Raise your hand if you’ve seen the new LEGO Batman movie??? Seriously it was SO cute! We obviously loved it as we threw a Lego Batman birthday party just 4 days later! I am SO excited to share with you this Lego Batman Cake Tutorial! I’ve done a Lego figure cake before – this Lego Anakin Skywalker – but he was sitter – this was SO MUCH MORE FUN!
I did so many first’s with this cake – first time where I had to work my cake AROUND a structure – in the past I’ve just built as I’ve gone – but this one needed to be more sturdy and precise so built it was. AND my first time using LIGHTS in my cake! How much more AMAZING would Gruff have been if I’d known about these lights 2 years ago? I see using these lights again and AGAIN in future cakes!
So the full tutorial is in the video so I didn’t bother to take pictures but I wanted to list for your convenience the tools I used for this one! (AND share my modeling chocolate recipe)
Tools
- 3/4 inch MDF board
- 21 inches of a 5/8 inch threaded rod
- 8 nuts (for the 5/8 inch rod) – you can also get washers and locking washers but honestly the nuts are good enough
- 1/4 inch copper tubing
- 1/4 inch tube cutter
- 5/8 inch drill bit
- something to cut the board – I used a jig saw
- 4 two inch tall 8″x8″ square dense cakes
- 3 two inch tall 6″ round dense cakes
- chocolate ganache
- black modeling chocolate (I used 10 lbs of chocolate)
- sharp serrated knife
- yellow fondant
- black fondant
- white food coloring
- fondant sugar shaper tools
- LED lights with remote
- black paper
- Lego character images printed out
LEGO Batman Cake - Modeling Chocolate
Ingredients
Using real chocolate
- 1 lbs Black dark chocolate wafers
- 1/2 C light corn syrup
Using Candy Melts
- 1 lbs black candy melts
- 1/3 C light corn syrup
Instructions
- melt the chocolate in a double broiler or in the microwave - don't over heat - you don't want chunks but you don't want it to burn either
- warm the corn syrup then add to the chocolate - stir until fully incorporated - but don't OVER stir - if it separates it's hard to bring it back together - I stir until it get's thick then I stop
- lay out some plastic wrap and pour the modeling chocolate into it - wrap it up really good - but be careful not to get the plastic embedded in the chocolate (it will be hard to pull out once it hardens)
- let sit over night!
- the next day take a piece at a time and knead it - it will warm and soften in your hands

For any cake that is recreating a well known image it’s all about the details – the hand painted abs, the space between the legs, the prominent eyebrows, utility belt, etc.. are what make this cake really excite people! it doesn’t have to be perfect but hitting the right points will take it from “nice” to “AMAZING!”
Jeanine Lynch
I am wondering if you got permission from them to use their name… and teach how to recreate an image of their product…. Copyright infringement can be very serious.

I’ve talked to Lego many times and as long as i’m not creating actual lego’s they don’t care. As for DC comics as long you don’t sell the cakes your okay. I just make them for my kids and offer the tutorial for free so they don’t mind either. but I would never make this cake for sale or for a client for that reason

Hi! Thank you for this tutorial!! I want to make a similar cake and I have a couple of questions… (1) how many servings would you say you got out of this cake?, and (2) do you think it would look too small/be cumbersome to assemble or cut if I scale it back using 6″ square cakes and 4″ round cakes instead of the 8″ and 6″ you are using so the whole thing is around 16″ tall? I only need about 36 servings (and half of those are for kids) so I would like to avoid having a huge amount of cake left. Thanks in advance!!

Holy Batman!! 😉 Amazing cake!

Hi there, I came across the batman lego cake and I am going to attempt it for my nephews 5th birthday in 1 month. I was wondering, Have you shared your blueprint at all for us to use as well? I am not good with that kind of thing. Thankyou.
Maria
Stacey, I am attempting this cake this week. How did yours turn out?
Amy
You’re Amazing!!! I would love to try this! Thank you for sharing I’ll definitely tag you! How much chocolate was used for the modeling chocolate? It says 10lbs on the regular recipe but 5lbs in the notes in the modeling chocolate
Ashlee Marie
I made 10 lbs but only used about half
Heather
Hi Ashlee! I’m making your Lego Batman in two weeks – my first standing cake and use of modeling chocolate – eek! I’m wondering what brand of chocolate wafers you use for your modeling chocolate? I can’t find anything other than candy melts in my area. Thank you!!
Ashlee Marie
I used merkens but candy melts work just fine
Katelyn
How did you end up storing this until it was time for the party?
Ashlee
I finished it about 5 mins before the party started. But the ganache/fondant/modeling chocolate keeps the cake totally encased and moist so you don’t have to store it any special way, the counter is just fine.

Hi, Ashlee! I found your fabulous cake tutorial while searching for ideas for a standing cake. My grandson has requested a Lego minifig for his 6th birthday next month, and your tutorial has given me the courage to try it. I am a self taught decorator, and I have never attempted anything like this. Could you tell me what brand of paint you used to coat the board and the metal in the framework? Thank you.
Ashlee Marie
I just went to the hardware store and asked for a small non toxic paint and they suggested one.
