Easy to crochet striped beanie with a ribbed edge – includes all sizes from infant to large adult

free pattern for this striped beanie

(Princess is wearing a Child’s size, The Reader is wearing an Adult, the four hat’s below are: adult, child, toddler, baby)

So last year I wrote a pattern for a bearded beanie, and the number one request I get is for a child’s size. But what size, there are SO many sizes for children.

And do you know how LONG that pattern would be? to incorporate each and every bearded beanie size options? Insane.

So I decided to break it into two posts, a beanie post, and a beard post, today is the Beanie, and tomorrow are the bobble beards, mix and match to get the right fit for you child/teen/baby/adult!

I actually wanted more pictures to share, but didn’t want to wait any longer now that the patterns were done and tested… I’ll be adding more pictures as I take some!

I love these hats, thank you so much for taking the time to write out the pattern for each size! I know that I tend to crochet tighter than the average hooker so I am a gauge checker! Do you have a gauge for the hats and maybe even the beards? Thank you in advance for the help!

Hi! Thank you for sharing this lovely pattern, your tutorial is easy to follow, very precise! I’m a stay at home mom who loves crochet and sometimes i sell at weekend flea markets with friends. May I have permission to sell finished products based on your pattern? I’ll put a link to your website on my product tag and of course mention it’s your pattern. May I also sell the finished product online, should I be able to get around to finally setting it up? Please please?

as long as you give me credit, link back to the post anywhere you sell (so that people who want to make their own can – and people who can make there own wouldn’t buy anyway so you don’t lose anything) and use your own images (so that clients can see YOUR work not mine)

I have searched for a good beanie and beard pattern……my search has ended :). Thank you so much for sharing and for making it “free”. I would like to make and sell these. I see from former posts that you are ok with that as long as i credit you with the pattern. I will sooooo give you the credit. Thanks again!

looks amazing! I totally allow people to sell items made from my patterns, I just ask that you give me pattern credit and that you link to the post so that people who want to make their own can (and anyone who can make their own wouldn’t be a customer anyway so your not losing any orders)

I love your beard hat design. I saw the photo of the beards in three sizes without the hat.
Can you please tell me the approximate length and width of each size beard?
I understand it will be different with various hooks and yarns, but what are the dimensions in the Vanna Glamour yarn and Size J hook as per your instructions?
    Thanks!

honestly I never measured, I think even my own beards are different sizes every time I make them! the small is around 4 1/2 and the medium is about 5 1/2, I don’t have any extra small or large’s left to measure, I’m so sorry about that

I tried the hat onto each child before sewing the beard into place so a little different for each child, just in front of center on each side, if that helps

    Hi Ashley!
These are SO MUCH FUN! I’m making one for my 5 year-old nephew for Christmas 😀

    Quick question…
The pattern ends with two or three rows of: “Ch1, *FPhdc in next st, BPhdc in next st* around, sl st to top of ch 2, fasten off weave in ends”

I’m a little perplexed what “ch2” refers to.

Do you start the first of those rows with ch 1, makes 30 x *FPhdc, BPhdc*,
then a ch 2 and a second (and third) row of 30 x *FPhdc, BPhdc*,
and end with a slip stitch on top of the ch 2 ?

    Thanks you so much!

nope it is just a typo, it should say sl st on top of the ch 1, fixed it!

Hi – I need to make one of these for a 2 year old boy with a 14″ head. Can you tell me which on would be the most appropriate? Also for the beard that goes with it.

    Thanks for these patterns!

honestly I recently moved and I don’t have access to any of my hats, ALSO it totally depends on how tight or loose you crochet! I can in NO WAY promise any sizing. for my year old I did a toddler size with a small beard. I’d do just the first 2 rows of the beard and measure it before finishing it

    Hi,

I just got into crochet and found your pattern on Pintrest. Love it! So adorable. I know that everyone crochets tighter/looser, but I was wondering aprox. how much yardage you use per hat with the yarn you listed and then I can figure out how much I should use with my gauge, yarn type, etc. Thanks!

I have no idea, I have about 5 twelve gallon buckets of yarn and I just use what I have. I can usually get 3 hats from a fresh ball, but if it’s been partially used then less. I just make something and share the pattern, I don’t really pay attention to this stuff (thus why it’s free)

Hi, I was wondering in you know the circumference of each hat. I’m going to be making one for a co-workers son (he’s going to be three) and I’m not sure if I should go with a toddler or a child hat.

Because everyone crochets so differently they always turn out different. I’d go with the childs hat, better to be a little too big than too small, the difference between child and toddler is very small. UNLESS you crochet large, then go with the toddler… GAH, no help at all, sorry!

Hi Ashlee, I know it’s been quite a while since you’ve made these hats, but I was wondering if you happened to know what color of Vanna glamour yarn you used on your niece’s stripes and beard in the photo sample of the baby beanie and extra small beard? I have had a customer request that specific color and just thought I would ask in case you knew. Thanks!

First, thank you so much for putting so much detail into this pattern and the bobble beard! I made my friends’ new baby one and she absolutely loved it. I actually put a button on the corner of the beard and a loop inside the hat so it could be worn with or without it. He looks so cute in it. I’m currently working on an extra large adult hat now. From a relatively new crochet-er, thank you again!

These look so fun to make, and I’m so excited to give them a go! I was wondering if you could help me with how much yarn I would need? I’m planning on making an infant beanie with an extra small beard and a child beanie with a small beard. Thanks for your help!

I just used leftover yarn for each of these, they were all way less than a skein of yarn.

I just wanted to say Thank you for the free pattern. I was told at the last minute I needed Christmas presents for 3 extra boys. When I saw the pattern I thought it would be a great gift. Super easy to understand and read your patterns and worked up in just a few hours. Thanks again.

Thank you for the pattern it is v ery simply written- especially if one is familiar with crochet terms, magic circle etc. you have been patient with these requests of how to, size questions, and so many redirects to the beard link.
