie pattern in 7 sizes from newborn to extra large adult.

If you want to purchase all 5 patterns ad-free and printable at a discount click below.

Buy all 5 beard and beanie Ad-Free pattern pdf’s discounted here!

take the striped beanie and a bobble beard and you have bearded beanies, free pattern everyone loves

Here is an example of all 4 beards, Large, Medium, Small and Extra Small (on an Adult, adult, toddler and baby beanies).  You can see the difference in length as well as width (or is that height?) Which is why I’d suggest a hook change over beard size change if trying a different yarn.

free pattern for a crochet bobble beard to attach to your favorite beanie, extra small, small, medium and large linked to a free multi-sized beanie pattern

And Baby Boy looked so cute I decided I had to add an even smaller version, here is Miss K showing off the Extra small!!!   Seriously, could this BE any cuter?

I love the thinner yarn for more details, but if you’d rather use a thicker yarn try it out first, if it makes the beard too large try either going down a hook size or down a beard size.

Bobble Beard

Material:
vanna glamour (you can use any yarn of similar size, if you go up a yarn weight you might want to go down a beard size or down a hook size)
Hook I- 5.50mm
Stripped beanie

Stitches used:
chain (ch)
single crochet (sc)
half double crochet (hdc)
half double crochet decrease (hdc2tog)

bobble- Yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over once more and draw it through the first 2 loops on your hook.Repeat that process (yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over once more and draw it through the first 2 loops on your hook) 3 more times in the same stitch. There are now 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over and draw the loop through all 5 stitches. You’ve made one bobble stitch. Notice that the bobble puffs to the back side of the swatch you’re working, which will be the right side of the work.

Grandma, Grand baby and every age in between all rockin the crochet bearded beanies

Lego boy in a child’s beanie and medium beard, Computer boy in child’s beanie and Medium beard, Baby Boy in a toddler beanie and small beard (he was pulling on it, I swear it fits good) and Princess in a child’s beanie and small beard.

My mom is modeling the Large beard with Miss K…  Love the zoolander look (seriously though, it’s a bit creepy on adult women without some fun face of some kind)

you can see where I attached the beard in this picture, free crochet pattern

Sew row ends of beard to the inside edge of your favorite beanie, or my striped beanie, making sure it is spaced evenly between the two sides. I sewed mine about 1/2 inch up inside.  I like the way it pulls and looks better than attaching RIGHT to the edge, gives you a bit of a lip.  You can place the beards as far front or back as you want.

babies look sooo cute in bobble bearded beanies, free pattern

    Hi there,
My sister and her boyfriend are expecting a baby in September 2014.
They are huge beard lovers…. Beard jokes are always made each time we get together. (Her husband is Irish and has a huge beard and loves to talk about it. She enjoys the whole beard humor thing too.
I LOVE LOVE LOOOVE this idea, but I have zero talent/patience in to learn how to crochet.
I was wondering – Do you make these beanies and sell/ship them out?
If not – Would you make an exception? Please let me know as I have a pretty good idea as to what I want.

    Great website!
Hope to hear from you soon,

    Lisa

Thanks so much for letting my readers know! I’m thinking about adding a way for sellers to link on the pattern pages, would that be something that interested you?

sorry I am way too busy to handle orders. But check Etsy, there are always a few sellers using my patterns to make items. OR if you find a seller whose style you like you can ask them if they can make you one from my pattern.

I love this! I’m going to use it to make a Blackhawks playoffs beard hat. This is so much fun. I’m also loving the Print option. Makes it so easy to take this pattern with me.

I’m so sorry to hear that, I haven’t had anyone else have this issue. Everyone crochet’s so differently, tight, loose, etc… so it’s hard to give exact measurements and expectations. This is just the sizes that worked for me. Also I’m sorry it took so long, these usually only take me an hour or two. What I suggest doing for the beard is to crochet the chain then the first row and measure it against your childs head before moving on.

Oh my gosh I just love this so much. I just made an extra small one for my new born. Unfortunately she has a teensy head so it’s a bit big but it’ll be perfect for when the weather starts getting colder. Thank you <3

I also want to know if you sell these beanies?

    • Ashlee

      July 26, 2014 at 2:31 am

I don’t. You are more than welcome to pass this URL on to anyone you know that might be able to make them for you. Or try ETSY to find a seller there already making them, or that look like they do good enough work that you’d like to ask them to make these for you (I just ask that they link to my post in their listings)

    • Ashlee

      July 26, 2014 at 2:12 am

I do not, but I know a lot of sellers on ETSY use my pattern to sell items so I would check there!

hey i want to know if the bobble is like the puff stitch

    Reply
    • Ashlee

      July 26, 2014 at 2:21 am

it’s similar (since they booth puff out) but different. the bobble stitch is more secure and sticks out better. The puff can be deflated, and if you pull one strand it will cause a ton of problems, so I don’t usually use it.

If you are not selling the finished product, is there somebody on the comments list who could make one of these for me?

I can machine complex mechanical parts, weld metals, build computers and restore cars; but crochet is out of my league….:-)

You might be surprised, if you can weld and handle complex parts you’d probably rock at crochet! My Brother in law not only crochets, but knits as well, and really well! (he rebuilds motors and builds houses too). I do NOT sell these, I’d suggest trying ETSY, it’s a great place to find handmade items like these and I totally allow people to use my patterns for selling as long as they link to my URL in their listing!

These are super cute. But I am finding it hard to follow along (I’m a beginner..just started a few days ago lol) My bobbles just seem too far spaced out. ( I’ve been trying the size small )Is it just one hdc between each bobble? Thanks 🙂

    Reply
    • Ashlee

      July 26, 2014 at 2:37 am

yes there is an hdc between each bobble. You might simply not be crocheting tight enough (also this is a thinner yarn so it is a more loose feel) try going down a hook size and see if your happy with it
