Eggnog is always a favorite this time of year – and not just to drink! I use eggnog to make this amazing syrup and delicious french toast and it’s become a breakfast favorite.
How I created this french toast recipe
Two years ago I did a live stream video making my homemade eggnog (which is amazing by the way) and at the end I asked people if there were any eggnog recipes they would like to see.
Among the suggestions was eggnog cheesecake (that recipe is coming soon) and eggnog french toast! I use the eggnog I made that night for french toast for dinner!
It was delicious and quickly became a breakfast for dinner favorite at our house. And the icing on the cake is the easy to make eggnog syrup (which is based on my fan favorite buttermilk syrup)
Just take me to the french toast already!

Tips for Making the Perfect french toast
– What bread do you use for french toast? ANY, I Like to use my homemade cinnamon swirl bread cut into thick slices 3/4 to 1 inch is my preference. Avoid bread that is too light or too thin. You want it dense enough that it won’t get too soggy when you soak it. I also like Challah, Brioche, or even Croissants.
– Should you use fresh bread? For a crunchy outside and custardy inside you want bread that is a little dry. French toast originally was made with old stale bread, but old bread is lacking in flavor. I like making fresh bread then cutting thick slices and letting them dry on a cooling rack (for even drying) overnight or drying the slices in the oven at 300 for 6-8 mins.
– Should you use whole eggs or just yolks? There are arguments for both here. The yolks have more fat which will give you a richer flavor. And I never recommend low fat milks.
– What is the milk to egg ratio? To much egg and you get scrambled eggs, too much milk and it soaks too much and doesn’t set. I recommend 1/4 C milk for each egg (or two yolks) – and this is good for 2 slices. And I never recommend using low-fat dairy.
– Use powdered sugar instead of granulated sugar – it will dissolve better and more evenly. The granulated sugar tends to sink to the bottom and has to constantly be re-stirred.
– How long do you soak the bread? If your bread is fresh soak for less time as it can’t absorb the custard as well or you’ll have mushy bread vs custardy.
– Preheat the griddle or pan – you want it nice and hot before you start. Spray with a thin layer or non-stick spray or oil. You can add some butter on top of the non stick layer right before adding the slice for flavor. You don’t want to use just butter as butter has a low burn point and the butter will burn and effect the flavor.

- favorite eggnog – I use my homemade eggnog recipe but use whatever eggnog you like best – I recommend higher fat for a better french toast
