Our Halloween costumes! 50’s style.

So here is my first of a few Costume posts. If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook your already up to date on my problem’s but in case your not… Between the remodel, the cake site, the cake, my sewing machine/pettiskirt order issues AND the lack of jobs/money I seriously considered trying to get away with no costumes this year. Seriously, I was totally deluded! A week ago Lego boy announces that he’s going to be a dragon. Any of you with Asperger/autisic kids know that once they DECIDE on something that’s IT. So now I’m really in for it. I waited to long and there is NO WAY to get a dragon costume made or even purchased. Still putting it off I was at Joann’s getting the elastic so I could FINALLY finish an order of pettiskirts I’ve been working on for months (above mentioned sewing machine issues) and I notice they have felt on a huge sale.

So I thought – Felt Poodleskirts are super easy to make and and boy’s 50’s costumes are easy, right? So I bought it… without talking to my kids for approval! Eeekk! I hope they are okay with it. The girls were good to go, big skirts? I knew I’d with them over. But white t-shirts and jeans? BORING, I knew I couldn’t with the boys over with that. SO I thought, what about letterman’s cardigans? Could be cute IF I can find 3 matching cardigans… BIG if. So I ran over to DI one morning after droping the kids off at school. Did you know that they get a HUGE line at the front door before they open. Really? Anyway, it took about 45 mins of searching but… I did it, three semi-matching cardigan’s for the boys! AND I found semi-matching cardigans for us gal’s too. So PJ’s underneath and I think we’ll be warm enough. So here we are, leaving for our Trunk or Treat Wednesday night.

Sorry about the bottom crop off. That’s what I get when I ask someone else to take a picture for me. I’ll try to get another one over the next 2 days so I can replace this mess. Oh and my hair? I was trying for Rizzo from Grease, the only short 50’s style I could think of. But with my super straight hair it just wasn’t happening. This the best I could do. Please don’t judge (NOT a good look for me). Scroll down to see my tutorials for our costumes!
Update, here is a picture from Saturday’s trick or treating, not much better, but at least it’s full bodied!

I love it! My little boy is going to be a 50’s greaser. His grandma made him a faux leather jacket. I didn’t even think about cardigans. Yours are way cute! Oh, I thought Rizzo when I first looked at this picture, you did good!

I wanted to do the 50’s greaser, but just didn’t have the time or money to put into making leather/faux leather jackets this year. Maybe if I’d started earlier! The sweaters turned out cute enough for me, but I think they could use a bow tie or nerd glasses!

I think it’s great. I am glad your kids went along with it…

Don’t know if you saw Derek’s kids in the Halloween parade today. I couldn’t make it to the school…ugg. Work.

I’m glad they went along with it too! Don’t worry about not making it. Other than the parents there setting up for the parties there were only like 10 of us there! It was a super short parade too, MAYBE 10 mins long. And I did see they boys. They looked great in their costumes! Good job!

Thanks! My oldest told me today she’d like to do the Wizard of Oz next year… FINALLY! Now if I start making the costumes now I might get done!
