Is there anything cuter than a baby with a beard? This easy crochet bobble beard pattern comes in every size from infant to adult.

free pattern for crochet bobble beards, in 4 sizes

I originally made a simple beard pattern as a white elephant gift, but it seemed so simple I wanted to make it look like it had more life. Then I decided to try making the beard with these bobbles and I’ll never go back to the simple beard again!

Since then I’ve added a double loop beard that is perfect for times you want to be even hairier, or santa!

To attache the beard I make this simple striped beanie pattern in 7 sizes from newborn to extra large adult.

If you want to purchase all 5 patterns ad-free and printable at a discount click below.

Buy all 5 beard and beanie Ad-Free pattern pdf’s discounted here!

take the striped beanie and a bobble beard and you have bearded beanies, free pattern everyone loves

Here is an example of all 4 beards, Large, Medium, Small and Extra Small (on an Adult, adult, toddler and baby beanies).  You can see the difference in length as well as width (or is that height?) Which is why I’d suggest a hook change over beard size change if trying a different yarn.

free pattern for a crochet bobble beard to attach to your favorite beanie, extra small, small, medium and large linked to a free multi-sized beanie pattern

And Baby Boy looked so cute I decided I had to add an even smaller version, here is Miss K showing off the Extra small!!!   Seriously, could this BE any cuter?

I love the thinner yarn for more details, but if you’d rather use a thicker yarn try it out first, if it makes the beard too large try either going down a hook size or down a beard size.

Bobble Beard

Material:
vanna glamour (you can use any yarn of similar size, if you go up a yarn weight you might want to go down a beard size or down a hook size)
Hook I- 5.50mm
Stripped beanie

Stitches used:
chain (ch)
single crochet (sc)
half double crochet (hdc)
half double crochet decrease (hdc2tog)

bobble- Yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over once more and draw it through the first 2 loops on your hook.Repeat that process (yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over once more and draw it through the first 2 loops on your hook) 3 more times in the same stitch. There are now 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over and draw the loop through all 5 stitches. You’ve made one bobble stitch. Notice that the bobble puffs to the back side of the swatch you’re working, which will be the right side of the work.

Grandma, Grand baby and every age in between all rockin the crochet bearded beanies

Lego boy in a child’s beanie and medium beard, Computer boy in child’s beanie and Medium beard, Baby Boy in a toddler beanie and small beard (he was pulling on it, I swear it fits good) and Princess in a child’s beanie and small beard.

My mom is modeling the Large beard with Miss K…  Love the zoolander look (seriously though, it’s a bit creepy on adult women without some fun face of some kind)

you can see where I attached the beard in this picture, free crochet pattern

Sew row ends of beard to the inside edge of your favorite beanie, or my striped beanie, making sure it is spaced evenly between the two sides. I sewed mine about 1/2 inch up inside.  I like the way it pulls and looks better than attaching RIGHT to the edge, gives you a bit of a lip.  You can place the beards as far front or back as you want.

babies look sooo cute in bobble bearded beanies, free pattern

I did, thank you, I’ve been trying to get it JUST right for 6 months now.

I am having trouble after it is sewn on. I love the pattern however, after it is sewn on, I can’t get it over my granddaughters head. I put the hat on and pinned the beard where it should go. I can’t get it on at all.Going to take it back off and use buttons to attach on one side. I had purchased a pattern on etsy that was too confusing to read. I am a tester for a well known fashion hat designer and was very upset by that pattern. Yours was very easy.

      October 23, 2013 at 1:42 am

I’m sorry to hear that (about not going on) but excited that you found it easy to read, I get so many questions and complaints its wonderful to hear the compliments! I like to keep it sewn on because otherwise the kids pull off the beard and lose it. You could try sewing it lower in the hat brim? or maybe a bit more forward? It’s usually a tad bit tight getting it on, but not impossible, sorry about that

    • lori

      October 23, 2013 at 5:25 am

I can’t sew it lower or it would hang down off her face. It’s just comfortable right now. This is for another customer. It can’t be moved at all. I only put buttons on 1 side so it won’t get pulled off and lost. THe other side is still attached. I used 2 buttons that go in tight, so not worried about that. maybe next time I will try again.I have added this hat to my online store.

smart the buttons on one side! Sorry it didn’t slip on easily for you still!

      July 23, 2014 at 10:18 pm

I think this is so cute. Reading problems about being able to slip it over their heads, I’m wondering if maybe sewn on one side and Velcro on the other would work.

    • Ashlee

      July 26, 2014 at 2:41 am

that could totally work, I’ve seen people use buttons as well. Personal choice totally. for me I just didn’t want my kids to lose them so I just sewed them on, and while it’s a little tight that once second once they are on it’s fine (and my kid are less likely to take them off that way.

    • Linda

      October 23, 2014 at 1:01 pm

I crocheted loops on the one that I made, if you are worried about losing it you could sew one side and put loops on the other.

Just finish my first one. It fits perfect and we have no problem getting it off or on. Everyone kept tagging me on this on facebook, and I kept putting off making it, thinking it would be a little difficult. But I was wrong. It was rather easy and fast to make. In the process of making each of my little ones that I babysit for, one for Christmas. Thanks so much for the pattern.

I have found that Hobby Lobby’s “I Love This Yarn” works very very well for these bearded beanies. It has the stretch that is needed. They turn out perfect every time I make them. 🙂

I also used I Love This Yarn. I use it almost exclusively for everything I make. I love it! LOL Red Heart has a yarn called With Love and it is also a good yarn. I love this pattern and the beanie I made is black and red plaid.

I have had multiple request for this hat!
Everyone loves the colors of the hat Miss K is wearing.
Do you know the names of the yarn colors? I tried looking them up but is hard to match the color through the computer!!

      October 10, 2016 at 11:06 am

Do you have a pattern for a hat.
Also how can i make the beard smaller then xsmall.

    • Ashlee

      January 29, 2017 at 1:25 am

x small is the smallest I designed – not sure it would be safe any smaller on babies. and the hats are here

    • Laurie woodall

      December 14, 2016 at 7:22 am

I need to know one dimple question what size does the beard have to be if itis made for a 6 to 12 month I need this to be in inches.

    • Ashlee

      January 25, 2017 at 9:03 pm

the baby in the pictures is 6 months old and is wearing the extra small – but in the end it depends on the babies head size (they are so so extreme at that age) and how you crochet (tight vs loose) and the yarn you go with – there is no one size that perfectly fits babies – my 1 year old was wearing the small

Hi! I wasn’t working the medium hat and I’m just wondering if I’m reading it wrong on the last row? If I sc 11 then *bobble,sc* 5 times, bobble, sc 11. That ends up with 33 stitches and there is only 31 stitches…

Can you please explain the “bobble stitch”??

    • Ashlee

      November 25, 2014 at 11:38 pm

Like it says in the pattern:
bobble- Yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over once more and draw it through the first 2 loops on your hook.Repeat that process (yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over once more and draw it through the first 2 loops on your hook) 3 more times in the same stitch. There are now 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over and draw the loop through all 5 stitches. You’ve made one bobble stitch. Notice that the bobble puffs to the back side of the swatch you’re working, which will be the right side of the work.

Ashlee, in the pattern for the small size in row 2 it states, ch 2, turn, hdc, *hdc, bobble stitch* (is this done in the same space together or is the hdc done then the bobble stitch in the next space? And in row 6 when it says *hdc2tog, bobble* is that also in the same stitch. Both of these are in between these asterisk. Thanks looking forward to hearing back.

    • Ashlee

      February 1, 2015 at 4:57 am

each hdc and bobble is in it’s own stitch, you repeat the stitches between the ** however many times it say

    • Ellen

I think she asked if you could put instructions and pictures together (as in, pictures of doing the stitches, assembly, etc.) because she’s having a hard time understanding how it all goes together.

By the way, it’s a nifty pattern — I’m currently working on a few for the beardless guys in my family. Our kids really enjoy the photos of your models. 🙂

Hi, I do understand spanish. She’s asking, “I would like to know if you can put up instructions with pictures? The translation between English and Spanish makes it hard to understand. Thanks, Have a a good day!”

She’s not asking for the pattern to be translated, just for some pictures of the project in progress.

      Hope this helps 🙂

I cannot get this pattern to print any suggestions as to why?

    • Ashlee

      November 26, 2014 at 10:54 am

I’m not sure! I tested it and it’s working for me. What browser are you on? maybe I can email the designer of the print plug in and ask them if I can figure out what makes it not work for you. Have you tested it on different browsers?

    • ORetha Vest

      November 23, 2014 at 10:46 am

Thank you so much for sharing this pattern! It was great fun to make and lots of laughs were had with trying the beard on everyone in the house!

I did also have the problem with not being able to squeeze the hat on once the beard was attached, I even tried going down a beard size but no big deal(I figure my issue is cheap yarn anyway).

To fix the beard isuue without adding buttons or velcro to the hat which I want to allow the recipient to wear seperately anyway, i just chained 12-15 stitched connecting the corners of both sides so the beard loops over the ears and is held on that way with the hat then pulled over top. works well enough for me anyway!

Again thank you for such a fun pattern!

    • Ashlee

      November 26, 2014 at 3:05 pm

going DOWN a beard size would only make it tighter, not looser. Sometimes simply moving the beard a bit more forward on the hat helps. But I’ve found it’s just a bit tight to get on, but worth it. Glad you found something that worked for you

It would be nice to give the amount of ounces needed to finish each project. My husband is a big guy, so I know I’m going to need a big skein of each color, but just how big a skein?

I’m so sorry, I just made these for fun and put up the patterns I made. I am not a professional and I don’t keep track of stuff like this (thus why I offer it for free rather than charge for the pattern). I made about 3 hats out of one skein, but they were various sizes, I’d prob only get 2 out of a large skein, and only 1 large one of out a smaller skein.

I made this hat and beard and had people asking if they could buy one from me, I wasn’t sure if you were okay with that or not because it’s your pattern, so I wanted to ask first.

    • Ashlee

      April 7, 2015 at 9:50 pm

thank you so much for thinking to ask. I have NO interest in making and selling my own so I totally allow others to sell them, I just ask that anywhere you share and list them you 1. use your own images (so people see what they are buying, your work, not mine) and that you link to the pattern so that people who want to make their own can (they wouldn’t be a client anyway, (people who make their own)

Hi I have a little shoppe and have had a request for this can I use your pattern to sell if I mention you on the tag

    • Ashlee

      January 25, 2017 at 5:03 pm

if you give pattern credit and link so people who want to make their own can then yes I allow people to sell items from my patterns – but you may NOT use my images and you my not sell the pattern

Did you sew these to the hats? Or did you chain on the ends to make loops to put on ears?

    • Ashlee

      January 25, 2017 at 4:37 pm

personally I sew them to the hats, I HATE things around my ears – but that’s TOTALLY a good way to go as well as buttons on the inside of the hats

These are just too cute. Just a quick question, though–about how big around are each of the sizes? I’d like to make this for a baby with an abnormally large head, so I’m not sure about measurements. Thanks!

it completely depends on the yarn you end up using and how tight or loose you crochet. that’s why I give general sizes and also at the bottom of each picture share what size I made for each person wearing one. how old?

    December 28, 2012 at 3:44 pm

I have been asked to make a beard that it much longer and wilder than yours. I think the bobble beard will be a great base, but could you give me an idea for how to make it longer? Think mountain man without a shower for weeks! Thanks.

I’d do more like my double loop santa hat, but pull the loops much longer rather than the bobbles

Thanks for replying! He’s four months old, but I just measured his head at nearly 19 inches. The kid looks like a bobble head, it’s crazy. The yarn I’ve got is the Lion Brand Pound of Love baby yarn, I think it’s sport weight. I already tried doing the toddler size with that yarn and a size G hook, but it was still way too small for him. I crochet kinda tight, so that’s probably a factor.

the G is two sizes down in hook size, that’s going to be WAY tiny always start with the hook size a pattern calls for and if it’s too small go up a hook size or up a pattern size! my niece, in the white hat, if also 4 months old and wearing the baby size, (which is a standard 6-12 months- but if I put sizes on a pattern people get upset when they perfectly fit that size. like my 4 month old niece not fitting the 3-6 month size cause her head is so big! so I named it baby, infant and newborn instead).

Well, I’m doing something wrong. No matter what I do, on row 10, I end up with 3 empty stitches. I’ve torn out the row plenty of times & I still end up with 3 empty stitches @ the end. It’s getting rather frustrating.

I’m assuming the large size, since you didn’t specify? and that’s the decrease row. Do you have the correct number before? 39? with the 4 decreases you should be at 35. In row 8 there should be 19 bobbles across, and in row 10 you’ll go down to 16 bobbles. Does that help?
