Is there anything cuter than a baby with a beard? This easy crochet bobble beard pattern comes in every size from infant to adult.

I originally made a simple beard pattern as a white elephant gift, but it seemed so simple I wanted to make it look like it had more life. Then I decided to try making the beard with these bobbles and I’ll never go back to the simple beard again!
Since then I’ve added a double loop beard that is perfect for times you want to be even hairier, or santa!
To attache the beard I make this simple striped beanie pattern in 7 sizes from newborn to extra large adult.

Here is an example of all 4 beards, Large, Medium, Small and Extra Small (on an Adult, adult, toddler and baby beanies). You can see the difference in length as well as width (or is that height?) Which is why I’d suggest a hook change over beard size change if trying a different yarn.

And Baby Boy looked so cute I decided I had to add an even smaller version, here is Miss K showing off the Extra small!!! Seriously, could this BE any cuter?
I love the thinner yarn for more details, but if you’d rather use a thicker yarn try it out first, if it makes the beard too large try either going down a hook size or down a beard size.

Bobble Beard
Material:
vanna glamour (you can use any yarn of similar size, if you go up a yarn weight you might want to go down a beard size or down a hook size)
Hook I- 5.50mm
Stripped beanie
Stitches used:
chain (ch)
single crochet (sc)
half double crochet (hdc)
half double crochet decrease (hdc2tog)
bobble- Yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over once more and draw it through the first 2 loops on your hook.Repeat that process (yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over once more and draw it through the first 2 loops on your hook) 3 more times in the same stitch. There are now 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over and draw the loop through all 5 stitches. You’ve made one bobble stitch. Notice that the bobble puffs to the back side of the swatch you’re working, which will be the right side of the work.

Lego boy in a child’s beanie and medium beard, Computer boy in child’s beanie and Medium beard, Baby Boy in a toddler beanie and small beard (he was pulling on it, I swear it fits good) and Princess in a child’s beanie and small beard.
My mom is modeling the Large beard with Miss K… Love the zoolander look (seriously though, it’s a bit creepy on adult women without some fun face of some kind)

Sew row ends of beard to the inside edge of your favorite beanie, or my striped beanie, making sure it is spaced evenly between the two sides. I sewed mine about 1/2 inch up inside. I like the way it pulls and looks better than attaching RIGHT to the edge, gives you a bit of a lip. You can place the beards as far front or back as you want.

Christine @ Projects Around The House
This is brilliant! I know you put a lot of hard work into figuring this out for all sizes. Good job and thanks for sharing! They look amazing
Ashlee
I did, thank you, I’ve been trying to get it JUST right for 6 months now.
lori
I am having trouble after it is sewn on. I love the pattern however, after it is sewn on, I can’t get it over my granddaughters head. I put the hat on and pinned the beard where it should go. I can’t get it on at all.Going to take it back off and use buttons to attach on one side. I had purchased a pattern on etsy that was too confusing to read. I am a tester for a well known fashion hat designer and was very upset by that pattern. Yours was very easy.
Ashlee
I’m sorry to hear that (about not going on) but excited that you found it easy to read, I get so many questions and complaints its wonderful to hear the compliments! I like to keep it sewn on because otherwise the kids pull off the beard and lose it. You could try sewing it lower in the hat brim? or maybe a bit more forward? It’s usually a tad bit tight getting it on, but not impossible, sorry about that
lori
I can’t sew it lower or it would hang down off her face. It’s just comfortable right now. This is for another customer. It can’t be moved at all. I only put buttons on 1 side so it won’t get pulled off and lost. THe other side is still attached. I used 2 buttons that go in tight, so not worried about that. maybe next time I will try again.I have added this hat to my online store.
Ashlee
smart the buttons on one side! Sorry it didn’t slip on easily for you still!
Linda Jefferys
I think this is so cute. Reading problems about being able to slip it over their heads, I’m wondering if maybe sewn on one side and Velcro on the other would work.
Ashlee
that could totally work, I’ve seen people use buttons as well. Personal choice totally. for me I just didn’t want my kids to lose them so I just sewed them on, and while it’s a little tight that once second once they are on it’s fine (and my kid are less likely to take them off that way.
Linda
I crocheted loops on the one that I made, if you are worried about losing it you could sew one side and put loops on the other.
Vickie Strode
Just finish my first one. It fits perfect and we have no problem getting it off or on. Everyone kept tagging me on this on facebook, and I kept putting off making it, thinking it would be a little difficult. But I was wrong. It was rather easy and fast to make. In the process of making each of my little ones that I babysit for, one for Christmas. Thanks so much for the pattern.
Ashlee
I’m so glad you enjoyed it!!
Holly Robbins
I have found that Hobby Lobby’s “I Love This Yarn” works very very well for these bearded beanies. It has the stretch that is needed. They turn out perfect every time I make them. 🙂
Ashlee
I’m so glad you’ve had good luck with these and you like them!
Liz Evans
I also used I Love This Yarn. I use it almost exclusively for everything I make. I love it! LOL Red Heart has a yarn called With Love and it is also a good yarn. I love this pattern and the beanie I made is black and red plaid.
Karli
I have to make this for a 1 year old in another state ( cant measure him) would i use the small size beard or medium.
Thanks
Ashlee
Yes, I used the small beard on my 1 year old and my 6 year old
Karli
I have had multiple request for this hat!
Everyone loves the colors of the hat Miss K is wearing.
Do you know the names of the yarn colors? I tried looking them up but is hard to match the color through the computer!!
Ashlee
it was the vannas glamour moonstone! and the hat was just white.
Sande
Just finished the project & love it! Thnks!
Kayla Farrell
Such a cute pattern!! If I use size 4 yarn ( lions brand heartland) what hook size would you suggest for an extra small beard??)
Faithlyn
Do you have a pattern for a hat.
Also how can i make the beard smaller then xsmall.
Ashlee
x small is the smallest I designed – not sure it would be safe any smaller on babies. and the hats are here
Laurie woodall
I need to know one dimple question what size does the beard have to be if itis made for a 6 to 12 month I need this to be in inches.
Ashlee
the baby in the pictures is 6 months old and is wearing the extra small – but in the end it depends on the babies head size (they are so so extreme at that age) and how you crochet (tight vs loose) and the yarn you go with – there is no one size that perfectly fits babies – my 1 year old was wearing the small
Judy
Thank you Ashlee!! My niece asked me if I could make one for her baby soon turning one!! I was so excited and grateful to find your pattern. Thank you for sharing your talent with us!!
amanda
Hi! I wasn’t working the medium hat and I’m just wondering if I’m reading it wrong on the last row? If I sc 11 then *bobble,sc* 5 times, bobble, sc 11. That ends up with 33 stitches and there is only 31 stitches…
Deb
Thank you for your hard work. I enjoyed making these. I have 7 men in my life thst a going to receive them for Christmas.
Julie
I don’t crochet, but, would love if you could make these for my 3 new Grandson’s that were born this year…
Ashlee Marie
I don’t sell any of the hats, I only share the pattern. I recommend trying etsy, some people use my pattern to sell items there.
Catherine Wanser
Do you have a pattern for a long beard without the bobbles please? A friend has cancer n lost his hair. He misses his beard n I would like to make one for him
Ashlee Marie
I have the double loop one https://ashleemarie.com/double-loop-crochet-santa-beard-pattern/
April
So where can I buy these cute bearded hats? Dont want to make them, I just want someone to make them for me.
Ashlee
I’m so sorry but I only offer the free pattern, i don’t sell any finished product. I DO allow people to use my patterns to make and sell patterns so I would check ETSY, I know some people were selling these there last winter.
Lucia
How could I get a free pattern? Thanks
Ashlee
it’s in the post your commenting on – just work from the post or click the green print button
Tricia
April, I’ve made a few of these & while I have an Etsy shop, OffMy Hooks, I haven’t listed any yet. I’m still filling my FB orders, but I would be happy to make one for you if you haven’t found one already. Any colors or sizes. This pattern is awesome, I love the way the beard fits the face so nicely!
Christeen Jarnagin
I make them… you can message me at fb – cristeenscrafts. Thanks, Ashlee, for the great pattern!
Isabella
I would make some for you svp.
Wanda David
Can you please explain the “bobble stitch”??
Ashlee
Like it says in the pattern:
bobble- Yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over once more and draw it through the first 2 loops on your hook.Repeat that process (yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over once more and draw it through the first 2 loops on your hook) 3 more times in the same stitch. There are now 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over and draw the loop through all 5 stitches. You’ve made one bobble stitch. Notice that the bobble puffs to the back side of the swatch you’re working, which will be the right side of the work.
Angela B
Ashlee, in the pattern for the small size in row 2 it states, ch 2, turn, hdc, *hdc, bobble stitch* (is this done in the same space together or is the hdc done then the bobble stitch in the next space? And in row 6 when it says *hdc2tog, bobble* is that also in the same stitch. Both of these are in between these asterisk. Thanks looking forward to hearing back.
Ashlee
each hdc and bobble is in it’s own stitch, you repeat the stitches between the ** however many times it say
sharie
hi, quick ? dont bobbles usually end with a slip stitch to make it pop out..since in this pattern it goes from bobble to bobble..do you still have a clear pop in the individual bobble? hope my ? is understandable..lol
sharie
lol never mind i was reading wrong
Ashlee
actually they go from bobble to hdc to bobble, not bobble to bobble.
rosalía gonzález ruiz
me gustaria saber si puedes poner las instrucciones con gráficos porque al traducirlas no se entienden muchas gracias y felicidades
Ashlee
I’m so sorry, I don’t speak Spanish and don’t know anything about crochet patterns in Spanish. I’m happy to posts a translated versions of my patterns if people want to send them to me though!
Ellen
I think she asked if you could put instructions and pictures together (as in, pictures of doing the stitches, assembly, etc.) because she’s having a hard time understanding how it all goes together.
By the way, it’s a nifty pattern — I’m currently working on a few for the beardless guys in my family. Our kids really enjoy the photos of your models. 🙂
Ashlee
thank you so much! my kids do make pretty great models! hope your family enjoyed them
Emily
Hi, I do understand spanish. She’s asking, “I would like to know if you can put up instructions with pictures? The translation between English and Spanish makes it hard to understand. Thanks, Have a a good day!”
She’s not asking for the pattern to be translated, just for some pictures of the project in progress.
Hope this helps 🙂
Ashlee
thanks so much!
Sheri
I cannot get this pattern to print any suggestions as to why?
Ashlee
I’m not sure! I tested it and it’s working for me. What browser are you on? maybe I can email the designer of the print plug in and ask them if I can figure out what makes it not work for you. Have you tested it on different browsers?
ORetha Vest
Thank you so much for sharing this pattern! It was great fun to make and lots of laughs were had with trying the beard on everyone in the house!
I did also have the problem with not being able to squeeze the hat on once the beard was attached, I even tried going down a beard size but no big deal(I figure my issue is cheap yarn anyway).
To fix the beard isuue without adding buttons or velcro to the hat which I want to allow the recipient to wear seperately anyway, i just chained 12-15 stitched connecting the corners of both sides so the beard loops over the ears and is held on that way with the hat then pulled over top. works well enough for me anyway!
Again thank you for such a fun pattern!
Ashlee
going DOWN a beard size would only make it tighter, not looser. Sometimes simply moving the beard a bit more forward on the hat helps. But I’ve found it’s just a bit tight to get on, but worth it. Glad you found something that worked for you
Alex
I absolutely LOVE this pattern!!!!! Thank you so much for sharing it. My son has been asking me to make him one for the longest time. Made it over the weekend and he was so happy! Thanks again 🙂
Ashlee
you are so welcome! I’m so glad you and your son loved it!
Linda Benedict
It would be nice to give the amount of ounces needed to finish each project. My husband is a big guy, so I know I’m going to need a big skein of each color, but just how big a skein?
Ashlee
I’m so sorry, I just made these for fun and put up the patterns I made. I am not a professional and I don’t keep track of stuff like this (thus why I offer it for free rather than charge for the pattern). I made about 3 hats out of one skein, but they were various sizes, I’d prob only get 2 out of a large skein, and only 1 large one of out a smaller skein.
Georgia
I made this hat and beard and had people asking if they could buy one from me, I wasn’t sure if you were okay with that or not because it’s your pattern, so I wanted to ask first.
Ashlee
thank you so much for thinking to ask. I have NO interest in making and selling my own so I totally allow others to sell them, I just ask that anywhere you share and list them you 1. use your own images (so people see what they are buying, your work, not mine) and that you link to the pattern so that people who want to make their own can (they wouldn’t be a client anyway, (people who make their own)
Kirstin
Hi I have a little shoppe and have had a request for this can I use your pattern to sell if I mention you on the tag
Ashlee
if you give pattern credit and link so people who want to make their own can then yes I allow people to sell items from my patterns – but you may NOT use my images and you my not sell the pattern
Elizabeth Goodpaster
Did you sew these to the hats? Or did you chain on the ends to make loops to put on ears?
Ashlee
personally I sew them to the hats, I HATE things around my ears – but that’s TOTALLY a good way to go as well as buttons on the inside of the hats
Laura
I’m going to make this for a 1yr old, do I do the extra small?
Ashlee Marie
my 1 year old was not extra small – but each kid is different.
Margaret
Thank you for the pattern! These are TOO cute. I’m telling ya, I’m ready to frame a photo of that baby with the big eyes.
Ashlee
isn’t she beautiful, my sweet niece!
Debi
Nice work and nice blog! I’m a fellow hooker, pattern writer and blogger, found your pattern on pinterest. There’s a group on facebook for blogging hookers, I just liked your fan page if you’re interested add me as a friend and I can add you to the group. 🙂 Hope to see you around. ~Debi
Ashlee
thanks, done!
Regina
Oh my goodness….just the cutest!! That is one of the best pictures I’ve seen!! Just love the look on Miss K’s face!! Priceless!! Thank you so much for sharing!!
Ashlee
so fun, huh, I’m so glad I added the extra small sizes!
Diane
I made one and I love it!!thanks soooo much!!
Ashlee
I’m so glad! I love hearing success stories!
Teale
Thanks so much for this pattern! I’ve been trying to find one that had a beard like this, the bobbles are perfect! Thanks so much for posting!
Ashlee
your so welcome! Last year plain beard was fun, but I love love LOVE the bobble beard!
Kristiina
Are you kidding me? These are the cutest things ever!
Ashlee
the smaller they are the cuter, huh!
Nicole
I have been looking for patterns for beards in all sizes. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I actually like the look of the bobbles better than others I’ve seen. I’m so excited, I am going to make one for my nephew for Christmas!!! Love the striped beanie too!
Ashlee
I agree, I like the bobble too! Let me know how it goes!
Jasmin
SUPER!! Love the pattern. Just finished one for my one year old. Almost want to wake him up from his nap to try it on (I said almost ha ha). Love the photo with your mom, that expression is priceless. Thanks so much for sharing
Ashlee
did you love it once he woke up?
Heidi @ Mom's Crafty Space
These are so super cute! I REALLY need to learn how to crochet!
Ashlee
thanks! It’s really pretty easy, just takes a bit of time to play around and figure it out!
Usha
Both the beards and the baby models looks so cute and adorable…Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. May the coming year bless you and your family with everything that your hearts desire.
Usha

Ashlee
Thank you so much!
Karyn
OMG thank you so much, I have been patiently awaiting your beard for kids pattern so I could make a child size one…. it’s perfect!!!
Ashlee
HA! Sorry it took so long, but I wanted to test every size before releasing it!
Sam
These are just too cute. Just a quick question, though–about how big around are each of the sizes? I’d like to make this for a baby with an abnormally large head, so I’m not sure about measurements. Thanks!
Ashlee
it completely depends on the yarn you end up using and how tight or loose you crochet. that’s why I give general sizes and also at the bottom of each picture share what size I made for each person wearing one. how old?
Brenda
I have been asked to make a beard that it much longer and wilder than yours. I think the bobble beard will be a great base, but could you give me an idea for how to make it longer? Think mountain man without a shower for weeks! Thanks.
Ashlee
I’d do more like my double loop santa hat, but pull the loops much longer rather than the bobbles
Sam
Thanks for replying! He’s four months old, but I just measured his head at nearly 19 inches. The kid looks like a bobble head, it’s crazy. The yarn I’ve got is the Lion Brand Pound of Love baby yarn, I think it’s sport weight. I already tried doing the toddler size with that yarn and a size G hook, but it was still way too small for him. I crochet kinda tight, so that’s probably a factor.
Ashlee
the G is two sizes down in hook size, that’s going to be WAY tiny always start with the hook size a pattern calls for and if it’s too small go up a hook size or up a pattern size! my niece, in the white hat, if also 4 months old and wearing the baby size, (which is a standard 6-12 months- but if I put sizes on a pattern people get upset when they perfectly fit that size. like my 4 month old niece not fitting the 3-6 month size cause her head is so big! so I named it baby, infant and newborn instead).
Jean
Hi Chelsea,
I’am doing the large beard .Could you tell me how many bobbles are in each row? Ikeep on coming out wrong. Thanks for sharing your pattern and your time.
Ashlee
I’m actually Ashlee, chelsea is my sister and photographer ;).
row 2- 18 bobbles,
row 4- 19 bobbles,
row 6- 18 bobbles,
row 8- 19 bobbles,
row 10- 16 bobbles
row 12- 6 and 6 bobbles
row 13- 8 bobbles
Penny
I love these patterns! I made some of the beanies and beards for my boys. Other people are asking me to make them too. Can these be made for sale? I am new to this and don’t want to do anything wrong
Ashlee
yes you can, just please give me credit if you sell online and link to my pattern so that those who do want to make their own can. you’ll still get business for those that don’t want to make their own.
brenda
Thanks for the tip. I will let you know how it turns out!
Ashlee
your so welcome! If there is enough interest in an adult size I’ll make a pattern for a double loop adult beard.
Wanda David
If you make a double loop adult size, I would use it for a Santa hat & beard for my husband! It would make a great Halloween costume!
Ashlee
I’ve had a few requests for an adult size! I’ll try to work on one this year, but honestly I’m pretty slammed, maybe by next year!
Jean
Hi Ashlee ,
sorry for the mix up thank you for your reply
Ashlee
no big deal, my own mother calls me chelsea sometimes 😉 let me know how the beard goes!
Debs
Hi. I am an almost total beginner at crochet but still managed to make this following your pattern! Thanks so much, my little boy will love it when he sees it in the morning!
Ashlee
YAY! i love hearing that! since I just share what I make, and I’m not a “professional” I’m always a little worried, glad you enjoyed it!
Melissa
Well, I’m doing something wrong. No matter what I do, on row 10, I end up with 3 empty stitches. I’ve torn out the row plenty of times & I still end up with 3 empty stitches @ the end. It’s getting rather frustrating.
Ashlee
I’m assuming the large size, since you didn’t specify? and that’s the decrease row. Do you have the correct number before? 39? with the 4 decreases you should be at 35. In row 8 there should be 19 bobbles across, and in row 10 you’ll go down to 16 bobbles. Does that help?
