Is there anything cuter than a baby with a beard? This easy crochet bobble beard pattern comes in every size from infant to adult.

free pattern for crochet bobble beards, in 4 sizes

I originally made a simple beard pattern as a white elephant gift, but it seemed so simple I wanted to make it look like it had more life. Then I decided to try making the beard with these bobbles and I’ll never go back to the simple beard again!

Since then I’ve added a double loop beard that is perfect for times you want to be even hairier, or santa!

To attache the beard I make this simple striped beanie pattern in 7 sizes from newborn to extra large adult.

If you want to purchase all 5 patterns ad-free and printable at a discount click below.

Buy all 5 beard and beanie Ad-Free pattern pdf’s discounted here!

take the striped beanie and a bobble beard and you have bearded beanies, free pattern everyone loves

Here is an example of all 4 beards, Large, Medium, Small and Extra Small (on an Adult, adult, toddler and baby beanies).  You can see the difference in length as well as width (or is that height?) Which is why I’d suggest a hook change over beard size change if trying a different yarn.

free pattern for a crochet bobble beard to attach to your favorite beanie, extra small, small, medium and large linked to a free multi-sized beanie pattern

And Baby Boy looked so cute I decided I had to add an even smaller version, here is Miss K showing off the Extra small!!!   Seriously, could this BE any cuter?

I love the thinner yarn for more details, but if you’d rather use a thicker yarn try it out first, if it makes the beard too large try either going down a hook size or down a beard size.

Bobble Beard

Material:
vanna glamour (you can use any yarn of similar size, if you go up a yarn weight you might want to go down a beard size or down a hook size)
Hook I- 5.50mm
Stripped beanie

Stitches used:
chain (ch)
single crochet (sc)
half double crochet (hdc)
half double crochet decrease (hdc2tog)

bobble- Yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over once more and draw it through the first 2 loops on your hook.Repeat that process (yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over once more and draw it through the first 2 loops on your hook) 3 more times in the same stitch. There are now 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over and draw the loop through all 5 stitches. You’ve made one bobble stitch. Notice that the bobble puffs to the back side of the swatch you’re working, which will be the right side of the work.

Grandma, Grand baby and every age in between all rockin the crochet bearded beanies

Lego boy in a child’s beanie and medium beard, Computer boy in child’s beanie and Medium beard, Baby Boy in a toddler beanie and small beard (he was pulling on it, I swear it fits good) and Princess in a child’s beanie and small beard.

My mom is modeling the Large beard with Miss K…  Love the zoolander look (seriously though, it’s a bit creepy on adult women without some fun face of some kind)

you can see where I attached the beard in this picture, free crochet pattern

Sew row ends of beard to the inside edge of your favorite beanie, or my striped beanie, making sure it is spaced evenly between the two sides. I sewed mine about 1/2 inch up inside.  I like the way it pulls and looks better than attaching RIGHT to the edge, gives you a bit of a lip.  You can place the beards as far front or back as you want.

Thanks so much for this pattern! I made the newborn beanie and started on the beard for the little boy we are expecting in the fall. The beard ended up huge, but I think it was the strange yarn I was using. That just means the whole family is getting beards now!

    Thank You!!

Yes, I made these beards with a very thin yarn, the vanna glamour yarns is crazy thin. Try using thiner yarn and if that still ends up to big go down a hook size maybe? Plus everyone crochets a bit differently, some tight, some loose, etc… so it usually takes a bit of adjustment, at least for me it does!

I do!! I use the same yarn as the beanie, and sew it to the inner ribbing so it doesn’t show up at all! Works great.

I don’t do video’s, they would take SO much time, and be such long videos I’m not sure how crochet video makers do it! I’ll work on it though, Any suggestions of favorite crochet youtubers I should watch to get some ideas from?

Naztazia is among the more detailed v-crocheters, but there are a whole lot of people who will just video record their work and then snip small pieces together 🙂 I wouldn’t want you to go out of your way – I just love to see the techniques in action because I tend to memorize new patterns faster if I associate audio/visual with the instructions 🙂

Its on “the list” to attempt, but “the list” is about 5 pages long at this point, seriously I think I add two items for every one I check off at this point. But I’ll try to get on it, thanks for the suggestion, I’ll look for her stuff.

Having a hard time figuring out what stiches count as one and which count as two. Is it hdc2tog, and then bobble in the next stitch. Nothing that states “in next stitch” or “in same stitch”. So my count is constantly off 🙁

I’m sorry your having trouble with this. if it doesn’t say “in the same stitch” that imply’s that it’s “in the next stitch”. I don’t bother saying it because it would make the pattern so long and so repetitive. And a bobble is one stitch, a hdc is one and a hdc2tog is one (it’s a decrease, your stitching 2 together into one), does that help?

Can someone please explain the bobble decrease stitch to me? hdc2tog??? I know how to decrease a normal stitch but the hdc2tog I haven’t a clue!!! Help

hdc2tog is just a simple decrease stitch, decreasing two hdc’s together, nothing to do with the bobble at all. here is an easy tutorial on it http://www.stitchdiva.com/tutorials/crochet/working-stitches-together

I’m having a lot of fun making the beards. Thank you for an awesome pattern…and free to boot! I just had one question regarding the chain/skip for the mouth opening and the subsequent bobbles into the chain. So far I’ve made the medium and extra small but I can’t get the number of bobbles into the chain as the pattern says. For example, on the extra small beard, you have it written to chain 5 and skip 7 stitches. But you want to *bobble, sc* three times plus one more bobble which is a total of 7 stitches into a chain of 5. Should I have chained 7 and skipped 5 stitches instead? I was only able to get 3sc & 2 bobbles on the ‘mustache’ chain. That row was 8 sc, *bobble, sc*2 times, 8sc. Don’t get me wrong it results look awesome but I see in your photo of the adorable baby in the extra small beard, you have 4 bobbles in the mustache.

Apologies if this was already answered above. I didn’t read through all the comments. Thank you in advance for addressing my question. I’ve only started crocheting 6 months ago.

I don’t work the mustache in the chains themselves, but in the SPACE, that way I can keep the mustache tight over the lip but also super full (and even) with the etra bobbles. does that help?

when it is in **——-** what does that mean? For example- Row 2- ch2, turn, *hdc, bobble stitch* repeat across, hdc 27 stitches

do we do a hdc and bobble stitch in one stitch? and do that across the entire row? and then one hdc in the very last stitch

no, you don’t do both in one stitch, it’s just so you know what stitches to repeat. sometimes patterns will have a beginning section, then a *-* repeat section, then more non repeat stuff. That row happens to be all repeat.

Thanks again for the awesome pattern as well as your help above.

I wanted to share something that really increases the wearing comfort of the beards, especially if you aren’t using the softest yarn, which is the case for one I made for a friend who is stationed in the Middle East. I used a wire slicker brush (think pet cat brush) to make the inside (part that touches the face) of the beard softer. The fine wires snag the yarn as you brush it across making it fluffy. I was afraid it might feel itchy but it’s quite lovely.

I have made three beards from your awesome patterns. Thank you sooooo much. We’ll do a family beard picture for our Christmas card this year. It goes so quick I might even have time to make some for the Grands.

For anyone reading – my giantess 9yo daughter is rockin’ the size S; size M would have worked too; one of my 4yo twins is comfy/cozy in the size S, but I’ll probably do an XS for the other twin and the 2.5yo.

Also, I crocheted ear “hooks” so that I wouldn’t have to worry about attaching them to hats. Works great!

    Anyway thank you thank you!

I love this pattern and I am planning on making one for my son and his dad. I am not sure that the large will be big enough for his dad. Could you suggest a way to make it bigger…like an xl? It seems to go up 4 chains for each size….do you think if I went up to 44 chains it would work ok?
    Thanks Again!

You can totally try that. I’d make a beanie first (any beanie will work) and then do the first row, then wrap it around his face to see if it’s a good fit, but not too tight or it’s hard to get over your head. My husband has a pretty large head and face and the large fit him, but it is a tight fit to first get it on, but if its too loose it doesn’t look right on.

I used a puff stitch for this pattern that I found on a website. It may be different from a babble but it still achieves the same puffed out effect. I yarned over until I had 9 loops on the hook for the stitch. This website has an illustration that really helped me: https://rensfibreart.wordpress.com/handy-crochet-tips-tricks-2/stitch-overview/
