Is there anything cuter than a baby with a beard? This easy crochet bobble beard pattern comes in every size from infant to adult.

I originally made a simple beard pattern as a white elephant gift, but it seemed so simple I wanted to make it look like it had more life. Then I decided to try making the beard with these bobbles and I’ll never go back to the simple beard again!
Since then I’ve added a double loop beard that is perfect for times you want to be even hairier, or santa!
To attache the beard I make this simple striped beanie pattern in 7 sizes from newborn to extra large adult.

Here is an example of all 4 beards, Large, Medium, Small and Extra Small (on an Adult, adult, toddler and baby beanies). You can see the difference in length as well as width (or is that height?) Which is why I’d suggest a hook change over beard size change if trying a different yarn.

And Baby Boy looked so cute I decided I had to add an even smaller version, here is Miss K showing off the Extra small!!! Seriously, could this BE any cuter?
I love the thinner yarn for more details, but if you’d rather use a thicker yarn try it out first, if it makes the beard too large try either going down a hook size or down a beard size.

Bobble Beard
Material:
vanna glamour (you can use any yarn of similar size, if you go up a yarn weight you might want to go down a beard size or down a hook size)
Hook I- 5.50mm
Stripped beanie
Stitches used:
chain (ch)
single crochet (sc)
half double crochet (hdc)
half double crochet decrease (hdc2tog)
bobble- Yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over once more and draw it through the first 2 loops on your hook.Repeat that process (yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over once more and draw it through the first 2 loops on your hook) 3 more times in the same stitch. There are now 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over and draw the loop through all 5 stitches. You’ve made one bobble stitch. Notice that the bobble puffs to the back side of the swatch you’re working, which will be the right side of the work.

Lego boy in a child’s beanie and medium beard, Computer boy in child’s beanie and Medium beard, Baby Boy in a toddler beanie and small beard (he was pulling on it, I swear it fits good) and Princess in a child’s beanie and small beard.
My mom is modeling the Large beard with Miss K… Love the zoolander look (seriously though, it’s a bit creepy on adult women without some fun face of some kind)

Sew row ends of beard to the inside edge of your favorite beanie, or my striped beanie, making sure it is spaced evenly between the two sides. I sewed mine about 1/2 inch up inside. I like the way it pulls and looks better than attaching RIGHT to the edge, gives you a bit of a lip. You can place the beards as far front or back as you want.

I was wondering how far back I should go with the beard on the hat. I am making this as a gift so I don’t have the child here to make adjustments. If I laid the hat on its side would it be best to sew it at about the half way mark? Thanks
Ashlee
That’s a tough one, because looking at the ones i made for my kid’s they are different for each but the half way mark is probably a good guess, maybe a bit too far back, I’d go slightly more forward, just because it can be difficult to get the bearded beanie on if it’s too far back.

Dear Ashlee,
I am having trouble on row 10 of the medium size. I have 31 stitches and have done the first set of hdc, bobble 5 times. That is ten stitches. I then chained 7, If I skip 9 more stitches, and then hdc, bobble 5 times and hdc at the end, I won’t have enough stitches. What am I missing?
Thanks so much for your help. I am making this for my 11 year old grandson.

Sorry for bothering you, Ashlee. As soon as I sent the email and went back to the pattern, I figured it out. Duh! Finished the beard last night.
Ashlee
YAY! I’m so glad, I only answer comments once a month so i’m so glad you were able to figure it out!
Ashlee
so we ended row 9 with 31 stitches
Row 10- ch2, turn, *hdc, bobble* 5 times, (1-10th stitches)
hdc, (11th stitch – I think this is the one your missing?)
ch7 skip 9 st, (skipping 12-20)
*hdc, bobble* 5 times, (21-30th stitches)
hdc (31st stitch)
does that help? Sometimes it just takes “seeing” the row differently so I can count it out.

I did not sew the beards to the beanies. I put a loop on each side so they go over the ears. That way, they can be worn with any hat, any weight, etc. Made them for three grandkids and they live in different climates, etc.
Thanks for the patterns. They are so cute
Ashlee
you are so welcome! i hope they loved them!
Amy
Love, love, love it!! Made the beard and attached it to a hat I had already made. It’s so adorable!! Can see it on my Facebook page. Made my little man in it my profile picture.

awwww! totally adorable!!! what a cutie pie!

A client sent me the pattern asking me to make this for her, but I have to order the yarn online as she wants alpaca. Due to the costs I would rather not have to buy too much. Can you give me an approximate yardage used for the beard parts for a size small and a ladies? Thanks would really appreciate it.
Ashlee
I am so sorry, I just make these up for fun, I don’t take the time to measure anything. the vanna’s glamour I used is a very thin yarn and very small ball, not as big as traditional rolls. And I got quite a few beards out of each roll, it really didn’t take very much at all. I am so sorry I can’t be more help. I’ll try to remember to pay attention to that in the future.
ashley
These are WONDERFUL! I just made one for my cousin for her baby shower. Thank you soooo much for sharing!
Ashlee
you are so welcome! Did she love it?
Ashley
Her shower is at the end of this month so I haven’t given it to her yet. But I know she’s going to love it! She saw a pic of one a while ago and has been begging me to make her one. I told her I didn’t know the stitch used to make them and that it was beyond my level of expertise 😉 won’t she be surprised. I’ll let you know how it goes over but I have a feeling I’ll be making one for her to wear too.
Ashlee
YAY! I hope she LOVED it!

I just finished the medium size bead and found that my count seemed to be off right from the beginning. When you turn, do you start the next stitch in the turn stitch or the stick next to it?
Also, my bobbles are not nearly as round, pronounced as yours are. I the trick to pull the hdc a little tighter? Over all it’s ok, but I would like to get it right 🙂
thanks for the great idea and all the help <3
Ashlee
I don’t work in the ch2, just in the stitches. if a pattern wants you to work in the ch2 it will say “ch2 (this counts as a stitch here and throughout” if it doesn’t say that then you don’t work in it. Does that help? as for the bobble make sure all the half stitches are even on your hook before you do the last stitch pull through and pull that one tigher? does that make sense?
Gabrielle
Hello Ashlee!
I’m a beginner and having a little trouble understanding the pattern. In row 2 it shows “*hdc, bobble stitch repeat” and he m just confused if that means I do the two hdc, bobble stitch, hdc, bobble stitch, etc? Can you please explain?
Thank you!
Ashlee
yes, you repeat the section between the ** across. If your just supposed to repeat just one stitch it won’t have those **, that shows the grouping your supposed to repeat. does that help?

I was so happy to find this pattern! Just in time for our winter blast. Your pattern is very easy to follow and thank yu for that.
Ashlee
you are so welcome! I ‘m so glad you like it! I hope it helps keep you warm, it is WAY too cold right now!
Irma
I haven’t’ tried your pattern out yet, but I made a different beard hat for a client for Christmas. I was worried about the problem of the man being able to get the beard over his head, so I decided to sew velcro strips on both sides of the hat and the beard. I used the soft side of the velcro on the hat and the “grabber” side of the velcro on the beard. The man who received the hat was very pleased.
Ashlee
great idea! My kids just lose things too easily so attached is the only way to go for us! glad you found what worked for you!
Shyla Taylor
What hat pattern did you use? I have grand kids in Iowa and these will be adorable and practical in this years wild winter! Thank you so much for sharing your talent.
Ashlee
I link to my striped beanie pattern at the beginning of the post, but you can use any beanie you like
Kelley
Thank you for this pattern. I’ve tried others and the patterns weren’t easy to follow. I love the shape of these beards. I chain 20 at the last stitch, then attach the chain to the very first row. Then attach yarn on the opposite side, first row, chain 20 and attach to beginning of the last row to make loops that go around the ears to hold the beard in place. Use less chains for smaller beards.
Ashlee
sounds good! my kids would lose them so attaching them is what’s best for us, but I know a lot of people like them to be separate so thanks for sharing!

Ashlee I just wanted to say thank you for the pattern it is so cute! I really appreciate it. My grandson is wanting one so badly!!
Ashlee
you are so welcome! I hope he loves it, these are so cute on kids!
Roselyn
Love the pattern! I just finished my second beard. First was for my grandson and his mom says he loves it! Now my son gets a gray beard because he hates the idea of getting older and gray hair. LOL.
Thanks for the cool patterns!
Ashlee
love the idea of doing it in grey!!!! i hope your son loves it as much as your grandson!
Sarah
Love the pattern but a little confused. Trying to make an extra small and I’m not understanding row 4. If you could explain this just a little more I would appreciate it. Thank you
Ashlee
I’m sorry, but I need a bit more information, what about row 4 are you having trouble with?
Meadhbh
Hi, I’m also confused with Row 4!
Row 4- ch2, turn, hdc, *hdc, bobble stitch repeat across, hdc, hdc 35 stitches
Do you mean hdc, then repeat (hdc, bobble, hdc, hdc) across the rest of the row?
Thanks!
Ashlee
what size are you working in, it’s hard to answer when each pattern has a different row 4. But I believe your working on the medium one. When you have a portion between astriks ** and then it says repeat x number of times or repeat across oyu do JUST the portion in the astriks. So in this case you do the hdc, then do an hdc/bobble that you reapeat across and end with hdc, hdc.
Row 4- ch2, turn, hdc, *hdc, bobble stitch* repeat across, hdc, hdc 35 stitches
Sara

Thank you!
Ashlee

I just made one of the beard hats for a 4 month old and it turned out great! I made the baby beanie and x-small beard and it fit him perfectly. I’m going to be making some more and one of the little boys is almost 3. I’m wondering if you have a suggestion for the sizes I should use. I was also wondering how old Baby Boy is in the picture you posted of him with the other children. Thanks so much for sharing the patterns for the beanie and beard! They are AWESOME!
Ashlee
in these pictures my baby niece is 6 months, baby boy is 1, the other kids are 5,7,9,11 I’m glad you like them!

I LOVE this pattern. I’ve made a few of the baby sized beard hats as gifts. I’m also doing a give away with a bearded hat and linked to your site so fellow crocheters can find your pattern 🙂
