The Good Dinosaur Glow in the Dark Cake Tutorial

It’s no secret I love movies, especially Disney Movies.  There is just something magical about them, I still remember the first time I saw Beauty and the Beast and how captivating it was, and the talent that goes into that kind of art, the time, the hard work, I just love it all.  SO I’m super excited to be working with Fandango Family creating tutorials for upcoming releases! Eeeek I’m seriously SO excited!  SO first up! The Good Dinosaur…  GLOW IN THE DARK!

I started brainstorming by looking at the Disney Press page, at the images they had, the clips, the trailers, etc… and I fell in LOVE with this poster. I have always loved fireflies anyway, and with the sweet silhouettes, shading and the BRIGHT colors.  I immediately thought – this needs to somehow glow!  I wanted to create a cake that had two looks, one lit and one dark, glow in the dark.

So time to experiment… I seriously love experimenting usually, but this one was so frustrating.  I thought it would be easy, I KNEW that tonic water glowed in the dark so I figured I was halfway there… UNTIL I TRIED IT!  GAH, I seriously tried everything, adding colors, adding white coloring, adding, adding, adding… and nothing worked.  I seriously was thinking I would have to give up on the glow in the dark idea. THEN I took my black light, turned off the lights and just went searching through my kitchen for anything that glowed!

YAY I found something that glowed, and glowed BRIGHT! So it worked and finally all came together, YAY! I love this cake, seriously love it.  I can’t wait to try more of the disco dust (NOT all of the colors glow, the pink, the whites and other light colors glowed great, but the dark colors and silvers don’t – I took a mini black light with me to the store to test them out before buying).

Here is a close up of Spot on top of Arlo’s back.  I have to say my kids are SO excited that the dinosaur’s name is Arlo, it’s a family name for us.  Middle names, Great Grandpa’s names, my Husband’s middle name, cousin’s, grandchildren and more.  The year Grandpa Arlo died there were like five Arlo’s born.  It is considered a pretty WEIRD name, but NOW, being a Disney Character, it is now very cool!  Do you have any weird family names you have to pass on?

I love how his hair glows in the dark, and his sweet profile in the light.  Bit of advice, I finished adding the “paint” and the glitter then turned on the light and it was more faded than I wanted so that’s when I added more dots, more splatters and more glitter. It was whiter than I wanted when I turned the light back on but by doing the last details while it was under the black light it helped make sure it had enough of the glow I was going for!

THE GOOD DINOSAUR

Every time Pixar and Disney comes out with a new movie I always think… ummmm this can’t be as good as the last… and then it always is! I have just learned to look forward to the next movie with excitement! I seriously can’t wait to see it!  Don’t forget to head over to Fandango to see trailers and clips and don’t forget to get your tickets!  This is going to be our Black Friday family movie, do you have any fun family movie-watching traditions?

I seriously am so excited by how fun this glow in the dark (technically under black light) technique is.  I love how simple this cake was to make, and lets face it, I just love making a mess so creating the splatters, large and small, was fun!  The kids loved it too.  What other movies are you looking forward to? AKA what other movies coming out do you want to see treats for?

Unfortunately, I used rainbow disco dust and it did not glow in a room full of black lights. So disappointing!

that’s so weird! it totally worked for me, was it the CK products brand? When I was looking I took a little handheld black light with me and tested in the store before I bought.

So clever to use stuff you already have, I had no idea some discos glow! Like any of us need more cake ‘toys’ but there are tons of new colors out that glow in the dark/black light! Rolkum has a line of powdered colors, Lumos, that glow (Rolkum has the best gold too that’s actually food safe, haven’t tried their silver), Rainbow Dust, Paint It, I’m sure there are others these are just the ones I’ve recently discovered. Love your work, thanks for sharing!

I haven’t tried rolkum, the gold has been on my list for awhile. I’ll order some and play with it!

Which disco dust did you use? the brand and color? I’ve been asked to do a cake for a “glow” party and I’m trying to find things that glow in the dark. Sine I have to order online, I can’t try them out with a black light before buying. Not to mention, I LOVE your Gruff cake!! That’s the only Tinker Bell movie my 4yr old daughter likes, actually, she loves it. Never thought to do a Gruff cake!
