Creating a Velvet Fondant effect

I have been obsessed with chocolate cakes lately!  I mean I love a gorgeous white wedding cake, but for our last wedding photoshoot I created the most gorgeous chocolate wedding cake ever.  I can’t wait to share the pictures for it.  A few weeks later I decided to use the same technique on this Thanksgiving centerpiece.

creating a velvet look on a fondant cake

It’s easy to create and the effect is lush, rich and gorgeous.  I tried a few different effects to create this one.

Supplies
Satin Ice dark Chocolate fondant
white fondant
cocoa powder
steamer
blush brush (but one I only use for food)

Its easy to get this soft velvety look on your fondant

The dark chocolate fondant is really dark, so I added some of the white with it to lighten it a bit.  When your happy with the color cover your cake with it.

Steam the cake to get it tacky, if you don’t have a steamer you can paint it with water, but not too much, you just want it a little wet/tacky, barely damp.

Use the blush brush to dab cocoa powder all over the cake.  Brush it around, brushing the excess off.  You can have as much or as little as you want on the cake to get the desired effect!  I layered some regular and some dark cocoa on to get some depth to the cake.

you can use dark or regular cocoa on chocolate fondant or a powdered sugar cornstarch mixture on a white cake

I’m planning on trying it out with a white cake and powdered sugar/cornstarch.  Next I think I’m going to try making colored powdered sugar and see if I love it on colored cakes as well as the chocolate cake.  What do you think? Maybe a red velvet fondant cake? Ohhhh that could be luscious!  What color would you try first?  Of course the darker the color the hardest it will be achieve.

This velvety cake looks amazing and is so easy to create

So it’s been awhile since I’ve done a cake tutorial, but I have plans to do a lot more in 2015!  Any techniques you’ve seen lately that you’d like me to teach?  Or do you want a full tutorial on any of the cakes I’ve already done? I’d love to hear what you guys are looking for!

Sleeping Beauty Princess Cake Tutorial

I know my princess Cakes (Elsa, Anna, Merida, Rapunzel and Tiana) have been a popular series so I was excited to add Aurora to the mix!  You can use this tutorial to make a pink or blue simple dress, or add the extra steps to make this multi colored, splattered dress (Yes I know she doesn’t ever wear, or even SEE this splattered version in the movie, but it was something different and eye catching to create).

Kermit and Constantine Cake #MuppetsMostWanted

This is a sponsored posts, all opinions are 100% my own

I love the Muppets, I always have, I own EVERY movie they have made and my kids love watching them too!  The latest movie, Muppets Most Wanted is no exception, it’s HILARIOUS!  Mrs. Piggys is, of course, a favorite.  I have always had a thing for pigs, and she’s just great, a strong woman who goes after what she wants, and she wants it all.  Gotta love her!
