I know I’m not shocking anyone here when I say I LOVE ICE CREAM! And everything that goes with ice cream – including toppings AND cones! SO when I was giving this waffle cone maker I was in HEAVEN! Today I’m finally sharing this easy to make homemade waffle cone or bowl recipe.
I love this recipe cause it’s 1. easy, 2. fast, and 3. tastes great! It has the perfect crunch and sweetness level. Not overly sweet though, and it’s super easy to shape! You can make larger or smaller cones just by changing the amount of batter you put into the waffle maker, and if you don’t want a cone just toss the warm waffle into a bowl (or muffin tin for small ones).
homemade waffle cones and bowls

So what do you think? Easy, smells great, tastes even better and the perfect way to eat ice cream! I love using the smaller scoop and muffin tin to make itty bitty bowls. That way I don’t feel like I’m giving my kiddo’s too much sweets, and we can enjoy ice cream more often!

If I do not have a waffle cone maker but have a waffle iron can I use that? What is the difference?
many thanks
Ashlee
they are completely different, waffle cones are almost completely flat with just a very light waffle cone texture. while waffle irons are very deep
Vanita
Can you use less batter in a regular waffle iron
Ashlee Marie
you need a waffle cone maker because it’s flat, a normal waffle iron has all those ridges that are way too deep for this super thin batter, so it wouldn’t work.
Nick
How do you get them to stick together
Ashlee Marie
roll right away and let them cool and they’ll look in shape.

I just made this recipe in my Belgium waffle maker. My wife and I loved them at first bite. We are going to make small Belgium waffles with this recipe to put at the bottom of the bowl of ice cream

I just made these using a traditional waffle iron (for Belgium waffles). I just put a flat piece of tin foil on each side of the iron so that the ridges weren’t deep. I still got some of the pattern, but it spread them nice and thin. No problem! Yummy!
Ashlee Marie
that’s smart thinking

Just found your blog and love this recipe!! I’m hoping to make a ton of these (like 100+) for a family reunion this summer. How long do these keep for? I’m hoping to make them in advance. I haven’t been able to test how long they last at my house because we always eat them!
Ashlee
like any fresh baked good they don’t last super long. The best thing would be to make and freeze them until you want to use them
T
What about the batter? Will it keep in the fridge for very long?
Ashlee Marie
It will def last for a few hours, I wouldn’t like make it way ahead of time, but it should remix easily enough if it separates.

Ashlee,
I will try your recipe. I will be making bowls and will be using them in four days. Should I still freeze them to keep them fresh? I am thinking that they might get soggy in the freezer. To keep the bowls fresh and crispy, I need some advice.
Thanks so very much,
Deborah
Ashlee Marie
I’d just keep them in a bag on the counter, I won’t freeze or refrigerate them.

Can I keep the batter in the fridge and make cones as needed or does the batter need to be used right away?
Ashlee Marie
i’ve never tried to keep the batter longer than just making some cones right away. it would probably be okay for a day, but not too much longer.

Ashlee Marie

Karen
These are the first waffle cones I have made. They will not be the last. They were so crispy and the taste was outstanding. Still have to practice rolling them into cones but my little bowls turned out great!
Thx for this recipe.
Ashlee Marie
It only takes a few times to get used to rolling the cones, just a few more practice rounds and you’ll be an expert!

Please help! I am no sure what temp to cook them on my iron for along with how long. What setting and time do you use.
Ashlee Marie
I used the medium heat setting and cook for 40-45 seconds
Becky
Can I ask what brand/model ice cream cone maker you have? The ones I’ve seen available don’t seem to have the best ratings, but your cones look great!
Ashlee Marie
mine is chefchoice https://amzn.to/2K3TbwY

Do you have a recipe to make strawberry flavored waffle cones?
Ashlee Marie
ohhh that sounds amazing. I’d use freeze dried strawberries and grind them up into a powder
Julie
Your waffle cone recipe is the best of many I have tried. It gives me the most even browning and consistent results. Thanks for such an awesome recipe. Also your photography is so attractive!
Ashlee Marie
awww thank you so much and you are so very welcome!

I just started my own ice cream shop and wanted to make my own waffle cones / bowls. When I made them, they looked and tasted great, but I couldn’t keep them from getting soft and wimpy. Any advise?
Ashlee Marie
maybe cook them a little longer? Ive never had mine get soft!

I made this this morning to go with some homemade rocky rd ice cream. I didn’t have a waffle cone maker but I do have a panini maker. I made the first few as written but soon realized that the batter was too thick for my maker so I thinned it down a bit using whole milk. I made a cone with some card stock to role it on when it was done. These are fantastic! I will keep this recipe forever. Also, I turned the bater sideways halfway through cooking to make a waffle like appearance. Thank you for a wonderful recipe and my first time making them.
Ashlee Marie
awesome, so glad it worked out in the panini maker
Erika
This is so fun! I don’t really need to get another kitchen tool, but since I live in a hot climate this might just make its way to my home. Thanks for sharing your tips!
Ashlee Marie
and it doesn’t take up too much room! you can use a cookie sheet and bake it instead of using the waffle iron

Making this for one of my plated desserts for my final in my Pastry Arts class. All of the samples I’ve made for testing have been a huge hit so far!
Ashlee Marie
so glad! hope the final went well!
Amy
This recipe was very easy. I was only able to make 6 cones. I would use this recipe again, but I will add a little more sugar.
Ashlee Marie
maybe put a little less batter into the waffle cone, I usually get 8 cones. But glad you liked it!
