Baby Boy’s Smash Cake Session

TODAY is Baby Boy’s birthday!  CRAZY, huh?  I can’t believe it’s already been a year!  And such a fast year.  It seriously seems like it’s only been a few months! (thank you SO much Chelsea Peterson Photography for the AMAZING photoshoot! This is the BEST smash cake session EVER!)

This morning we had Baby Boy’s birthday party, which I’ll share next week!  It was super fun and a total success and thank you to the sweet friends who were able to make it!

For the cake smash I made a 6 inch version of my sprinkles cake, but instead of covering it completely I let it taper off towards to top to bring the focus to the #1 topper!

He went RIGHT for the topper!  What is it about kids and fondant?  I used a number 1 cookie cutter on fondant, painted it with vodka (clear vanilla works too) and covered it with sprinkles and let it dry overnight!

He wasn’t so sure about it after he took that first bite…  I love this face!  And check out these amazing eyes!  My boy has AMAZING eyes!

But he went back for more!!!  Precious precious little boy!  I showed up at my sisters house and had forgotten his jeans!  I grabbed three pairs before leaving the house and I couldn’t find a single one! So we borrowed a pair from my niece and rolled them up!  It worked out really cute actually!

He enjoyed the number 1 so much I actually ended up taking it away so we could get on with the MAIN event!  CAKE!  He was a great cake smash participant!  Hesitant at first so we got a ton of pictures of each stage!

Just grabbing and playing with the corner!  images of sweet fingers playing with the fondant…  And finally trying it for the first time!

These pictures are my favorite…  he’s gotten into the cake a bit more… playing with his fingers…

The adorable smashing it into his face (check out those finger all over his face!) seriously the perfect picture!  I love this one!

And back for more…  I love those chubby fingers, fat toes, double chins, everything about this is adorable.  PURE adorable!

I actually had to step in and get in the cake more he was going so slow!  luckily my sweet nieces were there with us so we just broke each of them off a piece while we continued with  pictures!

At one point he was done… he just wanted mom snuggles.  Good think I wore grubbies that day, I ended up getting pretty dirty myself!  He’s about to cry in this second picture, that’s his ‘unsure” face.

He actually didn’t love the cake as much as he enjoyed feeling the cake and frosting between his fingers!  I never would have done this, even as a child I hated getting dirty!

Could these toes have any more cake in them?

At this point he was DONE, I kept putting the cake on his lap and he just was DONE so he just pushed it RIGHT off…  Done, plate empty!

I kind of expected a bit more of a mess at the end!  Esp with buttercream, it’s SO greasy, but he actually stayed relatively clean-ish…  We put him straight into the bath and with that it was over!

The remains of the day…

My sweet baby is one and while I’m so excited he’s growing and changing and hitting so many milestones (he’s calling me ma or mama now!), but it went too fast.  It always does.  His birthday is over and I’m sitting here at my computer, the high from the day is over.  Everyone is in bed, I’ve cleaned up from the party and I’m in tears.  My baby is one.

Loved reading your emotional account. I could feel again that bittersweet pride and nostalgia as my little guys left babyhood for toddlerhood. Have to put the phone down to go hug them right now!

I love those pictures! We went the lazy route for my boy’s first birthday two years ago… Stripped him down to a diaper and gave him a slice at his birthday party. We got some amazing shots, but I wish I had thought to do a photo-shoot type thing!

omg! He is so sweet! Look at those cheeks!
Take lots of pictures they sadly go away when they are about 4! I still sneak in some pinches on my sons cheeks when he lets me 🙂

The sprinkles cake is such a great idea. Congrats!

oh don’t I know it! My older kids have all disobeyed my request that they stop growing too! I’d freeze time if I could, But each stage is so much fun I’d hate to miss out on those as well. and thank you so much! I love the sprinkles cake, and how it turned out, such a fun party to throw for him!

    Hi there,

Love these pictures! My son will be turning one, I would love to make a cake similar, how did you manage to get sprinkles on the sides only?

    Thx in advance!

I did a tutorial on the sprinkles on my first sprinkle cake… just hold some in your cupped hand, start at the bottom and hold against the fresh buttercream as you work your way up! I usually get about half way up with one handful, do the whole bottom and then go around doing the top half. for this one I lessened my handful as well as my pressure to give it an more full look on the bottom and less on the top half.

    Hello!

What fabulous smash cake photos! And what a truly precious baby boy! I happened upon your page as I was looking for smash cake recipes for my little guy who turns one on Feb. 24th. At the end of your post you mentioned how you were in tears…that is exactly how I feel. On one hand of course I’m so proud of all his milestones, and excited to watch him grow up. But I am so sad that this year went by so fast. Crazy Joe quickly time flies!

    Anyway…I love your photos!

    Take care,

    Jenn

Just realized that my email said “Crazy Joe quickly time flies”…I’m LOL…definitely meant to say “Crazy HOW quickly time flies”. I’m sure you figured it out, but I saw it again when I read your reply.

Anyway…definitely trying to hold on to every second with my little guy before he really starts to run the other direction. LOL.

        Have a great week!

        Jenn

Yes I did. I just used a needle and thread and strung up a bunch or rainbow pom poms in different sizes.

This one was a 6 inch cake, 4 inches tall, just one layer (I bake in 4 inch tall pans). I’m now doing 5 inch smash cakes so they are just a bit smaller so it doesn’t overwhelm smaller babies.

Love it! Thanks for this! I wanted a good idea for “smash cake pictures”, and I’m pretty sure we can recreate this (they won’t be nearly as professional-looking!). The banner of colored poms looks so perfect. I may do something similar, with the sprinkles on the cake and matching colors on the walls. Thanks again!

I strung colored pom poms up in different sizes on string. Then I hung them every few inches hanging down along the backdrop.

Hello! I’m a photographer in Australia and I’ve been trying to find a cake stand that fits a ribbon like the one you used here for my cake smashes but can’t seem to find one anywhere in Australia. Can you tell me where you purchased it? Thanks! Leanne (Leanne Handreck Photography, Gold Coast, Australia)
