Creating a Velvet Fondant effect

I have been obsessed with chocolate cakes lately!  I mean I love a gorgeous white wedding cake, but for our last wedding photoshoot I created the most gorgeous chocolate wedding cake ever.  I can’t wait to share the pictures for it.  A few weeks later I decided to use the same technique on this Thanksgiving centerpiece.

creating a velvet look on a fondant cake

It’s easy to create and the effect is lush, rich and gorgeous.  I tried a few different effects to create this one.

Supplies
Satin Ice dark Chocolate fondant
white fondant
cocoa powder
steamer
blush brush (but one I only use for food)

Its easy to get this soft velvety look on your fondant

The dark chocolate fondant is really dark, so I added some of the white with it to lighten it a bit.  When your happy with the color cover your cake with it.

Steam the cake to get it tacky, if you don’t have a steamer you can paint it with water, but not too much, you just want it a little wet/tacky, barely damp.

Use the blush brush to dab cocoa powder all over the cake.  Brush it around, brushing the excess off.  You can have as much or as little as you want on the cake to get the desired effect!  I layered some regular and some dark cocoa on to get some depth to the cake.

you can use dark or regular cocoa on chocolate fondant or a powdered sugar cornstarch mixture on a white cake

I’m planning on trying it out with a white cake and powdered sugar/cornstarch.  Next I think I’m going to try making colored powdered sugar and see if I love it on colored cakes as well as the chocolate cake.  What do you think? Maybe a red velvet fondant cake? Ohhhh that could be luscious!  What color would you try first?  Of course the darker the color the hardest it will be achieve.

This velvety cake looks amazing and is so easy to create

So it’s been awhile since I’ve done a cake tutorial, but I have plans to do a lot more in 2015!  Any techniques you’ve seen lately that you’d like me to teach?  Or do you want a full tutorial on any of the cakes I’ve already done? I’d love to hear what you guys are looking for!

Rock Troll Oreo Cookie pops – Frozen Party Food

Yet another Oreo Truffle Pop!  I love these things.  You can also use cake pops for these Rock Troll pops if you want, either one works GREAT!  You create grey “rocks” then add green luster dust for a “moss” look.  What do you think? My husband didn’t get it, or think they were great, but I LOVED how they turned out!

Homemade Croissants

Here is my last recipe, Croissants, I made this year for our Blogger Thanksgiving! The FULL roundup with links to everyone will be posted tomorrow!

I have been making homemade croissants for years. I remember the first time I made then, about 7 years ago, I was so worried that they simply wouldn’t work. I mean they seem SO complicated! But in truth they are really SO easy, but a bit messy. There is simply a lot of waiting! Do a few steps, wait, do a few steps wait…. etc… But when you break one open they are SO worth it!

homemade croissants are actually super easy to make, just a little time consuming, but totally worth it.

Coconut Macaroons

The first time my mom came home from Europe she brought a new favorite treat, a Bounty Bar.  She loved it because it was like Mounds bars, but in milk chocolate instead of dark (I prefer the dark chocolate).  But since she can’t rush off to Europe every time she craves one I set out to make a good substitute!

we love coconut at our house, and you can't really go wrong with these macaroons, easy to make and they taste amazing
