Easy to crochet striped beanie with a ribbed edge – includes all sizes from infant to large adult

free pattern for this striped beanie

(Princess is wearing a Child’s size, The Reader is wearing an Adult, the four hat’s below are: adult, child, toddler, baby)

So last year I wrote a pattern for a bearded beanie, and the number one request I get is for a child’s size. But what size, there are SO many sizes for children.

And do you know how LONG that pattern would be? to incorporate each and every bearded beanie size options? Insane.

So I decided to break it into two posts, a beanie post, and a beard post, today is the Beanie, and tomorrow are the bobble beards, mix and match to get the right fit for you child/teen/baby/adult!

I actually wanted more pictures to share, but didn’t want to wait any longer now that the patterns were done and tested… I’ll be adding more pictures as I take some!

    What do I do if:
    1. I don’t want to change colors
    2. I want to add buttons to make it removable

    Thanks a bunch!

then don’t change the color 😉 just stick with the hdc row your already repeating until it’s the length want (remembering to leave room for the final ribbed rows)

I always attach it but feel free to add buttons to the inside of the beanie if you want!

    Hi there,
I am absolutely loving this hat/beard combo! My question for you (forgive me, I’m still a bit new at crocheting): when I start the beanie with the magic ring, do I need to start with a row of sc? I’ve never just started off with a HDC before.
    Thanks!

nope, you can totally start with the hdc, or any other stitch you just need to chain before you get started to the right height!

I’m imagining that these hats only take one skein of yarn or less? Even the adult sized ones? Your patterns are great! Thank you for being so generous and sharing them with us for free!

    Hi Ashlee,

I was wondering do you sell these? If so how much do you charge? Am expecting a boy in Dec. and think this is so cute and would like him to have one 🙂

I’m fairly new to crochet. I’m mostly a knitter. I figured out how to do the magic ring, but I am confused at how to start the hat from there. Would be great if you would email me further instructions. Thank you. I love the bobblebearded hat want to make one for my 6 year old son and 1 year old daughter. 🙂

did you try these instructions – magic ring start – you start by doing row 1 into the loop.

oh good! I usually only get to comments twice a month, so time sensitive stuff sometimes gets lost. I’m glad you figured it out.

Ok so I got the ring down, I know how to do the stitches, but every time I get to row 5 the hat starts curling and waving and is no longer making a dome shape…what am I doing wrong? I’ve pulled it loose and started over several times now and I just can’t seem to find my error. Is there one or will it all just even out? Please help I really love this pattern.

are you using the same yarn weight? if your yarn is thicker it will be really thick and curl. Or you might simply crochet tighter than I do. Try a thinner yarn, or larger hook and see if that helps.

I’ve made the bobble beard and the beanie. Do you just attach the beard to the beanie with yarn and needle?

      October 23, 2013 at 1:43 am

yes, I just use the same yarn as the brim of the beanie and sew the beard into the inside. Some people prefer buttons, or adding chains for wrapping around ears, but there is no right way, just whatever you prefer!

I love these and will be making them for my cousins, one of their babies, my brother and his baby for Christmas, but I have a question on yardage. I need to make three adult hats, two large beards (my brother already has an enormous beard of his own) and two x-small beards. I haven’t seen any yardage in your patterns, but it would really help me, as I have to order it and have it sent to France, so I can’t just go run to the store if I need more… Would be great to have just a rough estimate. Thank you!!

I’m so sorry, I’m not a professional, just play around and make things for my kids and then share them for others. So I don’t keep track of yardage at all. the vanna glamour I had one skein of each color (purple, gold and brown) and had plenty for all 6 I made, and for the other yarn, I have no clue, totally used scraps I’ll try to be better at keeping track in the future

No worries, I understand. I looked up “how to crochet an adult beanie” and even there, it didn’t have any yardage info. So I’ll just get a couple skeins for the beards and a bunch more for the beanies! 🙂

First of all, I want to say this is a great pattern and I’m super excited to try it out. I just have one question: Do you know the approximate ages for the different sizes? I’m doing them for three of my little cousins ages 4, 8, and 10. I’m not sure if I should do toddler or child for the 4-year-old and if I should do child or teen for the other two. Thanks a bunch!

that’s why I wrote the sizes I used for each child under their pictures so you could see the sizes on and try to judge. Seriously sizing is the WORST! Every child it SO different it’s so hard to judge. I prefer to work with my model close to try on. And sometimes I mixed sizes sometimes a small beard but medium hat. I’m so sorry I wish it was easier, but if I set a rule people get angry with me when it doesn’t fit! you can see more pictures on the beard pattern

Hi Ashlee, thanks a lot for your efforts and great patterns. I’d like to suggest the way to specify the size. As it’s absolutely true that every child is different, the easiest way, I think, is to use the head circumference as a size: for just a beanie it’s enough to know the circumference taken against the forehead, and for a bobble bearded beanie I’d add the circumference from the chin through the vertex (I hope I’ve explained clearly, I’m Russian;))
      Happy crocheting!

    HI Ashlee,
I too have 5 children although they are now 29-39, same 10 year difference! Thanks for the wonderful patterns, I’m going to make one for my youngest grandson (19 mo) to help keep him warm this winter. The patterns are adorable and look easy to do. Thanks again for sharing.

It’s kind of crazy when I think that she’ll be 16 and driving when he’s starting kindergarten… but usually it’s just so much fun! I hope you enjoy the pattern and don’t have trouble making it!

Adorable! A young father-to-be saw this online and asked if I thought I could make one for his son with a beard that would match his own golden-red beard. Your pattern is so brilliantly written and easy to follow. The infant version turned out so well, I think I will make Dad his very own matching hat & beard. Perfect for those first father & son pictures. Thanks for sharing your handiwork!

Thank you so much for the excellent beanie and beard patterns! I bought a pattern from Etsy that was awful and was going to give up the project. Then my sister found your site and patterns and I now have completed pieces. Thank you so much for writing easy to follow patterns and being willing to share them at no cost!

I just love this hat! I am very new to crocheting and teaching myself with YouTube and info websites like this one. I have a question! How do you make a second row of the fphdc bpfdc connect to the first? I was having trouble discerning what post to go around for the second row. Thanks! And thanks for this website! 🙂

you are repeating the pattern, doing the fphdc in the previous fphdc, that’s what creates the ribbed look.

Hi there. I’m also struggling with this part. Do you mean that we continue to work around the posts of the first row?

i’m stumped right out of the gate….the first round says to start with ch2 and then 8 hdd in ring for a total of 8 hdd? isn’t that 9 hdd when you include the first ch2? thx!

I don’t count the ch 2. In fact no pattern does unless it specifically says “count the ch 2 as a hdc here and throughout”

Thanks so much for posting each size. It was very kind of you to take your time to write the patterns for us, the readers, and your followers.

The children in your photos are beautiful and handsome! The little blonde fellow is a born model!

You are obviously a talented photographer as well!

My adult son asked me to make him a tight fitting beanie to wear under his ballcap which he always wears. Your beanie pattern is perfect!

His sons asked Gramma to make them Bob Marley hats from their descriptions of how they wanted their individual hats to be! Well, 2 days ago Daddy brought them to pick up their hats and they were THRILLED with the way their hats turned out.

NOW, I will also have a BEARD to attach to their hats to further represent Bob Marley! They will get a real HOOT out of their BEARDS when I see them in a couple of days! THANK-YOU for giving me a terrific beard pattern that is PERFECT for these Bob Marley hats.

It’s not clear to me how these boys, at 10 and 11, have recently become interested in Bob Marley and wanting a hat like he wore but Bob Marley’s been a favorite Reggae singer of mine for years!

Thanks again and keep up the EXCELLENT, CREATIVE, INSPIRATIONAL DESIGNS and sharing them with us!

I’m so tickled that your son and grandsons all wanted crochet beanies! How totally fun that they have gotten into Bob Marley! Need to create a dreadlock hat now!

I do not sell them, I’m so sorry, I simply don’t have the time. But I do allow people to use my patterns to make and sell items if you can find someone how does make and sell crochet items!

I just made the child size hat using Caron Simply Soft (4) yarn and an I (5.5mm) hook. It’s just a little bit big on my almost 5 year old, and actually fits me pretty well. (I would have added a row or two for length if it was for me.) I thought I’d post to give people an idea of how it turns out.
It’s not too big for my 5 year old to wear, and she’ll be able to wear it as she continues to grow! Beautiful hat and great pattern! Now I need to try a beard!
I am going to make one for my cousins son who is about a year old and will do the toddler hat, Caron Simply Soft, and try an H hook. I’d rather have it be too big. He’s across the sea, so I can’t try it on him first!

I agree, I’d always rather it be a bit too big, and it’s hard when they live father away, guessing is the worst! hope you loves it!

I have a question. Someone has requested I make a beard beanie for their 10yr old boy. Would you suggest the child size or teen size beanie for the average 10yr old boy ?

GAH, I hate size questions cause every child/adult head is so so SO different and I never want to promise something and have people disappointed. I would choose to error on the side of too big, but 10… the teen could be way to big, or it might fit perfect! It’s also hard cause everyone crochet’s so differently (tight/loose/etc…)
