This post is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group® and Universal Pictures, but all my opinions are my own. #pmedia #BoxtrollsFamilyNite https://my-disclosur.es/OBsstV
We have a LOT of kids, and they all have different interests, so often times we use the “divide and conquer” approach to family time (I take half the kids to an activity and my Husband takes the other kids to another activity). Â ANYWAY… one of the few things we can ALL agree on is Family Movie Night! Â We ESPECIALLY love it when a new release comes out so it’s one we haven’t seen before. Â It’s always more fun when we don’t know what’s coming next! Â I love bringing a new release home and try to make those movie nights more special.
So when I saw that The Boxtrolls just came out in blu-ray and DVD at Walmart last month I grabbed it right away (it was actually hard to find, it’s selling out fast, so get it while supplies last)! Â The movie was ADORABLE and had an amazing message that was perfect for my kiddo’s.
Computer boy has been asking why the bad guy would keep eating cheese even though he was allergic and it’s been a great lesson about trying too hard to fit in.  The Aspergers tends to make my kids more gullible and since they don’t always understand society’s rules they sometimes try to fit in the wrong way… So this has lead to a few great talks about not changing who you are simply to fit in.
And to make a special move night more fun I decided to add a fun popcorn bar to the mix! In the movie The Boxtrolls eat bugs while the White Hat’s eat cheese. Â SOOOO Â I decided we needed bugs and cheese in our popcorn bar! I found the most adorable bug candy sprinkles and sugar ladybugs online and they were perfect! Â The most popular popcorn I make is candy popcorn, it’s seriously SO easy and SOOOOO addictive! Â It’s the perfect base for the candy bugs!
Start out with plain popcorn, I bought the Pop Secret 10ct Home-Style Popcorn so it’s not super buttery or greasy. Â It’s perfect!
Candy popcorn
Instructions
- Spread the popped popcorn out in a baking sheet
- melt the candy in the microwave
- pour the candy over the popcorn and stir it together
- spread it out again and let it cool (this is the time to add any candy or sprinkles to the popcorn)
- break the popcorn into pieces and serve!

Princess was pretty grossed out by Egg’s (the boy) eating bugs in the movie so the candy bugs put her at ease.  It made it less gross and more funny, she loved the candy bugs (what am I saying, they are pure sugar of COURSE she loved them).
I left the homestyle popcorn plain for the Cheese popcorn.  For this side of the bar I got out salt, cheddar powder and freshly grated parmesean!  Cheese cheese and more cheese!  And for the non cheese lovers (Is that even a thing???) I also got out my vanilla sugar for a sweet touch.
And just for fun (nothing to do with the movie) I added my candied bacon (Mmmmmm) to some Caramel popcorn. Â I just HAPPEN to have both of those (yeah I make both pretty much all the time – SERIOUSLY I love candied bacon SOOOOO much).
Now popcorn bar’s can get messy, really messy but we can’t watch a movie in the kitchen… so we needed to find a way for everyone to eat their own popcorn without using every bowl in the house. Â But I wanted them to also match the box party we were having. Â Super simple, we cut the bags in half, then folded down the edge twice! Â PERFECT little bowls for each person!
To complete our fun party we actually stacked a bunch of our moving boxes in place of a table (yes they are all still full, unpacking is taking a back seat to the kitchen remodel and other home projects).  ANYWAY the boxes were perfect for out table, and we backed it with a large, open box and my FAVORITE part… the big globe bulb light strand!  In the movie the sweet boxtrolls underground cavern is full of these round lightbulbs and they were the perfect touch!
The kids LOVED the movie. Â Baby Boy and Princess grabbed this empty box and have enjoyed playing Boxtrolls all weekend. Â The movie was adorable, the message was great and it will def be a family movie night repeat!
