Now for the CAKE! Always my favorite from any party! I created one themed food for each of the main characters, Black and white Puppy Chow for Carlos, Broken edible Magic Mirror shards for Evie and Victory Pizza for Jay. For MAL I decided to use the “long live evil” Graffiti tag she creates on her locker and all over the isle of lost. It was perfect to put onto a cake.
I debated creating the image in layers of fondant for a more crisp look, but I decided to stick with the more rough, and more accurate, graffiti look. To create this I needed to start by making stencils, one for each color, purple, green and black. Cutting stencils is easy and fun, I’ve done it before for my stenciled bedroom wall (wow that was 4 years ago now, how pregnant was I!!!)
So this is what you need for making your own stencils:
an Image: I used this image as my template for my stencil.
glass cutting board (so you can cut on it an see the template through it)
craft plastic
craft cutter/wood burner
Tape the image to the underside of the glass cutting board. Place the plastic on the top side of the glass stencil and mark around the plastic sheet with tape so each sheet you cut will be in the same location every time. Tape it down so it doesn’t move as you work. The wood burner will cut RIGHT through the plastic. Move slowly, but not too slow, and smoothly, you’ll be so happy with it. Save every piece just in case, you never know what you might need.
Using the stencils on the cake is easy, you need to use thin pins to hold the stencils in place. It’s still not perfect, try to think about pin placement, if I don’t want pin marks to show I’ll have someone hold the stencil for me, still looking for the perfect, non human, stencil holder… Anyway, for this cake you need:
double barrel 8 inch cake (two 8 inch cakes stacked with a cake circle and dowel structure inside)
yellow fondant
electric green Gel dye (to marbleize with the yellow fondant)
stencils
airbrush gun
airbrush amerimist colors – electric green, purple, black
I covered the cake in a marbled yellow and electric green fondant. If I was going to do it again I think I’d stick with white cause the purple paint over the yellow looks darker than I wanted. BUT it did save me a step.
Inside the cake is pistachio (with some electric green dye to boost the color), cherry (with some blue dye to boost the purple shad) and my classic chocolate! BUT you can also use white cakes that you dye as well. I’m still not happy with the pistachio but the cherry was AMAZING! SOMEDAY I’ll have a cookbook for you guys with all my cake and frosting recipes. So what do you think? I’d love to see some cakes you guys make with these techniques!
