Crochet beard beanie

A simple easy crochet beard pattern that is a fun gag gift or a great way to keep your face warm in the winter.

Crochet beard hat

I grew up with my parents throwing a white elephant party every year and I couldn’t wait to grow up and have my own. So the first one I got invited to I couldn’t wait to come up with something fun to take.

I was in the middle of a crochet kick at the time and I had seen a crochet beard and decided to try my hand and writing a pattern and creating one. It took a few times and lots of frogging but I finally came up with one I loved

I used my basic striped beanie pattern for the hat (I have created sizes infant to adult). I use the ribbing to attach the beard into the inside of the hat.

Crochet beard beanie without beard

You could also just crochet some chains on each side and wrap the chains around your ears instead – but I hate things behind my ears (I think it’s because I hated glasses so much) so I prefer to attach the beard to the hat.

Since I created this basic beard I’ve not created 2 more beards – Bobble beards sizes infant to adult and the double loop beard also infant to adult sizes. If you want to get the pdfs for all three beards as well as both the beanie and the santa beanies click below.

Row 10- Ch 1, turn, sc in next 10 st, hdc in next st, ch 10, skip 10 st, hdc in next st, sc in next 10 st 32
Row 11- Ch 1, turn, sc in next 9 st, 3 dc in next st, 2dblcrochet cluster 10 times in ch space, 3 dc in next st, sc in next 9 st.
finish off

Sew row ends of beard to the inside edge of beanie making sure it is spaced evenly between the two sides. I sewed mine about 1/2 inch up, I like the way it pulls and looks better than attaching RIGHT to the edge.

I put the hat inside out, then wrapped the beard where I wanted it and pinned the beard. Then took it off and sewed it into place. I hope that helps and I’m SO sorry it’s taken me so long to get back to you! What a fun, but crazy time of year!

The stitch you are using I believe is called a 2dblcrochet cluster, using 2 double crochets to make a cluster rather than 3 or 4.

I’ve tried twice to make the hat from your pattern, and I’ve checked and double checked the stitch count on both occasions, but the top of the hat always seems to come out flat. The first time, I was using very large, soft yarn… I thought that was the issue. The second time, I used Vanna’s Choice and it is still flat. There is a good downturn at about row 10, but up until that point, it’s mostly flat. Is this because of the yarn, or might I be doing something else wrong?

    Thanks.

that’s totally right, around row ten the sides start. For some people their gauge is larger than mine and you can start the downturn earlier, but as it’s written it’s pretty much flat until row 10. There are lots of different ways to crochet beanies and this is the one I picked for this hat, but you can totally make another version if you have a favorite. for my husband this hat is perfect for me I get rid of row 9 and start the sides earlier, it’s all about preference! Good luck an I hope you like the rest! Your not doing anything wrong.

Very Clever!! If anyone is a SF Giants’ fan, then this would be the perfect thing to wear at home games in The City! It’s the Brian Wilson FEAR THE BEARD beanie! May have to try this for my next game, even tho Brian is on the DL! Thanks for the idea!!!

What was the gauge that you ended up with? I am having problems with the hat, and I am wondering if it is because my stitches are too stretched out/large. Thanks!

CRAP, gauge???? I’m terrible at gauge, the first hat I made was PERFECT, the second was HUGE, beanie are nice cause you can play it by ear, when it get’s wide enough, start the sides, you don’t have to make it like mine, you could do a hdc instead of a dc too, that could help. Also if you have a beanie pattern you already love you can use it as a good base for this!

Hello, I tried to make the beard beanie and mine turned out WAY to big… I don’t know what I did wrong because I counted every stitch on every round. Any words of advice?

my second one was WAY too big too, I ended up taking out an increase row, with beanies you just play it by ear, increase until it looks right, then down the sides until it fits right…. I follow basic beanie rules but I probably make it different every time, simple things like yarn, weather, hooks, and how tight or loose I’m crocheting can really change a hat!

I absolutely love this idea and plan to try it. My family and I snow mobile a lot during the winter and these will be great to cover my small children’s faces. I wonder though, have you thought about the addition of a red bulbuls nose and maybe a more full beard to cover more of your face? I can’t wait to sit down and make a few of these for my winter loving family 🙂

Being so close to Christmas and a cold winter coming, I know a few people who wold really appreciate a gift from the heart. Thank you for sharing such a nice little work of art.

Love the look of this pattern. I’ve seen pictures of similar bearded beanies and thought about trying to come up with my own pattern (I probably will some time) but I’m definitely going to make one of these for my husband. Thank you for making an easy to follow pattern.
