Is there anything cuter than a baby with a beard? This easy crochet bobble beard pattern comes in every size from infant to adult.

free pattern for crochet bobble beards, in 4 sizes

I originally made a simple beard pattern as a white elephant gift, but it seemed so simple I wanted to make it look like it had more life. Then I decided to try making the beard with these bobbles and I’ll never go back to the simple beard again!

Since then I’ve added a double loop beard that is perfect for times you want to be even hairier, or santa!

To attache the beard I make this simple striped beanie pattern in 7 sizes from newborn to extra large adult.

If you want to purchase all 5 patterns ad-free and printable at a discount click below.

Buy all 5 beard and beanie Ad-Free pattern pdf’s discounted here!

take the striped beanie and a bobble beard and you have bearded beanies, free pattern everyone loves

Here is an example of all 4 beards, Large, Medium, Small and Extra Small (on an Adult, adult, toddler and baby beanies).  You can see the difference in length as well as width (or is that height?) Which is why I’d suggest a hook change over beard size change if trying a different yarn.

free pattern for a crochet bobble beard to attach to your favorite beanie, extra small, small, medium and large linked to a free multi-sized beanie pattern

And Baby Boy looked so cute I decided I had to add an even smaller version, here is Miss K showing off the Extra small!!!   Seriously, could this BE any cuter?

I love the thinner yarn for more details, but if you’d rather use a thicker yarn try it out first, if it makes the beard too large try either going down a hook size or down a beard size.

Bobble Beard

Material:
vanna glamour (you can use any yarn of similar size, if you go up a yarn weight you might want to go down a beard size or down a hook size)
Hook I- 5.50mm
Stripped beanie

Stitches used:
chain (ch)
single crochet (sc)
half double crochet (hdc)
half double crochet decrease (hdc2tog)

bobble- Yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over once more and draw it through the first 2 loops on your hook.Repeat that process (yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over once more and draw it through the first 2 loops on your hook) 3 more times in the same stitch. There are now 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over and draw the loop through all 5 stitches. You’ve made one bobble stitch. Notice that the bobble puffs to the back side of the swatch you’re working, which will be the right side of the work.

Grandma, Grand baby and every age in between all rockin the crochet bearded beanies

Lego boy in a child’s beanie and medium beard, Computer boy in child’s beanie and Medium beard, Baby Boy in a toddler beanie and small beard (he was pulling on it, I swear it fits good) and Princess in a child’s beanie and small beard.

My mom is modeling the Large beard with Miss K…  Love the zoolander look (seriously though, it’s a bit creepy on adult women without some fun face of some kind)

you can see where I attached the beard in this picture, free crochet pattern

Sew row ends of beard to the inside edge of your favorite beanie, or my striped beanie, making sure it is spaced evenly between the two sides. I sewed mine about 1/2 inch up inside.  I like the way it pulls and looks better than attaching RIGHT to the edge, gives you a bit of a lip.  You can place the beards as far front or back as you want.

babies look sooo cute in bobble bearded beanies, free pattern

Yes, sorry. I’m trying the large beard. All my bobble numbers are correct for the other rows. I’ve got 39 in row 9. Ugh, Thx for the help, I’ll try again tomorrow!

Here are where each stitch should be (let me know if this helps):

      Row 10- ch2, turn, hdc, (stitch 1)
*hdc, bobble stitch* 6 times, (stitches 2-13)
*hdc2tog, bobble* two times, (decrease in stitches 14/15, bobble in 16, decrease in stitches 17/18, bobble in 19)
      hdc, (stitch 20)
*bobble, hdc2tog* two times, (decrease in stitches 21/22, bobble in 23, decrease in stitches 24/25, bobble in 26)
*bobble, hdc* 6 times, (stitches 27-38)
      hdc 35 (stitch 39)

So I am having trouble with row 10, the same row as melissa was having trouble with. I realized that on your pattern, you have at the end of row 10 ( hdc* 5 times, hdc 35) It is actually (hdc* 6 times, hdc 35) I think that will fix the problem, I hope. I am going to use this for my Halloween costume. I am excited. Thanx for all your hard work on this. It is great. So cute.

First off I just wanna say what an incredible pattern! To the T on everything! Thank you thank you thAnk you for sharing!

My only question is how many fpc are between the beard placement, like between the eyes! Every time I place mine I can’t get the hat on once I sew it on grrrrr! Any tips on that?

Again thank you for your time!

it’s different for every hat size and every face. That’s why I didn’t leave anything on the pattern. I just hold the beard up near the front brim put on the hat, then pull the hat on (a bit tight) then pull the beard down. Try moving the sides up to the front more if it’s too tight.

Thanks so much for the pattern I have a friend that I made some for. She had seen them and ask if I could find a pattern and make them for her. I have them made but have a time try to figure out where and how to attaché the beards! Can you please give me some tips on how to attaché them and where?

Thanks so much for any help!

I have a question regarding the mustache pattern Sz=Small Row 9 it says:
working in the ch space- *bobble, sc*, 3 times, bobble, (now work in the stitches)
    6+1=7stiches
but there is only 5 spaces in the chain

    I’m not sure I understand.

not work in the CH’s, work in the space. I don’t work in the ch’s, I’m trying to fill in the whole space. does that make sense?

      September 11, 2014 at 1:13 pm

Kim, I have the exact same question and can’t understand why it was not a problem for anyone else. But Ashlee’s answer didn’t help me. Still don’t understand. Did her answer help you?

    • Diane

I have this same question but I still don’t get it… I’m struggling with the size medium and the 7 chains but 11 stitches it suggests… what does it mean to work in the space? Sorry :s

    • Ashlee

      January 25, 2017 at 5:03 pm

you want the mustache nice and thick and when you chain it tends to stretch so the 11 stitches fill in nicely – but you want to just work in the space – around the whole chain rather than try to work into the chain stitches

    Ashlee,
I searched the internet for a beanie/beard and yours is the best around! Now all his friends want one, too. I’m asking them to supply the yarn. I usually end up with the cheap red heart yarn from walmart so I have to alter the pattern a little to get the right size.
Anway, Kudos on the great pattern.
    Thanks

ummmm I’m not sure. I made them and gave them away and I’m terrible at remembering to check measurements and gauge. The ones I did with the vanna were smaller than the ones I made with medium weight yarn. I’d do row one and see if it reaches both sides of the beanie easily??? sorry to be such a lame-o

Your pattern is so cute my grandson asked me to make one for him. I’m having a problem doing row 8 in the medium beard. I have 35 bobbles in row 7 but I don’t know how to get down to 31 bobbles with the instructions for row 8. I feel like I’m missing something in the instructions as I’m only getting half the bobbles needed. I hope you can help me. Thanks

Row 8 is a decrease row, hdc2tog is a decrease stitch there are 4 of them so you’ll go down 4 stitches

Love this pattern! It works up so quickly and easily. I’ve made several for my grown sons who really like them for when they’re working outside when it’s cold; keeps the cheeks, chin, and upper neck warm. I used a different beanie pattern that has fpdc in the lower half of it, sewed 2 buttons on each end of the beard, and they can just button the beard to the inside of the beanie when they need it! Going to try your beanie pattern next:) Keep up the good work-
